Superfluidity in three-species mixtures of Fermi gases across Feshbach resonances

Abstract

In this Rapid Communication a generalization of the BEC-BCS crossover theory to a multicomponent superfluid is presented by studying a three-species mixture of Fermi gas across two Feshbach resonances. At the BEC side of resonances, two kinds of molecules are stable which gives rise to a two-component Bose condensate. This two-component superfluid state can be experimentally identified from the radio-frequency spectroscopy, density profile, and short noise measurements. As approaching the BCS side of resonances, the superfluidity will break down at some point and yield a first-order quantum phase transition to normal state, due to the mismatch of three Fermi surfaces. Phase separation instability will occur around the critical regime.

Superfluid stability in the BEC-BCS crossover

C.-H. Pao, Shin-Tza Wu, Sungkit Yip

We consider a dilute atomic gas of two species of fermions with unequal concentrations under a Feshbach resonance. We find that the system can have distinct properties due to the unbound fermions. The uniform state is stable only when either (a) beyond a critical coupling strength, where it is a gapless superfluid, or (b) when the coupling strength is sufficiently weak, where it is a normal Fermi gas mixture. Phase transition(s) must therefore occur when the resonance is crossed, in contrast to the equal population case where a smooth crossover takes place.

Quantum Droplets in a Mixture of Bose–Fermi Superfluids

Jingbo B. Wang, Jian-Song Pan, Xiaoling Cui +1 more

We study the formation of quantum droplets in the mixture of a single-component Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), and a two-species Fermi superfluid across a wide Feshbach resonance. With repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions, we show that quantum droplets can be stabilized by attractive fermion-fermion interactions on the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) side of the resonance, and can also exist in the deep BEC regime under weak boson-fermion interactions. We map out the phase diagram for stable droplets with respect to the boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions, and discuss the role of different types of quantum fluctuations in the relevant regions of the BCS-BEC crossover. Our work reveals the impact of fermion pairing on the formation of quantum droplets in Bose–Fermi mixtures, and provides a useful guide for future experiments.

Superradiant phase transition of Fermi gases in a cavity across a Feshbach resonance

Yu Chen, Hui Zhai, Zhenhua Yu

We consider the superradiant phase transition of a two-component Fermi gas in a cavity across a Feshbach resonance. It is known that quantum statistics plays a crucial role for the superradiant phase transition in atomic gases; in contrast to bosons, in a Fermi gas this transition exhibits strong density dependence. We show that across a Feshbach resonance, while the two-component Fermi gas passes through the BEC-BCS crossover, the superradiant phase transition undergoes a corresponding crossover from a fermionic behavior on the weakly interacting BCS side, to a bosonic behavior on the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) side. This intricate statistics crossover makes the superradiance maximally enhanced either in the unitary regime for low densities, in the BCS regime for moderate densities close to Fermi surface nesting, or in the BEC regime for high densities.

Phase diagram of asymmetric Fermi gas across Feshbach resonance

C-H Pao, S-K Yip

We study the phase diagram of the dilute two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature as a function of the polarization and coupling strength. We map out the detailed phase separations between superfluid and normal states near the Feshbach resonance. We show that there are three different coexistence of superfluid and normal phases corresponding to phase separated states between: (I) the partially polarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases, (II) the unpolarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases and (III) the unpolarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal phases from strong-coupling BEC side to weak-coupling BCS side. For pairing between two species, we found this phase separation regime gets wider and moves toward the BEC side for the majority species are heavier but shifts to BCS side and becomes narrow if they are lighter.

Collective modes and stability of Bose-Fermi mixtures with a BCS-BEC crossover

Hiroyuki Shibata, Nobuhiko Yokoshi, Susumu Kurihara

We investigate an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture with a Feshbach resonance between two hyperfine states of fermions. Using a functional integral method, we calculate collective modes associated with fermion pairs and bosons in the superfluid phase. We derive a stability condition of the mixtures that is valid in the entire region of the BCS-BEC crossover. This stability condition, which smoothly connects the well-known results obtained in both the BCS and Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) limits, shows that sufficiently strong fermion-boson (FB) interactions destabilize the mixtures. In order to investigate the consequence of this instability, we study the ground-state energy of both the uniformly mixed and the phase-separated states. We find that FB repulsion induces a phase separation, whereas FB attraction should cause a collapse of the mixture. The possibilities for the experimental observation of such instabilities are also discussed.

Pairing imbalance in the BCS-BEC crossover of an inhomogeneous three-component Fermi gas in two dimensions

Jia-jia Du, J.-Q. Liang, J.-Q. Liang

We in this paper investigate the phase diagram associated with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer--Bose-Einstein-condensate (BCS-BEC) crossover of a three-component ultracold superfluid Fermi gas of different chemical potentials and equal masses in two dimensions. The gap-order parameter and number densities are found analytically by using the functional-path-integral method. The balance of pairing will be broken in the free space due to the unequal chemical potentials. We obtain the same particle-number density and condensed fraction in the BCS-superfluid phase as those in a recent paper [Phys. Rev. A 83, 033630 (2011)] while the Sarma phase of the coexistence of normal and superfluid Fermi gases is characteristic of an inhomogeneous system. The minimum ratio of the BCS-superfluid phase becomes 1/3 in the BCS limit corresponding to the zero ratio in the two-component system in which the critical point of phase separation is ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{B}/{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F}=2$, but it becomes 3 in the three-component case.
