Abstract

We have observed phase separation between the superfluid and the normal component in a strongly interacting Fermi gas with imbalanced spin populations. The in situ distribution of the density difference between two trapped spin components is obtained using phase-contrast imaging and 3D image reconstruction. A shell structure is clearly identified where the superfluid region of equal densities is surrounded by a normal gas of unequal densities. The phase transition induces a dramatic change in the density profiles as excess fermions are expelled from the superfluid.

Superfluid shells for trapped fermions with mass and population imbalance

Guin-Dar Lin, Wei Yi, L.-M. Duan

We map out the phase diagram of strongly interacting fermions in a potential trap with mass and population imbalance between the two components. As a unique feature distinctively different from the equal-mass case, we show that the superfluid here forms a shell structure which is not simply connected in space. Different types of normal states occupy the trap regions inside and outside this superfluid shell. We calculate the atomic density profiles, which provide an experimental signature for the superfluid shell structure.

Phase Separation and Pair Condensation in a Spin-Imbalanced 2D Fermi Gas

Debayan Mitra, Peter T. Brown, Peter Schauß +2 more

We study a two-component quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas with imbalanced spin populations. We probe the gas at different interaction strengths and polarizations by measuring the density of each spin component in the trap and the pair momentum distribution after time of flight. For a wide range of experimental parameters, we observe in-trap phase separation characterized by the appearance of a spin-balanced core surrounded by a polarized gas. Our momentum space measurements indicate pair condensation in the imbalanced gas even for large polarizations where phase separation vanishes, pointing to the presence of a polarized pair condensate. Our observation of zero momentum pair condensates in 2D spin-imbalanced gases opens the way to explorations of more exotic superfluid phases that occupy a large part of the phase diagram in lower dimensions.

Phase Diagram of a Strongly Interacting Polarized Fermi Gas in One Dimension

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu, P. D. Drummond

Based on the integrable Gaudin model and local density approximation, we discuss the ground state of a one-dimensional trapped Fermi gas with imbalanced spin population, for an arbitrary attractive interaction. A phase separation state, with a polarized superfluid core immersed in an unpolarized superfluid shell, emerges below a critical spin polarization. Above it, coexistence of polarized superfluid matter and a fully polarized normal gas is favored. These two exotic states could be realized experimentally in highly elongated atomic traps, and diagnosed by measuring the lowest density compressional mode. We identify the polarized superfluid as having an Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov structure, and predict the resulting mode frequency as a function of the spin polarization.

Density Profile of a Trapped Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas with Unbalanced Spin Populations

Frédéric Chevy

We present a theoretical study of the density profile of a trapped strongly interacting Fermi gas with unbalanced spin populations. Making the assumption of the existence of a first order phase transition between an unpolarized superfluid phase and a fully polarized normal phase, we show good agreement with a recent experiment presented by Partridge et al.

Pairing and Phase Separation in a Polarized Fermi Gas

Guthrie B. Partridge, Wenhui Li, Ramsey I. Kamar +2 more

We report the observation of pairing in a gas of atomic fermions with unequal numbers of two components. Beyond a critical polarization, the gas separates into a phase that is consistent with a superfluid paired core surrounded by a shell of normal unpaired fermions. The critical polarization diminishes with decreasing attractive interaction. For near-zero polarization, we measured the parameter beta = -0.54 +/- 0.05, describing the universal energy of a strongly interacting paired Fermi gas, and found good agreement with recent theory. These results are relevant to predictions of exotic new phases of quark matter and of strongly magnetized superconductors.

Phase diagram of a cold polarized Fermi gas in two dimensions

Lianyi He, Pengfei Zhuang

The superfluid phase diagrams of a two-dimensional cold polarized Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover are systematically and analytically investigated. In the BCS-Leggett mean-field theory, the transition from unpolarized superfluid phase to normal phase is always of first order. For a homogeneous system, the two critical Zeeman fields and the critical population imbalance are analytically determined in the whole coupling parameter region, and the superfluid-normal mixed phase is shown to be the ground state between the two critical fields. The density profile in the presence of a harmonic trap calculated in the local-density approximation exhibits a shell structure, a superfluid core at the center, and a normal shell outside. For weak interaction, the normal shell contains a partially polarized cloud with constant density difference surrounded by a fully polarized state. For strong interaction, the normal shell is in a fully polarized state with a density profile depending only on the global population imbalance. The difermion bound states can survive in the whole highly imbalanced normal phase.
