Equilibrium dynamics of spin-glass systems

Abstract

We present a critical analysis of the Sompolinsky theory of equilibrium dynamics. By using the spherical $2+p$ spin-glass model we test the asymptotic static limit of the Sompolinsky solution showing that it fails to yield a thermodynamically stable solution. We then present an alternative formulation, based on the Crisanti, H\"orner, and Sommers [Z. Phys. B: Condens. Matter 92, 257 (1993)] dynamical solution of the spherical $p$-spin spin-glass model, reproducing a stable static limit that coincides, in the case of a one step replica symmetry breaking ansatz, with the solution at the dynamic free energy threshold at which the relaxing system gets stuck off equilibrium. We formally extend our analysis to any number of replica symmetry breakings $R$. In the limit $R\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, both formulations lead to the Parisi antiparabolic differential equation. This is the special case, though, where no dynamic blocking threshold occurs. The formulation does not contain the additional order parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ of the Sompolinsky theory.

Analytical solution of the off-equilibrium dynamics of a long-range spin-glass model

Leticia F. Cugliandolo, Jorge Kurchan B

We study the nonequilibrium relaxation of the spherical spin-glass model with p-spin interactions in the N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} limit. We analytically solve the asymptotics of the magnetization and the correlation and response functions for long but finite times. Even in the thermodynamic limit the system exhibits ``weak'' (as well as ``true'') ergodicity breaking and aging effects. We determine a functional Parisi-like order parameter ${\mathit{P}}_{\mathit{d}}$(q) which plays a similar role for the dynamics to that played by the usual function for the statics.

Replica symmetry breaking in spin glasses in the replica-free Keldysh formalism

Johannes Lang, Subir Sachdev A, Sebastian Diehl

We show that the algebra of Parisi ultrametric matrices is recovered by the real-time, replica-free, Dyson-Keldysh equations of infinite-range quantum spin glasses in the late time glassy limit. This connects to earlier results on classical and quantum systems showing how ultrametricity emerges from the persistent slow aging dynamics of the glass phase. The stationary spin glass state thereby spontaneously breaks thermal symmetry, or the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation of a state in global thermal equilibrium. We describe the Keldysh path integral of the infinite-range Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields, and in the context of the Landau expansion of the action functional, show how the long-time limit connects to the full replica symmetry breaking obtained in the equilibrium formalism. We also illustrate our formalism by applying it to the spherical quantum p p -spin model, which only exhibits one-step replica symmetry breaking.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory and the Aging Dynamics

A. Crisanti, Silvio Franz, Jorge Kurchan B +1 more

The study of the equilibrium and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of spin glasses is crucial to understand some of the characterizing properties of disordered systems, including slow relaxation times and aging. The current chapter focuses on recent developments on this relevant topic. In the first part of the chapter, Andrea Crisanti discusses the relation between the equilibrium dynamics of mean-field spin glasses and RSB, briefly reviewing the pioneering ideas of Sommers and Sompolinsky and the subsequent theory by Crisanti, Horner and Sommers. Jorge Kurchan and Silvio Franz focus on the slow out-of-equilibrium glassy dynamics, in both mean-field models and finite-dimensional models, connecting the RSB scheme of Parisi with the concept of multithermalization. Finally, Andrea Maiorano overviews recent results on the presence (and absence) of weak ergodicity breaking in mean-field spin glasses, a pivotal assumption in many theoretical studies focusing on aging. © 2023 by World Scientific Publishing Co. Spin-glass effects on critical behavior in systems with extended quenched disorder

L. De Cesare, Maria Teresa Mercaldo

A renormalization-group approach is used for investigating the effects of the Parisi replica symmetry breaking (``spin-glass effects'') on critical properties of d-dimensional systems with extended quenched disorder along ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{d}$ directions. Within a double expansion scheme to first order in $(\ensuremath{\varepsilon}=4\ensuremath{-}d, {\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{d})$ it is found that for $d<~4+{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{d}$ and order-parameter dimensionalities $n<~4,$ a full fixed-point instability with a consequent runaway towards a strong-coupling regime occurs in the parameter space while, for $d<4$ and $n>4,$ compatibly with the modified Harris criterion, an additional marginally stable fixed point exists which might control a new anisotropic random critical behavior. In any case, the traditional replica-symmetric Dorogovtsev-like solution for classical and quantum systems is unstable against the replica symmetry-breaking modes.

Stability and susceptibility in Parisi's solution of a spin glass model

D. J. Thouless, J. R. L. de Almeida, J. Michael Kosterlitz

The stability of Parisi's solution (1979-80) of the infinite-range spin glass model is examined near the transition temperature. It is found that the quadratic terms in the variation of the free energy are all non-positive. The free energy is only a local maximum with respect to q(x) if q is constrained to be a monotonic function of x. The connection between replica symmetry breaking and failure of linear response theory for magnetic susceptibility is shown in more detail. It is shown that the order parameter susceptibility is divergent, as expected, in the spin glass phase.

Equilibrium Dynamics of Infinite-Range Quantum Spin Glasses in a Field

Maria Tikhanovskaya, Subir Sachdev A, Rhine Samajdar

We determine the low-energy spectrum and Parisi replica-symmetry-breaking function for the spin-glass phase of the quantum Ising model with infinite-range random exchange interactions and transverse and longitudinal ( h ) fields. We show that, for all h , the spin-glass state has full replica symmetry breaking and the local spin spectrum is gapless, with a spectral density that vanishes linearly with frequency. These results are obtained using an action functional—argued to yield exact results at low frequencies—that expands in powers of a spin-glass order parameter, which is bilocal in time, and a matrix in replica space. We also present the exact solution of the infinite-range spherical quantum p -rotor model at nonzero h : here, the spin-glass state has one-step replica symmetry breaking and gaplessness only appears after imposition of an additional marginal stability condition. Possible connections to experiments on random arrays of trapped Rydberg atoms are noted. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
