Abstract

Effects of superconducting fluctuations on the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state are discussed in a spatially isotropic three-dimensional superconductor under a magnetic field. For this system, Shimahara recently showed that within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, the long-range order of the FF state is suppressed by the phase fluctuation of the superconducting order parameter. [H. Shimahara: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 67} (1998) 1872, Physica B {\bf 259-261} (1999) 492] In this letter, we investigate this instability of the FF state against superconducting fluctuations from the microscopic viewpoint, employing the theory developed by Noziéres and Schmitt-Rink in the BCS-BEC crossover field. Besides the absence of the second-order phase transition associated with the FF state, we show that even if the pairing interaction is weak, the shift of the chemical potential from the Fermi energy due to the fluctuations is crucial near the critical magnetic field of the FF state obtained within the mean-field theory.

Fulde-Ferrell states and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Shaoyu Yin, J.-P. Martikainen, Päivi Törmä

We study the superfluid properties of two-dimensional spin-population-imbalanced Fermi gases to explore the interplay between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition and the possible instability towards the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state. By the mean-field approximation together with quantum fluctuations, we obtain phase diagrams as functions of temperature, chemical potential imbalance, and binding energy. We find that the fluctuations change the mean-field phase diagram significantly. We also address possible effects of the phase separation and/or the anisotropic FF phase to the BKT mechanism. The superfluid density tensor of the FF state is obtained, and its transverse component is found always vanishing. This causes divergent fluctuations and possibly precludes the existence of the FF state at any nonzero temperature.

Effect of phase fluctuations on the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a three-dimensional Fermi gas

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Jacques Tempere

In ultracold Fermi gases, the effect of spin imbalance on superfluidity has been the subject of intense study. One of the reasons for this is that spin imbalance frustrates the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid pairing mechanism, in which fermions in different spin states combine into Cooper pairs with zero momentum. In 1964, it was proposed that an exotic superfluid state called the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in which the Cooper pairs have nonzero momentum, could exist in a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. At the saddle-point (mean-field) level, it has been shown that the FFLO state only occupies a very small sliver in the ground-state phase diagram of a three-dimensional (3D) Fermi gas. However, a question that remains to be investigated is as follows: What is the influence of phase fluctuations on the FFLO state? In this work, we show that phase fluctuations only lead to relatively small quantitative corrections to the presence of the FFLO state in the saddle-point phase diagram of a 3D spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. Starting from the partition function of the system, we calculate the effective action within the path-integral adiabatic approximation. The action is then expanded up to second order in the fluctuation field around the saddle point, leading to the fluctuation free energy. Using this free energy, we calculate corrections due to phase fluctuations to the BCS-FFLO transition in the saddle-point phase diagram. At temperatures at which the FFLO state exists, we find only small corrections to the size of the FFLO area. Our results suggest that fluctuations of the phase of the FFLO order parameter, which can be interpreted as an oscillation of its momentum vector, do not cause an instability of the FFLO state with respect to the BCS state.

Population-imbalanced lattice fermions near the BCS-BEC crossover: Thermal physics of the breached pair and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases

Madhuparna Karmakar, Pinaki Majumdar

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via a Monte Carlo approach. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for amplitude- and phase-fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram of this strong-coupling problem. At low field we observe the magnetized but homogeneous ``breached pair'' superfluid phase. It reveals that ${T}_{c}$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean-field estimate, spontaneous inhomogeneity in the field-induced magnetization, and a strong nonmonotonicity in the temperature dependence of the low-energy density of states. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram of the imbalanced Fermi gas at unitarity. At higher field we obtain the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. The thermal transition from the FFLO phases to the normal state is strongly first order. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low ${T}_{c}$ itself, while the spin-resolved density of states changes from the ``pseudogapped'' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature.

Fulde–Ferrell superfluids in spinless ultracold Fermi gases

Zhen-Fei Zheng, Guang‐Can Guo, Zhen Zheng +1 more

The Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluid phase, in which fermions form finite momentum Cooper pairings, is well studied in spin-singlet superfluids in past decades. Different from previous works that engineer the FF state in spinful cold atoms, we show that the FF state can emerge in spinless Fermi gases confined in optical lattice associated with nearest-neighbor interactions. The mechanism of the spinless FF state relies on the split Fermi surfaces by tuning the chemistry potential, which naturally gives rise to finite momentum Cooper pairings. The phase transition is accompanied by changed Chern numbers, in which, different from the conventional picture, the band gap does not close. By beyond-mean-field calculations, we find the finite momentum pairing is more robust, yielding the system promising for maintaining the FF state at finite temperature. Finally we present the possible realization and detection scheme of the spinless FF state.

Fulde-Ferrell pairing instability of a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas

Xia-Ji Liu

We theoretically analyze the pairing instability of a three-dimensional ultracold atomic Fermi gas towards a Fulde-Ferrell superfluid, in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field. We use the standard Thouless criterion for the onset of superfluidity, with which the effect of pair fluctuations is partially taken into account by approximately using a mean-field chemical potential at zero temperature. This gives rise to an improved prediction of the superfluid transition temperature beyond mean field, particularly in the strong-coupling unitary limit. We also investigate the pairing instability with increasing Rashba spin-orbit coupling, along the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate of rashbons (i.e., the tightly bound state of two fermions formed by strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling).

Fulde–Ferrell superfluidity in ultracold Fermi gases with Rashba spin–orbit coupling

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

We theoretically investigate the inhomogeneous Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluidity in a three-dimensional atomic Fermi gas with Rashba spin–orbit coupling near a broad Feshbach resonance. We show that within mean-field theory the FF superfluid state is always more favorable than the standard Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superfluid state when an in-plane Zeeman field is applied. We present a qualitative finite-temperature phase diagram near resonance and argue that the predicted FF superfluid is observable with experimentally attainable temperatures (i.e. T ∼ 0.2 T F , where T F is the characteristic Fermi degenerate temperature).
