Three-Fermion Problems in Optical Lattices

Abstract

We present exact results for the spectra of three fermionic atoms in a single well of an optical lattice. For the three lowest hyperfine states of 6Li atoms, we find a Borromean state across the region of the distinct pairwise Feshbach resonances. For 40K atoms, nearby Feshbach resonances are known for two of the pairs, and a bound three-body state develops towards the positive scattering-length side. In addition, we study the sensitivity of our results to atomic details. The predicted few-body phenomena can be realized in optical lattices in the limit of low tunneling.

Microscopic Model for Feshbach Interacting Fermions in an Optical Lattice with Arbitrary Scattering Length and Resonance Width

Michael L. Wall, Lincoln D. Carr

We numerically study the problem of two fermions in a three-dimensional optical lattice interacting via a zero-range Feshbach resonance and display the dispersions of the bound states as a two-particle band structure with unique features compared to typical single-particle band structures. We show that the exact two-particle solutions of a projected Hamiltonian may be used to define an effective two-channel, few-band model for the low-energy, low-density physics of many fermions at arbitrary s-wave scattering length. Our method applies to resonances of any width and can be adapted to multichannel situations or higher-ℓ pairing. In strong contrast to usual Hubbard physics, we find that pair hopping is significantly altered by strong interactions and the presence of the lattice, and the lattice induces multiple molecular bound states.

Molecules of Fermionic Atoms in an Optical Lattice

Thilo Stöferle, Henning Moritz, Kenneth Günter +2 more

We create molecules from fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice using a Feshbach resonance. In the limit of low tunneling, the individual wells can be regarded as independent three-dimensional harmonic oscillators. The measured binding energies for varying scattering length agree excellently with the theoretical prediction for two interacting atoms in a harmonic oscillator. We demonstrate that the formation of molecules can be used to measure the occupancy of the lattice and perform thermometry.

Strongly Interacting Atoms and Molecules in a 3D Optical Lattice

Michael Köhl, Kenneth Günter, Thilo Stöferle +1 more

Abstract. We report on the realization of a strongly interacting quantum degenerate gas of fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We prepare a bandinsulating state for a two-component Fermi gas with one atom per spin state per lattice site. Using a Feshbach resonance, we induce strong interactions between the atoms. When sweeping the magnetic field from the repulsive side towards the attractive side of the Feshbach resonance we induce a coupling between Bloch bands leading to a transfer of atoms from the lowest band into higher bands. Sweeping the magnetic field across the Feshbach resonance from the attractive towards the repulsive side leads to two-particle bound states and ultimately to the formation of molecules. From the fraction of formed molecules we determine the temperature of the atoms in the lattice.

Speed of sound in a superfluid Fermi gas in an optical lattice

Zlatko G. Koinov

A system of equal mixture of $^6Li$ atomic Fermi gas of two hyperfine states loaded into a cubic three-dimensional optical lattice is studied assuming a negative scattering length (BCS side of the Feshbach resonance). When the interaction is attractive, fermionic atoms can pair and form a superfluid. The dispersion of the phonon-like mode and the speed of sound in the long-wavelength limit are obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equations for the collective modes of the attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian.

Feshbach resonant scattering of three fermions in one-dimensional wells

Tanja Đurić, A. F. Ho, Derek K. K. Lee

We calculate the spectrum for three atoms in a one-dimensional harmonic well near an $s$-wave Feshbach resonance using a two-channel model to describe the Feshbach physics. This is relevant to the study of cold $^{40}\text{K}$ atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Our results indicate that, for this one-dimensional system, one- and two-channel models will differ close to the Feshbach resonance, although the two theories would converge in the limit of strong Feshbach coupling. We also find level crossings in the low-energy spectrum of a single well with three atoms that may lead to quantum phase transition for an optical lattice of many wells. We discuss the stability of the system to a phase with nonuniform density.
