Modulation of Local Magnetization in Two-Dimensional Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising Model

Abstract

The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied in two dimensions at finite temperature using the density matrix renormalization group. The model exhibits phase transition of the second-order between the antiphase in low temperature and the modulated phase in high temperature. Observing the domain wall free energy, we confirm that the modulation period in high-temperature side is well explained by the free-fermion picture.

Density-matrix renormalization-group study of the disorder line in the quantum axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Matteo Beccaria A, Massimo Campostrini B, Alessandra Feo

We apply density-matrix renormalization-group methods to study the phase diagram of the quantum axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in the region of low frustration where the ferromagnetic coupling is larger than the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic one. By finite-size scaling on lattices with up to 80 sites we locate precisely the transition line from the ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase without spatial modulation. We then measure and analyze the spin-spin correlation function in order to determine the disorder transition line where a modulation appears. We give strong numerical support to the conjecture that the Peschel-Emery one-dimensional line actually coincides with the disorder line. We also show that the critical exponent governing the vanishing of the modulation parameter at the disorder transition is ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{q}=1∕2$.

Low Temperature Phase of a Dilute Axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising Model in Two Dimensions

Fumitaka Matsubara, Nobuo Suzuki, Takayuki Shirakura

We examine the ground state of a dilute two-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising model with the interaction ratio κ (≡ −J2/J1) > 1/2. We calculate the spin overlap function Q together with the antiphase (〈2〉 phase) magnetization M〈2〉 on medium lattices of L × L (L ≤ 24) using a cluster heat bath method. The 〈2〉 phase is destroyed by a small quantity of non-magnetic atoms due to a random impurity effect, and a critical phase is realized, which is composed of segments of four types of 〈2〉 domains arranged in order. As the spin concentration c decreases, a critical phase with different ferromagnetic clusters appears near above the percolation threshold cp of the lattice. A phase diagram is proposed in the \((\kappa ,c)\) plain at low temperatures.

Zero-temperature dynamics in the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Soham Biswas, Anjan Kumar Chandra, Parongama Sen

We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model following a quench to zero temperature. The Hamiltonian is given by H= -J_(0) summation operator(L)_(i,j=1)S_(i,j)S_(i+1,j)-J_(1)summation operator_(i,j=1)(S_{i,j}S_{i,j+1}-kappaS_{i,j}S_{i,j+2}) . For kappa<1 , the system does not reach the equilibrium ground state but slowly evolves to a metastable state. For kappa>1 , the system shows a behavior similar to that of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the sense that it freezes to a striped state with a finite probability. The persistence probability shows algebraic decay here with an exponent theta=0.235+/-0.001 while the dynamical exponent of growth z=2.08+/-0.01 . For kappa=1 , the system belongs to a completely different dynamical class; it always evolves to the true ground state with the persistence and dynamical exponent having unique values. Much of the dynamical phenomena can be understood by studying the dynamics and distribution of the number of domain walls. We also compare the dynamical behavior to that of a Ising model in which both the nearest and next-nearest-neighbor interactions are ferromagnetic.

Resolving the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model using transfer matrices

Yi Tao Hu, Patrick Charbonneau

Some features of the phase diagram of the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model have long been debated. The extended structural correlations and long relaxation times associated with its Kosterlitz-Thouless phase indeed result in analytical and numerical treatments making contradictory predictions. Here, we introduce a numerical transfer matrix approach that bypasses these problems and thus clears up various ambiguities. In particular, we confirm the transition temperatures and the order of the transition to the floating incommensurate phase. Our approach motivates considering transfer matrices for solving long-standing problems in related models.

Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition of the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in two dimensions

Takayuki Shirakura, Fumitaka Matsubara, Naoki Suzuki

The spin structure of an axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in two dimensions (2D) is a renewed problem because different Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methods predicted different spin orderings. The usual equilibrium simulation predicts the occurrence of a floating incommensurate (IC) Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type phase, which never emerges in non-equilibrium relaxation (NER) simulations. In this paper, we first examine previously published results of both methods, and then investigate a higher transition temperature ${T}_{c1}$ between the IC and paramagnetic phases. In the usual equilibrium simulation, we calculate the chain magnetization on larger lattices (up to $512\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}512$ sites) and estimate ${T}_{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}1.16J$ with frustration ratio $\ensuremath{\kappa}(\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1})=0.6$. We examine the nature of the phase transition in terms of the Binder ratio ${g}_{L}$ of spin overlap functions and the correlation-length ratio $\ensuremath{\xi}/L$. In the NER simulation, we observe the spin dynamics in equilibrium states by means of an autocorrelation function and also observe the chain magnetization relaxations from the ground and disordered states. These quantities exhibit an algebraic decay at $T\ensuremath{\lesssim}1.17J$. We conclude that the two-dimensional ANNNI model actually admits an IC phase transition of the KT type.

Phase diagram of the three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Andrej Gendiar, Tomotoshi Nishino

The three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied by a modified tensor product variational approach. A global phase diagram is constructed with numerous commensurate and incommensurate magnetic phases. The devil's stairs behavior for the model is confirmed. The wavelength of the spin modulated phases increases to infinity at the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase. Widths of the commensurate phases are considerably narrower than those calculated by mean-field approximations.
