Abstract

Systematic measurements of auto- and cross-correlations of photons emitted from individual $\mathrm{Cd}\mathrm{Te}∕\mathrm{Zn}\mathrm{Te}$ quantum dots under pulsed excitation were used to elucidate nonresonant excitation mechanisms in this self-assembled system. Memory effects extending over a few excitation pulses have been detected in agreement with previous reports and quantitatively described by a rate equation model, fitting a complete set of correlation and PL intensity results. The important role of single carrier trapping in the quantum dot was established. An explanation was suggested for the unusually wide antibunching dip observed previously in $X\text{\ensuremath{-}}X$ autocorrelation experiments on quantum dots under cw excitation.

Single photon correlation measurements in a study of excitation process of individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots

Abstract We present the results of systematic autocorrelation and cross‐correlation measurements performed on photons originating from various excitonic transitions in a single CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot (QD). Excitation power dependence of photoluminescence intensity was also measured on the same dot under the same experimental conditions. Recorded correlation histograms have provided evidence for memory effects in QD photoluminescence extending over a few excitation periods. Rate equation model assuming a ladder of states and excitation through a single carrier and exciton capture, is fitted to the data. As a consequence, simultaneous quantitative description of the results of both, correlation and power dependence, is obtained. Strong evidence is presented for a QD excitation by capture of single carriers rather than entire excitons. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

We report correlation and cross-correlation continuous wave measurements in II-VI quantum dots grown by molecular beam epitaxy.Combination of spectral selection, saturation measurements and good temporal resolution allowed us to see an antibunching effect on photons from radiative recombination of excitons in a single CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot, as well as cross-correlation within the biexciton (X2)-exciton (X) radiative cascade from the same dot.We discuss the results of our experiments in terms of a model of excitonic multitransitions.

Second-Order Correlation Function of the Photon Emission from a Single Quantum Dot

Yaoyi Li, Mu-Tian Cheng, Zhou Hui-Jun +2 more

The photon correlation of photon emission from a single quantum dot with cw excitation and pulsed excitation is investigated in details. To calculate the second-order correlation function for optical pumping, we deduce rate equations with a simplified two-level model under cw excitation and present the master equation approach in the interaction picture to the study of evolution of a three-level system under pulsed excitation. In addition, we report photon correlation measurements on a single self-assembled In 0.5 Ga 0.5 As quantum dot, which show strong antibunching behaviour under both the conditions of cw and pulsed excitations. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental measurements.

Single quantum dots emit single photons at a time: Antibunching experiments

Val Zwiller, Hans Blom, Per Jonsson +7 more

We have studied the photoluminescence correlation from a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled Stranski–Krastanow quantum dot under continuous, as well as under pulsed excitation. Under weak continuous excitation, where the single dot luminescence is due primarily to single exciton recombinations, antibunching is observed in the single dot emission correlation. Under weak pulsed excitation, the number of photons emitted by the quantum dot per pulse is close to one. We present data obtained under both conditions and are able to show that devices based on single quantum dots can be used to generate single photons.

Correlation spectroscopy of excitons and biexcitons on a single quantum dot

Val Zwiller, Per Jonsson, Hans Blom +7 more

We report the observation of antibunched emission from single self-assembled InAs quantum dots under various conditions. We have measured the correlation function of the photon emission pertaining to single emission lines from single quantum dots under continuous and pulsed laser excitation, as well as under continuous white light excitation. The measurements were performed under different excitation intensities at liquid helium temperatures on two samples with distinct structures. At higher temperatures (30 K), an antibunching dip was still observed. We have also observed antibunching on a second emission line in the quantum dot spectrum, attributed to the biexciton, demonstrating the possibility of generating photon pairs with a single quantum dot. Polarization correlations on the biexciton and exciton line were also measured in an attempt to generate entangled photon pairs.

Time correlation measurement on single self-assembled quantum dots

Yasunori Toda, Takuya Sugimoto, Masao Nishioka +1 more

Summary form only given. The spectroscopy of individual quantum dots (QDs) using optical micro-probing techniques is opening up possibilities of various applications based on the physics of the zero-dimensional (0D) semiconductor structures. Self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) are also attractive 0D structures, where strong confinement on a no-meter scale can be realized. Here, we carried out time-correlation measurements of excited carriers in single SAQDs in order to realize coherent optical control. The sharpness of the resonance lines in single dot photoluminescence allows us to observe a long phase relaxation time.
