Abstract

We examine the spinless one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) below half filling, addressing both the binary alloy and valence transition interpretations of the model. Using a nonperturbative technique, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the occupation of the localized orbitals, providing a comprehensive description of charge order in the FKM. In particular, we uncover the contradictory ordering roles of the forwardscattering and backscattering itinerant electrons: the latter are responsible for the crystalline phases, while the former produces the phase separation. We find an Ising model describes the transition between the phase separated state and the crystalline phases; for weak coupling we present the critical line equation, finding excellent agreement with numerical results. We consider several extensions of the FKM that preserve the classical nature of the localized states. We also investigate a parallel between the FKM and the Kondo lattice model, suggesting a close relationship based upon the similar orthogonality catastrophe physics of the associated single-impurity models.

Correlated Hopping in the 1D Falicov--Kimball Model

Z. Gajek, R. Lemański

Both canonical and grand canonical phase diagrams of the one dimensional Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) with correlated hopping are presented for several values of the model parameters. Using the method of restricted phase diagrams the system has been studied in the thermodynamic limit. As compare to the conventional FKM, the diagrams exhibit a loss of the particle-hole symmetry. PACS D5.30.Fk, 71.30+h As the simplest, still non-trivial model of highly correlated electron systems, the Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) attracts growing attention among solid state physicists. It can describe variety of the most intriguing cooperative phenomena, as metal-insulator transition, mixed-valence phenomenon etc. (see e.g. the review [1]). The model deals with itinerant particles (electrons) that can hope between nearest-neighbor sites. Some of lattice sites are occupied by non-movable particles, playing a role of ions or localized electrons; we call them ”ions”. The only interaction in the system is the on-site, Coulomb-type interaction between the electrons and the ions. The interaction generates long-range correlations between the ions. The model has been investigated thoroughly in nineties. Numerous approximate results supplemented with some exact and rigorous statements reported up to now provide a good basis for further extensions of the model towards more realistic physical situations. These include the discussed here model with correlated hopping, according to which the electron hopping rate depends on occupations of relevant sites. Bosonization Solution of the Falicov-Kimball Model

P. M. R. Brydon, M. Gulácsi

We use a novel approach to analyze the one-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model. We derive a simple effective model for the occupation of the localized orbitals which clearly reveals the origin of the known ordering. Our study is extended to a quantum model with hybridization between the localized and itinerant states: We find a crossover between the well-known weak- and strong-coupling behaviors. The existence of electronic polarons at intermediate coupling is confirmed. A phase diagram is presented and discussed in detail.

THE SPINLESS FALICOV–KIMBALL MODEL AWAY FROM HALF-FILLING

Štefan Gál

The one-dimensional spinless Falicov–Kimball (FKM) model is studied in the strong coupling limit away from half-filling. The small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations are employed to obtain valence transitions in the ground state and for finite temperatures. It is found that in the ground state, the model describes continuous valence transitions for small band-fillings and both continuous and discontinuous transitions near half-filling. At finite temperatures, only continuous valence transitions are obtained. The valence is integer at low temperatures for small band-fillings and in other cases, it takes only intermediate values.

Ground states of the Falicov-Kimball model with correlated hopping

Jacek Wojtkiewicz, R. Lemański

Two-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) with correlated hopping is studied perturbatively in the limit of large on-site Coulomb interaction U. In the half filled case (i.e., ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i}+{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{e}=1,$ where ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i},{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{e}$ are densities of ions and electrons, respectively) the effective Hamiltonian in spin variables is derived up to terms proportional to ${U}^{\ensuremath{-}3}.$ Unlike the simplest FKM case, it contains odd parity terms (resulting from the correlated hopping) in addition to even parity ones. The ground-state phase diagram of the effective Hamiltonian is examined in the $(a/t,h)$ plane, where $a/t$ is a parameter characterizing strength of the correlated hopping and h is a difference of chemical potentials of two sorts of particles present in the system. It appears to be asymmetric with respect to the change $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{h}\ensuremath{-}h$ and an additional ordered phase is found for a certain interval of $a/t.$

Ground-state phase diagrams of the generalized Falicov-Kimball model with Hund coupling

R. Lemański, Jakub Wrzodak

Charge and spin orderings are studied on the simplest one-dimensional (1D) and the two-dimensional (2D) square lattices within the generalized Falicov-Kimball model with Hund coupling between localized and itinerant electrons. Using the restricted phase diagram method (RPDM), a number of simple rules of formation of various sorts of ground-state phases have been detected. In particular, relationships between density of current carriers (electrons or holes) and type of charge and magnetic arrangement have been determined. In two dimensions in the mixed-valence regime, only axial stripes (vertical or horizontal) have been found for intermediate values of the coupling constants. They are composed of ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic chains interchanged with nonmagnetic ones. For band fillings close to the half filling, stripe phases oriented along one of the main diagonal direction are formed. The results suggest the possibility of tuning modulations of charge and magnetic superstructures with a change in doping.

Phase stability, charge ordering, and charge-liquid formation in the Falicov–Kimball model on triangular and kagome lattices

Ammar Nejati, Marvin Lenk

Abstract We present a systematic investigation of the stability of the phase diagram of the spinless Falicov–Kimball model on two-dimensional non-bipartite lattices, the triangular and kagome lattices, using Markov-chain Monte Carlo simulations. Three filling or chemical potential conditions are examined: fixed chemical potentials ( $$\mu _f = \mu _c = U/2$$ μ f = μ c = U / 2 ), “generalized” half-filling ( $$\bar{n}_f = 1/3$$ n ¯ f = 1 / 3 , $$\bar{n}_c = 2/3$$ n ¯ c = 2 / 3 ), and conventional half-filling ( $$\bar{n}_f = \bar{n}_c = 1/2$$ n ¯ f = n ¯ c = 1 / 2 ). For each condition, the effects of a perturbatively small next-nearest-neighbor hopping are studied. On the triangular lattice, Anderson insulator, Mott insulator, and charge-density wave (CDW) phases are found in all cases, with the CDW driven by Coulomb interaction-mediated nesting. Evidence for a charge-liquid regime is found in the region between the weakly correlated regime and the CDW, characterized by competing charge-ordering wavevectors and the absence of universal scaling behavior, whose extent shrinks progressively from the grand-canonical to the conventional half-filling condition. On the kagome lattice, the CDW phase is completely absent; instead, an insulating ground state, plausibly of the Mott type, is found, with signatures of a possible quantum phase transition at zero temperature. Our results establish the crucial role of lattice geometry and particle-hole symmetry breaking in shaping the phase diagram of correlated electron systems. Bottom: The corresponding phase diagram of the Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) on each lattice, illustrating the non-Fermi liquid (nFL), charge-density wave (CDW), Anderson insulator (AI) and Mott insulator (MI) regimes.
