Full Counting Statistics of Chiral Luttinger Liquids with Impurities

Abstract

We study the statistics of charge transfer through an impurity in a chiral Luttinger liquid (realized experimentally as a quantum point contact in a fractional quantum Hall edge state device). Taking advantage of the integrability we present a procedure for obtaining the cumulant generating function of the probability distribution to transfer a fixed amount of charge through the constriction. Using this approach we analyze in detail the behavior of the third cumulant C3 as a function of applied voltage, temperature, and barrier height. We predict that C3 can be used to measure the fractional charge at temperatures, which are several orders of magnitude higher than those needed to extract the fractional charge from the measurement of the second cumulant. Moreover, we identify the component of C3, which carries the information about the fractional charge.

Statistics of charge transfer through impurities in strongly correlated 1D metals

A. Komnik, Björn Trauzettel, U. Weiss

We review recent advances in the field of full counting statistics (FCS) of charge transfer through impurities imbedded into strongly correlated one-dimensional metallic systems, modelled by Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs). We concentrate on the exact analytic solutions for the cumulant generating function (CGF), which became available recently and apply these methods in order to obtain the FCS of a non-trivial contact between two crossed TLL.

Density-density correlation functions of chiral Luttinger liquids with a point-contact impurity

Nikhil Danny Babu, Girish S. Setlur

Abstract The density-density correlation functions (most singular parts) of chiral Luttinger liquids forming the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) edge are systematically derived in presence of a point-contact junction acting as a localised scalar impurity and are shown to be expressible as compact analytical functions with second order poles and involving the bare scale-independent reflection and transmission coefficients. The results are validated on comparison with standard fermionic perturbation theory. The linear response Hall conductance in the absence of a point-contact is recovered from the obtained density-density correlation functions (DDCF). The system under consideration is inhomogeneous with broken translational invariance and for such systems in one dimension, the connected moments of the density fluctuation operator beyond second order need not be included in order to retrieve the most singular parts of the correlations. The reason being that all odd moments of the density are zero and all higher order even moments are less singular than the quadratic moment. The implications of these results when used in conjunction with bosonization methods in presence of impurity backscattering is briefly discussed.

Current statistics of correlated charge tunnelling through an impurity in a 1D wire

Alexander Herzog, Ulrich Weiß

We review recent advances in the full counting statistics of a generic transport model of a quantum Brownian particle. The model applies to charge transfer through an impurity embedded in a Luttinger liquid environment, to a coherent one-channel conductor in a resistive environment, and to a resistively shunted Josephson junction device. We derive analytic expressions for the cumulant generating function (CGF) at two particular values of the Luttinger parameter which are related by self-duality. We determine the self-duality relations between the CGFs and between the cumulants.

Fractional charge in the noise of Luttinger liquid systems (Invited Paper)

Björn Trauzettel, Inès Safi A, Fabrizio Dolcini +1 more

The current noise of a voltage biased interacting quantum wire adiabatically connected to metallic leads is computed in presence of an impurity in the wire. We find that in the weak backscattering limit the Fano factor characterizing the ratio between shot noise and backscattering current crucially depends on the noise frequency relative to the ballistic frequency vF/gL, where vF is the Fermi velocity, g the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter, and L the length of the wire. In contrast to chiral Luttinger liquids, the noise is not only due to the Poissonian backscattering of fractionally charged quasiparticles at the impurity, but also depends on Andreev-type reflections of plasmons at the contacts, so that the frequency dependence of the noise needs to be analyzed to extract the fractional charge of the bulk excitations. We show that the frequencies needed to see interaction effects in the Fano factor are within experimental reach.

Appearance of Fractional Charge in the Noise of Nonchiral Luttinger Liquids

The current noise of a voltage biased interacting quantum wire adiabatically connected to metallic leads is computed in the presence of an impurity in the wire. We find that in the weak backscattering limit the Fano factor characterizing the ratio between noise and backscattered current crucially depends on the noise frequency omega relative to the ballistic frequency vF/gL, where vF is the Fermi velocity, g is the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter, and L is the length of the wire. In contrast to chiral Luttinger liquids the noise is not only due to the Poissonian backscattering of fractionally charged quasiparticles at the impurity, but it also depends on Andreev-type reflections at the contacts, so that the frequency dependence of the noise needs to be analyzed to extract the fractional charge e*=eg of the bulk excitations.
