Abstract

We derive and study the Bloch and Bogoliubov spectrum of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a one-dimensional optical superlattice (created by interference between a primary optical lattice and a secondary optical lattice of small strength), using the Bogoliubov approximation and the hydrodynamic theory with mode coupling. We show that a BEC in an optical superlattice experiences two different tunnelling parameters and hence behaves like a diatomic chain. We derive expressions for the tunnelling parameters as a function of the strength of the primary and secondary lattice. This gives rise to a gapped branch in addition to the gapless acoustical branch in the Bogoliubov spectrum. The spectrum strongly depends on the strength of the secondary lattice, the interaction parameter and the number density of atoms. The effective mass is found to increase as the depth of the secondary optical lattice increases, a property that was utilized in Paraedes et al (2004 Nature 429 277) to achieve the Tonks–Girardeau regime. The coupling between the inhomogeneous density in the radial plane and the density modulation along the optical lattice gives rise to a multibranch Bogoliubov spectrum.

Transport behaviour of a Bose Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

Bhattacherjee, Aranya, Pietrzyk, Monika

The Bloch and dipole oscillations of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical superlattice is investigated. We show that the effective mass increases in an optical superlattice, which leads to localization of the BEC, in accordance with recent experimental observations [17]. In addition, we find that the secondary optical lattice is a useful additional tool to manipulate the dynamics of the atoms.

Abstract We investigate the Bloch and dipole oscillations of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical superlattice. We show that, as the effective mass increases in an optical superlattice, the BEC is localized in accordance with recent experimental observations [J.E. Lye et. al. Phys. Rev. A 75, 061603 (2007)]. In addition, we find that the secondary optical lattice is a useful additional tool to manipulate the dynamics of the atoms.

Bogoliubov spectrum of a cigar-shaped Fermi superfluid in an optical lattice at the BEC–BCS crossover

Aranya B. Bhattacherjee

We study the Bogoliubov spectrum of an elongated Fermi superfluid confined in an one-dimensional superfluid along the Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC)-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) crossover. We derive analytic expressions for the sound velocity, effective mass and the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of the axial quasiparticles long the crossover based on the hydrodynamic theory. Our investigation reveal interesting signatures of BEC-BCS crossover in an optical lattice which deserve experimental investigation.

Oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical superlattice

Chou-Chun Huang, W. C. Wu

Oscillations of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a 1D optical lattice with a two-point basis is investigated. In the low-frequency regime, four branches of modes are resolved, that correspond to the transverse in-phase and out-of-phase breathing modes, and the longitudinal acoustic and optical phonon modes of the condensates. Dispersions of these modes depend intimately on the values of two intersite Josephson tunneling strengths, ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$, and the on-site repulsion $U$ between the atoms. Observation of these mode dispersions is thus a direct way to access them.

Compressibility, Bloch bands and elementary excitations

Meret Krämer, S. Stringari

We discuss the Bloch-state solutions of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation and of the Bogoliubov equations for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The results for the compressibility, effective mass and velocity of sound are analysed as a function of the lattice depth and of the strength of the two-body interaction. The band structure of the spectrum of elementary excitations is compared with the one exhibited by the stationary solutions (Bloch bands). Moreover, the numerical calculations are compared with the analytic predictions of the tight binding approximation. We also discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and show that the condensate exhibits 3D, 2D or 1D features depending on the lattice depth and on the number of particles occupying each potential well. We finally show how, using a local density approximation, our results can be applied to study the behaviour of the gas in the presence of harmonic trapping.

Superfluid dynamics of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodic potential

C Menotti, A Smerzi, A Trombettoni

We investigate the superfluid properties of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a one-dimensional periodic potential. We study, both analytically (in the tight binding limit) and numerically, the Bloch chemical potential, the Bloch energy and the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, and we introduce two different, density dependent, effective masses and group velocities. The Bogoliubov spectrum predicts the existence of sound waves, and the arising of energetic and dynamical instabilities at critical values of the BEC quasi-momentum which dramatically affect its coherence properties. We investigate the dependence of the dipole and Bloch oscillation frequencies in terms of an effective mass averaged over the density of the condensate. We illustrate our results with several animations obtained solving numerically the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation.
