Time-domain measurements of quasiparticle tunneling rates in a single-Cooper-pair transistor

Abstract

We have measured, in real time, individual quasiparticle tunneling in a single-Cooper-pair transistor, using rf reflectometry on the supercurrent branch. We have extracted the even-to-odd and odd-to-even transition rates directly by analyzing the distributions of dwell times in the even and odd states of the transistor. We discuss both the measurement and analysis techniques and report on the temperature and gate dependence of the quasiparticle tunneling rates.

Quantitative study of quasiparticle traps using the single-Cooper-pair transistor

Nadia Court, Andrew J. Ferguson, Roman M. Lutchyn +1 more

We use radio-frequency reflectometry to measure quasiparticle tunneling rates in the single-Cooper-pair transistor. Devices with and without quasiparticle traps in proximity to the island are studied. A ${10}^{2}$- to ${10}^{3}$-fold reduction in the quasiparticle tunneling rate onto the island is observed in the case of quasiparticle traps. In the quasiparticle trap samples we also measure a commensurate decrease in quasiparticle tunneling rate off the island.

Kinetics of nonequilibrium quasiparticle tunneling in superconducting charge qubits

Matthew D. Shaw, Roman M. Lutchyn, Per Delsing +1 more

We directly observe low-temperature nonequilibrium quasiparticle tunneling in charge qubits based on the single-Cooper-pair box. We measure even- and odd-state dwell-time distributions as a function of temperature, and interpret these results using a kinetic theory. While the even-state lifetime is exponentially distributed, the odd-state distribution is more heavily weighted to short times, implying that odd-to-even tunnel events are not described by a homogenous Poisson process. The mean odd-state dwell time increases sharply at low temperature, which is consistent with quasiparticles tunneling out of the island before reaching thermal equilibrium.

Quasiparticle cooling of a single Cooper pair transistor

Andrew J. Ferguson

A superconducting tunnel junction is used to directly extract quasiparticles from one of the leads of a single Cooper pair transistor. The consequent reduction in quasiparticle density causes a lower rate of quasiparticle tunneling onto the device. This rate is directly measured by radio-frequency reflectometry. Local cooling may be of direct benefit in reducing the effect of quasiparticles on coherent superconducting nanostructures.

Microsecond Resolution of Quasiparticle Tunneling in the Single-Cooper-Pair Transistor

Andrew J. Ferguson, Nadia Court, Fay E. Hudson +1 more

We present radio-frequency measurements on a single-Cooper-pair-transistor in which individual quasiparticle poisoning events were observed with microsecond temporal resolution. Thermal activation of the quasiparticle dynamics is investigated, and consequently, we are able to determine energetics of the poisoning and unpoisoning processes. In particular, we are able to assign an effective quasiparticle temperature to parametrize the poisoning rate.

Two-quasiparticle tunneling in all-superconducting single-electron transistors

Jens Siewert

We study coherent two-quasiparticle tunneling in all-superconducting single-electron transistors in the framework of the tunneling Hamiltonian formalism. We discuss the interplay of the two-quasiparticle transfer and the superposition of charge states due to Cooper-pair transitions and calculate the tunneling rate. By using this rate in a master equation we compute complete current-voltage characteristics which we compare to recent experimental results.

Charge and current fluctuations in a superconducting single-electron transistor near a Cooper pair resonance

Mahn‐Soo Choi, Francesco Plastina, Rosario Fazio

We analyze charge tunneling statistics and current noise in a superconducting single-electron transistor in a regime where the Josephson-quasiparticle cycle is the dominant mechanism of transport. Due to the interplay between Coulomb blockade and Josephson coherence, the probability distribution for tunneling events strongly deviates from a Poissonian and displays a pronounced even-odd asymmetry in the number of transmitted charges. The interplay between charging and coherence is reflected also in the zero-frequency current noise which is significantly quenched when the quasiparticle tunneling rates are comparable to the coherent Cooper pair oscillation frequency. Furthermore, the finite frequency spectrum shows a strong enhancement near the resonant transition frequency for Josephson tunneling.
