Local-spin-density functional for multideterminant density functional theory

Abstract

Based on exact limits and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain, at any density and spin polarization, an accurate estimate for the energy of a modified homogeneous electron gas where electrons repel each other only with a long-range Coulombic tail. This allows us to construct an analytic local-spin-density exchange-correlation functional appropriate to new, multideterminantal versions of the density functional theory, where quantum chemistry and approximate exchange-correlation functionals are combined to optimally describe both long- and short-range electron correlations.

Local-density-matrix approximation: Exact asymptotic results for a high-density homogeneous electron gas

Jerzy Ciosłowski, Katarzyna Pernal

Scaling arguments show that the exchange-correlation energy density of a spin-unpolarized homogeneous electron gas equals $A{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{4∕3}$, where $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is given by a simple functional of the momentum distribution $n(k)$ and $A$ is a constant. This functional possesses the property of yielding the true $n(k)$ (including the discontinuity at the Fermi momentum, which is not reproduced by any of the presently known density matrix functionals) upon minimization of the energy density $e$ constrained by the electron density $\ensuremath{\rho}$. At the limit of $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, $\ensuremath{\omega}$ coincides with $\ensuremath{\rho}$ and the dependence of $\ensuremath{\omega}$ on $n(k)$, which can be readily recovered from the actual values of $e$ and $n(k)$, is given by an explicit analytical formula. Application of this formalism to general Coulombic systems yields a local version of the density matrix theory, in which the exchange-correlation energy is given by a spatial integral of an expression that depends on the amplitudes of natural orbitals at a given point and the respective occupation numbers.

Pair-distribution functions of the two-dimensional electron gas

Paola Gori‐Giorgi, Saverio Moroni, Giovanni B. Bachelet

Based on its known exact properties and a new set of extensive fixed-node reptation quantum Monte Carlo simulations (both with and without backflow correlations, which in this case turn out to yield negligible improvements), we propose an analytical representation of (i) the spin-summed pair-distribution function and (ii) the spin-resolved potential energy of the ideal two-dimensional interacting electron gas for a wide range of electron densities and spin polarization, plus (iii) the spin-resolved pair-distribution function of the unpolarized gas. These formulas provide an accurate reference for quantities previously not available in analytic form, and may be relevant to semiconductor heterostructures and quantum dots both directly, in terms of phase diagram and spin susceptibility, and indirectly, as key ingredients for the construction of new two-dimensional spin density functionals, beyond the local approximation.

Long-range density-matrix-functional theory: Application to a modified homogeneous electron gas

Katarzyna Pernal

We propose a method that employs functionals of the one-electron reduced density matrix (density matrix) to capture long-range effects of electron correlation. The complementary short-range regime is treated with density functionals. In an effort to find approximations for the long-range density-matrix functional, a modified power functional is applied to the homogeneous electron gas with Coulomb interactions replaced by their corresponding long-range counterparts. For the power $\ensuremath{\beta}=1/2$ and the range-separation parameter $\ensuremath{\omega}=1/{r}_{s}$, the functional reproduces the correlation and the kinetic correlation energies with a remarkable accuracy for intermediate and large values of ${r}_{s}$. Analysis of the Euler equation corresponding to this functional reveals correct ${r}_{s}$ expansion of the correlation energy in the limit of large ${r}_{s}$. The first expansion coefficient is in very good agreement with that obtained from the modified Wigner-Seitz model.

Spin resolved energy parametrization of a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas

By carrying out extensive lattice regularized diffusion Monte Carlo calculations, we study the spin and density dependence of the ground-state energy for a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas, with harmonic transverse confinement and long-range 1/ r interactions. We present a parametrization of the exchange–correlation energy suitable for spin density functional calculations, which fulfils exact low and high density limits.

Performance of one-body reduced density-matrix functionals for the homogeneous electron gas

Nektarios N. Lathiotakis, N. Helbig, Eberhard K. U. Gross

The subject of this study is the exchange-correlation-energy functional of reduced density-matrix functional theory. Approximations of this functional are tested by applying them to the homogeneous electron gas. We find that two approximations recently proposed by Gritsenko et al., [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 204102 (2005)] yield considerably better correlation energies and momentum distributions than previously known functionals. We introduce modifications to these functionals, which, by construction, reproduce the exact correlation energy of the homogeneous electron gas.

Exchange-correlation approximations for reduced-density-matrix-functional theory at finite temperature: Capturing magnetic phase transitions in the homogeneous electron gas

Tim Baldsiefen, Attila Cangi, F. G. Eich +1 more

We derive an intrinsically temperature-dependent approximation to the correlation grand potential for many-electron systems in thermodynamical equilibrium in the context of finite-temperature reduced-density-matrix-functional theory (FT-RDMFT). We demonstrate its accuracy by calculating the magnetic phase diagram of the homogeneous electron gas. We compare it to known limits from highly accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations as well as to phase diagrams obtained within existing exchange-correlation approximations from density functional theory and zero-temperature RDMFT.
