Abstract

We revisit the phase transition from the N\'eel ordered to a valence bond solid (VBS) state in the two-dimensional ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. In the first part we address the question whether or not this transition could be an example of a second-order phase transition due to a deconfinement of spinons. We give arguments based on series expansion and spin-wave theory that this is not the case and the transition is most likely first order. The method proposed here to detect first-order phase transitions seems to be very sensitive and might be useful in other models as well. In the second part we analyze possible VBS patterns in the magnetically disordered phase based on numerical data for different susceptibilities, obtained in the ordered phase, which test the breaking of lattice symmetries. We conclude that a columnar dimerization pattern is the most likely candidate.

Absence of spin liquid phase in the J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Xiangjian Qian, Mingpu Qin

We perform an in-depth investigation of the phase diagram of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. We take advantage of density matrix renormalization group and fully augmented matrix product states methods and reach unprecedented accuracy with large bond dimensions. We utilize excited-level crossing analysis to pinpoint the phase transition points. It was believed before that there exists a narrow spin liquid phase sandwiched by the N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence bond solid (VBS) phases. Through careful finite-size scaling of the level crossing points, we find a direct phase transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$, suggesting the absence of an intermediate spin liquid phase. We also provide accurate results for ground-state energies for a variety of sizes, from which we find that the transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases is continuous. These results indicate the existence of a deconfined quantum critical point at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$ in the model. From the crossing of the first derivative of the energies with ${J}_{2}$ for different sizes, we also determine the precise location of the first-order phase transition between the VBS and stripe AFM phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.610(5)$.

Ground state phases of the spin-1/2 J1–J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice: A high-order coupled cluster treatment

R. Darradi, Oleg Derzhko, Ronald Zinke +3 more

Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and complementary exact diagonalization studies we investigate the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}--{J}_{2}$ frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We have calculated the ground state energy, the magnetic order parameter, the spin stiffness, and several generalized susceptibilities to probe magnetically disordered quantum valence-bond phases. We have found that the quantum critical points for both the N\'eel and collinear orders are ${J}_{2}^{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}^{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the results obtained by other approximations. In contrast to the recent study by [Sirker et al. Phys. Rev. B 73, 184420 (2006)], our data do not provide evidence for the transition from the N\'eel to the valence-bond solid state to be first order. Moreover, our results are in favor of the deconfinement scenario for that phase transition. We also discuss the nature of the magnetically disordered quantum phase.

First-order Néel to columnar valence bond solid transition in a model square-lattice S=1 antiferromagnet

Julia Wildeboer, Nisheeta Desai, Jonathan D’Emidio +1 more

We study the N\'eel to fourfold columnar valence bond solid (cVBS) quantum phase transition in a sign-free $S=1$ square-lattice model. This is the same kind of transition that for $S=1/2$ has been argued to realize the prototypical deconfined critical point. Extensive numerical simulations of the square-lattice $S=1/2$ N\'eel-VBS transition have found consistency with the deconfined critical point scenario with no direct evidence for first-order behavior. In contrast to the $S=1/2$ case, in our quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the $S=1$ model, we present unambiguous evidence for a direct conventional first-order quantum phase transition. Classic signs of a first-order transition demonstrating coexistence including double-peaked histograms and switching behavior are observed. The sharp contrast from the $S=1/2$ case is remarkable; we hypothesize that this is a striking demonstration of the role of the size of the quantum spin in the phase diagram of two-dimensional lattice models.

Example of a first-order Néel to valence-bond-solid transition in two dimensions

Arnab Sen, Anders W. Sandvik

We consider the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction $J$ and an additional multispin interaction ${Q}_{3}$ on the square lattice. The ${Q}_{3}$ term consists of three bond-singlet projectors and is chosen to favor the formation of a valence-bond solid (VBS) where the valence bonds (singlet pairs) form a staggered pattern. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition from the N\'eel state to the VBS as a function of ${Q}_{3}/J$. We study the model using quantum Monte Carlo (stochastic series expansion) simulations. The N\'eel-VBS transition in this case is strongly first order in nature, in contrast to similar previously studied models with continuous transitions into columnar VBS states. The qualitatively different transitions illustrate the important role of an emerging $U(1)$ symmetry in the latter case, which is not possible in the present model due to the staggered VBS pattern (which does not allow local fluctuations necessary to rotate the local VBS order parameter).

Frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: A candidate for deconfined quantum criticality

DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL, R. F. Bishop, P. H. Y. Li +2 more

We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ${J}_{1}$--${J}_{2}$--${J}_{3}$ antiferromagnet with ${J}_{2}={J}_{3}=\ensuremath{\kappa}{J}_{1}$ on the honeycomb lattice using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $\ensuremath{\kappa}>{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$. The transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$ appears to be of first-order type, while that at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$ is continuous. Since the N\'eel and PVBC phases break different symmetries our results favor the deconfinement scenario for the transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}$.

Quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional J1−J2 model

Oleg P. Sushkov, J. Oitmaa, Zheng Weihong

We analyze the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the ${J}_{1}{\ensuremath{-}J}_{2}$ model, in two dimensions. Two quantum phase transitions in the model are already known: the second-order transition from the N\'eel state to the spin liquid state at ${(J}_{2}{/J}_{1}{)}_{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.38,$ and the first-order transition from the spin liquid state to the collinear state at ${(J}_{2}{/J}_{1}{)}_{c4}\ensuremath{\approx}0.60.$ We have found evidence for two second-order phase transitions: the transition from the spin columnar dimerized state to the state with plaquette-type modulation at ${(J}_{2}{/J}_{1}{)}_{c3}=0.50\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02,$ and the transition from the simple N\'eel state to the N\'eel state with spin columnar dimerization at ${(J}_{2}{/J}_{1}{)}_{c1}=0.34\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04.$ We also present an independent calculation of ${(J}_{2}{/J}_{1}{)}_{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.38$ using another approach.
