Electron-phonon coupling and spin-charge separation in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Abstract

We examine the single-particle excitation spectrum in the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling by performing a dynamical density matrix renormalization group calculation. The spin-charge separation is robust against the electron-phonon (EP) coupling, although both spinon and holon branches are affected by phonons. We find that this robustness is in sharp contrast to a rather strong influence of the EP coupling on quasiparticle properties in two dimensions. We discuss the implication of the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on $\mathrm{Sr}\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$.

Temperature dependence of spinon and holon excitations in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Hiroaki Matsueda, N. Bulut, Takami Tohyama +1 more

Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on one-dimensional Mott insulators, $\mathrm{Sr}\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ and ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.96}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$, we examine the single-particle spectral weight of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at half filling. We are particularly interested in the temperature dependence of the spinon and holon excitations. For this reason, we have performed the dynamical density matrix renormalization group and determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations for the single-particle spectral weight of the 1D Hubbard model. In the QMC data, the spinon and holon branches become observable at temperatures where the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop. At these temperatures, the spinon branch grows rapidly. In the light of the numerical results, we discuss the spinon and holon branches observed by the ARPES experiments on $\mathrm{Sr}\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$. These numerical results are also in agreement with the temperature dependence of the ARPES results on ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.96}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$.

Quantum lattice dynamical effects on single-particle excitations in one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators

Holger Fehske, Gerhard Wellein, Georg Hager +2 more

As a generic model describing quasi-one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators, we investigate the Holstein-Hubbard model for half-filled bands using numerical techniques. Combining Lanczos diagonalization with Chebyshev moment expansion we calculate exactly the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra, and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. While polaronic features emerge only at strong electron-phonon couplings, pronounced phonon signatures, such as multiquanta band states, can be found in the Mott insulating regime as well. In order to corroborate the Mott to Peierls transition scenario, we determine the spin- and charge-excitation gaps by a finite-size scaling analysis based on density-matrix renormalization-group calculations.

Interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model

Alberto Nocera, Mohammad Soltanieh-ha, C. A. Perroni +2 more

We calculate the spectral function of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, focusing on the regime of large local Coulomb repulsion, and away from electronic half-filling. We argue that, from weak to intermediate electron-phonon coupling, phonons interact only with the electronic charge, and not with the spin degrees of freedom. For strong electron-phonon interaction, spinon and holon bands are not discernible anymore and the system is well described by a spinless polaronic liquid. In this regime, we observe multiple peaks in the spectrum with an energy separation corresponding to the energy of the lattice vibrations (i.e., phonons). We support the numerical results by introducing a well controlled analytical approach based on Ogata-Shiba's factorized wave function, showing that the spectrum can be understood as a convolution of three contributions, originating from charge, spin, and lattice sectors. We recognize and interpret these signatures in the spectral properties and discuss the experimental implications.

Spin and charge dynamics of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

H. Benthien, Eric Jeckelmann

We investigate the dynamical spin and charge structure factors and the one-particle spectral function of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half band filling using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method. The influence of the model parameters on these frequency- and momentum-resolved dynamical correlation functions is discussed in detail for the Mott-insulating regime. We find quantitative agreement between our numerical results and experiments for the optical conductivity, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator $\mathrm{Sr}\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$.

Effect of Electron-Phonon Interaction on Optical Properties in One-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Takami Tohyama, Hiroaki Matsueda

Interplay of strong electron correlation and electron-phonon interaction is one of important issues in the physics of low dimensional correlated electron systems. In order to understand the interplay, we examine the optical properties of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, by employing the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We discuss the effect of the electron-phonon interaction on the single-particle spectral function and the optical absorption spectrum. The dynamical DMRG data are compared with experimental data of 1D copper oxide Mott insulators.

Spinon and holon excitations in one-dimensional correlated electron systems

Hiroaki Matsueda

Motivated by the recent angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on one‐dimensional Mott insulators, SrCuO2 and Na0.96V2O5, we examine the single‐particle spectral weight of the one‐dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at half‐filling and in the doped case. We are particularly interested in the temperature dependence of the spinon and holon excitations. For this reason, we have performed dynamical density matrix renormalization group and determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations for the single‐particle spectral weight of the 1D Hubbard model. These numerical results are also in agreement with the temperature dependence of the ARPES results on Na0.96V2O5. In addition, we briefly discuss the spectral weight in the doped case.
