Abstract

The gauge theory for random spin systems is extended to quantum spin glasses to derive a number of exact and/or rigorous results. The transverse Ising model and the quantum gauge glass are shown to be gauge invariant. For these models, an identity is proved that the expectation value of the gauge invariant operator in the ferromagnetic limit is equal to the one in the classical equilibrium state on the Nishimori line. As a result, a set of inequalities for the correlation function are proved, which restrict the location of the ordered phase. It is also proved that there is no long-range order in the two-dimensional quantum gauge glass in the ground state. The phase diagram for the quantum XY Mattis model is determined.

Gauge theory for quantum XYZ spin glasses

Chigak Itoi, Y Sakamoto

Abstract Nishimori’s gauge theory is extended to the quantum XYZ p-spin glass model in finite dimensions. This enables us to obtain useful correlation equalities, which show also that Duhamel correlation functions at an arbitrary temperature are bounded by those in the corresponding classical model on the Nishimori line. These bounds give that the spontaneous magnetization vanishes in any low temperature even if the model enters the Z 2 -symmetry broken spin glass phase. This theory explains well-known fact from experiments and numerical calculations that the magnetic susceptibility does not diverge in the spin glass transition. The new gauge theory together with the known phase diagram of the Edwards–Anderson model can specify the spin glass region in the coupling constant space of the quantum Heisenberg XYZ spin glass model.

Phase diagram of gauge glasses

Yukiyasu Ozeki, Hidetoshi Nishimori

The authors introduce a general class of random spin systems which are symmetric under local gauge transformations. Their model is a generalization of the usual Ising spin glass and includes the Z q , XY, and SU (2) gauge glasses. For this general class of systems, the internal energy and an upper bound on the specific heat are calculated explicitly in any dimensions on a special line in the phase diagram. Although the line intersects a phase boundary at a multicritical point, the internal energy and the bound on the specific heat are found to be written in terms of a simple function. They also show that the boundary between the ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic phases is parallel to the temperature axis in the low-temperature region of the phase diagram. This means the absence of re-entrant transitions. All these properties are derived by simple applications of gauge transformations of spin and randomness degrees of freedom.

Non-frustrated random spin systems with gauge symmetry

Yukiyasu Ozeki

We introduce a class of random spin systems without frustration, which satisfies the conditions for gauge symmetry. The method of gauge transformation provides several properties on the phase diagram of gauge symmetric models; this method is almost rigorous, while the derivation for the absence of re-entrance contains unproved assumption. In the present random models, the absence of re-entrance can be shown exactly. Furthermore, the phase diagram and the critical properties are exactly related with those in the original pure system. The present random systems correspond to the Mattis model with asymmetric bond distribution in the Ising case, and a kind of the gauge glass model in the XY case. In the case of the clock model in two dimensions, we find a new thermodynamic phase which has long-range spin-glass correlation with critical (power-decaying) ferromagnetic correlation.

Boundedness of Susceptibility in Spin Glass Transition of Transverse Field Mixed p-spin Glass Models

Chigak Itoi, Yoshinori Sakamoto

Spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena in the transverse field mixed $p$-spin glass model in finite dimensions are studied with Nishimori's gauge theory. Useful identities in the gauge theory enable us to study $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking. It is proven that ferromagnetic long-range order and spontaneous magnetization at an arbitrary temperature are bounded by those on the Nishimori line in the corresponding classical model. These bounds imply that neither ferromagnetic long-range order nor spontaneous magnetization exists in spin glass phase. It is proven also that the ferromagnetic susceptibility has an upper bound in paramagnetic and spin glass phases.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Two-Dimensional Quantum Heisenberg Mattis Model

Yoshihiko Nonomura

The two-dimensional $S=1/2$ asymmetric Heisenberg Mattis model is investigated with the exact diagonalization of finite clusters. The Néel order parameter and the spin glass order parameter can be smoothly extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit in the antiferromagnetic region, as in the pure Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The critical concentration of the Néel phase is consistent with that of the two-dimensional Ising Mattis model, and the spin glass order parameter increases monotonously as the ferro-bond concentration increases. These facts suggest that quantum fluctuation does not play an essential role in two-dimensional non-frustrated random spin systems. Landau theory of quantum spin glasses of rotors and Ising spins

N. Read, Subir Sachdev A, J. Ye

We consider quantum rotors or Ising spins in a transverse field on a d-dimensional lattice, with random, frustrating, short-range, exchange interactions. The quantum dynamics are associated with a finite moment of inertia for the rotors, and with the transverse field for the Ising spins. For a suitable distribution of exchange constants, these models display spin-glass and quantum paramagnet phases and a zero-temperature (T) quantum transition between them. An earlier exact solution for the critical properties of a model with infinite-range interactions cna be reproduced by minimization of a Landau effective-action functional for the model in finite d with short-range interactions. The functional is expressed in terms of a composite spin field which is bilocal in time. The mean-field phase diagram near the T=0 critical point is mapped out as a function of T, strength of the quantum coupling, and applied fields. The spin-glass phase has replica symmetry breaking; but, as in the classical Ising spin glass, the order parameter becomes replica symmetric as T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0. Next we examine the consequences of fluctuations about the mean field for the critical properties. Above d=8, and with certain restrictions on the values of the Landau couplings, we find that the transition is controlled by a Gaussian fixed point with mean-field critical exponents. For couplings not attracted by the Gaussian fixed point above d=8, and for all physical couplings below d=8, we find runaway renormalization-group flows to strong coupling. General scaling relations that should be valid even at the strong-coupling fixed point are proposed and compared with Monte Carlo simulations.
