NONEQUILIBRIUM MULTICRITICAL BEHAVIOR IN ANISOTROPIC HEISENBERG FERROMAGNET DRIVEN BY OSCILLATING MAGNETIC FIELD

Abstract

The Heisenberg ferromagnet (uniaxially anisotropic along z-direction), in the presence of time dependent (but uniform over space) magnetic field, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The time dependent magnetic field was taken as elliptically polarised in such a way that the resulting field vector rotates in the XZ-plane. In the limit of low anisotropy, the dynamical responses of the system are studied as functions of temperature and the amplitudes of the magnetic field. As the temperature decreases, it was found that the system undergoes multiple dynamical phase transitions. In this limit, the multiple transitions were studied in details and the phase diagram for this observed multicritical behavior was drawn in field amplitude and temperature plane. The natures (continuous/discontinuous) of the transitions are determined by the temperature variations of fourth-order Binder cumulant ratio and the distributions of order parameters near the transition points. The transitions are supported by finite size study. The temperature variations of the variances of dynamic order parameter components (for different system sizes) indicate the existence of diverging length scale near the dynamic transition points. The frequency dependences of the transition temperatures of the multiple dynamic transition are also studied briefly.

Multiple dynamic transitions in an anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet driven by polarized magnetic field

Muktish Acharyya

A uniaxially (along the Z axis) anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet, in the presence of time-dependent (but uniform over space) magnetic field, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The time-dependent magnetic field was taken as elliptically polarized where the resultant field vector rotates in the X-Z plane. The system is cooled (in the presence of the elliptically polarized magnetic field) from high temperature. As the temperature decreases, it was found that in the low anisotropy limit the system undergoes three successive dynamical phase transitions. These three dynamic transitions were confirmed by studying the temperature variation of dynamic "specific heat." The temperature variation of dynamic specific heat shows three peaks indicating three dynamic transition points.

AXIAL AND OFF-AXIAL DYNAMIC TRANSITIONS IN UNIAXIALLY ANISOTROPIC HEISENBERG FERROMAGNET: A COMPARISON

Muktish Acharyya

Uniaxially anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet, in the presence of a magnetic field varying sinusoidally in time, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The axial (field applied only along the direction of anisotropy) and off-axial (field applied only along the direction which is perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy) dynamic transitions are studied. By studying the distribution of the dynamic order parameter component, it is observed that the axial transition is discontinuous for low anisotropy and becomes continuous in high anisotropy. The off-axial transition is found to be continuous for all values of anisotropy. In the infinite anisotropy limit, both types of transitions are compared with that observed in an Ising ferromagnet for the same value of the field and frequency. The infinitely anisotropic axial transition and dynamic transition in the Ising ferromagnet occur at different temperatures, whereas the infinitely anisotropic off-axial transition and the equilibrium ferro-para transition in the Ising model occur at the same temperature.

Nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition of 3D kinetic Ising/Heisenberg spin system

Shao Yuan-Zhi, J.K.L. Lai, C.H. Shek +2 more

We have studied the nonequilibrium dynamic phase transitions of both three-dimensional (3D) kinetic Ising and Heisenberg spin systems in the presence of a perturbative magnetic field by Monte Carlo simulation. The feature of the phase transition is characterized by studying the distribution of the dynamical order parameter. In the case of anisotropic Ising spin system (ISS), the dynamic transition is discontinuous and continuous under low and high temperatures respectively, which indicates the existence of a tri-critical point (TCP) on the phase \linebreak boundary separating low-temperature order phase and high-temperature disorder phase. The TCP shifts towards the higher temperature region with the decrease of frequency, i.e. T TCP =1.33 × exp(−ω/30.7). In the case of the isotropic Heisenberg spin system (HSS), however, the situation on dynamic phase transition of HSS is quite different from that of ISS in that no stable dynamical phase transition was observed in kinetic HSS after a threshold time. The evolution of magnetization in the HSS driven by a symmetrical external field after a certain duration always tends asymptotically to a disorder state no matter what an initial state the system starts with. The threshold time τ depends upon the amplitude H 0 , reduced temperature T / T C and the frequency ω as τ = C .ω α . H 0 −β .( T / T C ) −γ .

Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Spin- S Ising Ferromagnet Driven by Propagating and Standing Magnetic Field Wave

Ajay Halder, Muktish Acharyya

Abstract The dynamical response of spin-S (S=1, 3/2, 2, 3) Ising ferromagnet to the plane propagating wave, standing magnetic field wave and uniformly oscillating field with constant frequency are studied separately in two dimensions by extensive Monte Carlo simulation. Depending upon the strength of the magnetic field and the value of the spin state of the Ising spin lattice two different dynamical phases are observed. For a fixed value of S and the amplitude of the propagating magnetic field wave the system undergoes a dynamical phase transition from propagating phase to pinned phase as the temperature of the system is cooled down. Similarly in case with standing magnetic wave the system undergoes dynamical phase transition from high temperature phase where spins oscillate coherently in alternate bands of half wavelength of the standing magnetic wave to the low temperature pinned or spin frozen phase. For a fixed value of the amplitude of magnetic field oscillation the transition temperature is observed to decrease to a limiting value as the value of spin S is increased. The time averaged magnetisation over a full cycle of the magnetic field oscillation plays the role of the dynamic order parameter. A comprehensive phase boundary is drawn in the plane of magnetic field amplitude and dynamic transition temperature. It is found that the phase boundary shrinks inwards for high value of spin state S. Also in the low temperature (and high field) region the phase boundaries are closely spaced.

Non-equilibrium phase transition in the kinetic Ising model driven by a propagating magnetic field wave

Muktish Acharyya

The two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the presence of a propagating magnetic field wave (with a well-defined frequency and wavelength) was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. This study differs from similar earlier studies, because in earlier studies the oscillating magnetic field was considered to be uniform in space. The time averaged magnetization over a full cycle (the time period) of the propagating magnetic field acted as the dynamic order parameter. The dynamical phase transition was observed. The temperature variation of the dynamic order parameter, the mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter, the dynamic specific heat and the derivative of the dynamic order parameter were studied. The mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter and the dynamic specific heat show sharp maxima near the transition point. The derivative of the dynamic order parameter shows a sharp minimum near the transition point. The transition temperature is found to depend also on the speed of propagation of the magnetic field wave.
