Abstract

We investigate collective excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates at absolute zero in a double-well trap. We solve the Bogoliubov equations with a double-well trap, and show that the crossover from the dipole mode to the Josephson plasma mode occurs in the lowest energy excitation. It is found that the anomalous tunneling property of low energy excitations is crucial to the crossover.

Elementary Excitations of Condensates in Double-Well Traps

We investigate collective excitations of Bose‐Einstein condensates in double‐well traps. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov‐de Gennes equations with a double‐well trap and show that a crossover from the dipole mode to the Josephson plasma oscillation occurs in the lowest excitation. It is found that the anomalous tunneling property of the low energy excitations dominates the crossover.

Coherent tunneling of collective excitation of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Wang, Haoyu, Zhang, Ming +1 more

The Josephson effect can be observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, which is attributed to the tunneling of bosons between two wells. We propose a multi-mode theory to investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a one-dimensional condensate in a double-well potential. We show that the system can be described by two independent two-mode models. The Josephson oscillation and the self-trapping of local collective excitations are predicted analytically and confirmed by numerical simulation.

Bogoliubov excitations of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in a BCS-BEC crossover beyond the Thomas-Fermi limit

Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We study the Bogoliubov collective excitations of harmonically trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) beyond Thomas-Fermi (TF) limit. Starting from a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation and an equation of state valid for the whole crossover, we derive Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations for low-lying collective modes at zero temperature. We use a Fetter-like variational ground state wave function to remove the noncontinuity of slope at the boundary of condensate, which appears in the TF limit. We solve the BdG equations analytically and obtain explicit expressions for all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, valid for various crossover regimes and for traps with spherical and axial symmetries. We discuss the feature of these collective excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover and show that the theoretical result obtained agrees with available experimental data near and beyond the TF limit.

Collective modes of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates in a Josephson junction barrier

Harsimranjit Kaur, Kuldeep Suthar

Abstract The ultracold atoms are an ideal platform to implement atomtronics and Josephson junctions analogous to superconducting circuits. The collective modes of a Bose gas split by a potential barrier have been known. However, the role of barriers on the collective excitation spectra of ultracold atomic mixtures has not been examined. Here, we examine the low-lying collective modes of (an)harmonically trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in a Josephson barrier by employing the variational approach and Bogoliubov theory. We first show that the anharmonicity of the external potential leads to an increase in the critical barrier strength of mode softening in a single-species condensate. The Josephson barrier drives the softening of in-phase and out-of-phase dipole modes of two-species BECs, and consequently leads to two additional zero-energy Goldstone modes in the miscible phase, in agreement with the variational approach. Furthermore, the sandwich immiscible state results in an additional Goldstone mode due to the barrier, in contrast to the spatially symmetry-broken side-by-side profile. Our results unveil the distinct collective response of the Josephson barrier in binary mixtures owing to interspecies atomic correlations.

COLLECTIVE EXCITATIONS OF A BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE TRAPPED IN A TWO-CHANNEL POTENTIAL

Nguyen Viet Hung

In this paper, we investigate the collective excitations of an attractively interacting Bose–Einstein condensate confined in a two-channel potential. Using the Bogoliubov approximation, we derive the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations and determine the excitation spectrum numerically. Two distinct modes are identified: the well-known Josephson mode, associated with periodic inter-channel tunneling, and a novel antisymmetric translational mode, describing out-of-phase oscillations of the condensate center of mass. Unlike conventional dipole oscillations, the latter arises from the interplay between inter-channel coupling and attractive nonlinearity and does not follow the Kohn theorem. We then employ the variational approximation to describe the condensate dynamics under these excitations and to extract the corresponding mode frequencies. The results are further validated by real-time simulations of the governing Gross–Pitaevskii equations, showing good agreement between analytical and numerical approaches.

Bose condensate in a double-well trap: Ground state and elementary excitations

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We study the Bose-Einstein condensate in the MIT double-well trap. We calculate the ground-state density profile of ${}^{23}$Na atoms and the Bogoliubov spectrum of the elementary excitations as a function of the strength of the double-well barrier. In particular, we analyze the behavior of quantum-mechanical collective excitations. Finally, we discuss the observability criteria for macroscopic quantum tunneling and macroscopic quantum self-trapping.
