Abstract

We numerically evaluate the density distribution of a spin-1 bosonic condensate in its ground state within a modified Gross-Pitaevskii theory, which is obtained by the combination of the exact solution of the corresponding integrable model with the local-density approximation. Our study reveals that atoms in the ${m}_{F}=0$ state are almost completely suppressed for the antiferromagnetic interactions in both weakly and strongly interacting regimes, whereas all three components remain nonvanishing for ferromagnetic interactions. In particular, when the system is in the Tonks-Girardeau regime, obvious Fermi-like distribution emerges for each component. We also discuss the possible deviation of the spatial distribution from the Fermi-like distribution when the spin-spin interaction is strong enough.

Analytic models for the density of a ground-state spinor condensate

Sandeep Gautam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

We demonstrate that the ground state of a trapped spin-1 and spin-2 spinor ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) can be well approximated by a single decoupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Useful analytic models for the ground-state densities of ferromagnetic BECs are obtained from the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) to this decoupled equation. Similarly, for the ground states of spin-1 antiferromagnetic and spin-2 antiferromagnetic and cyclic BECs, some of the spin-component densities are zero, which reduces the coupled GP equation to a simple reduced form. Analytic models for ground-state densities are also obtained for antiferromagnetic and cyclic BECs from the TFA to the respective reduced GP equations. The analytic densities are illustrated and compared with the full numerical solution of the GP equation with realistic experimental parameters.

Density-functional theory for the spin-1 bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Hongmei Wang, Yunbo Zhang

We propose the density-functional theory for one-dimensional harmonically trapped spin-1 bosons in the ground state with repulsive density-density interaction and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction. The density distributions of spin-singlet-paired bosons and polarized bosons with different total polarization for various interaction parameters are obtained by solving the Kohn-Sham equations, which are derived based on the local density approximation and the Bethe ansatz exact results for a homogeneous system. Nonmonotonicity of the central densities is attributed to the competition between the density interaction and spin-exchange. The results reveal the phase separation of the paired and polarized bosons, the density profiles of which respectively approach the Tonks-Girardeau gases of Bose-Bose pairs and scalar bosons in the case of strong interaction. We give the radius-polarization phase diagram at strong interaction and find the critical polarization, which paves the way to directly observe the exotic singlet pairing in spinor gas experimentally.

Density-functional theory of two-component Bose gases in one-dimensional harmonic traps

Yajiang Hao, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of two-component Bose gases confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps in the scheme of density-functional theory. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for the correlation effect properly from the weakly interacting regime to the strongly interacting regime. For the binary Bose mixture with spin-independent interaction, the homogeneous reference system is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method. Within the local-density approximation, we determine the density distribution of each component and study its evolution from Bose distributions to Fermi-like distribution with the increase in interaction. For the binary mixture of Tonks-Girardeau gases with a tunable interspecies repulsion, with a generalized Bose-Fermi transformation we show that the Bose mixture can be mapped into a two-component Fermi gas, which corresponds to exact soluble Yang-Gaudin model for the homogeneous system. Based on the ground-state energy function of the Yang-Gaudin model, the ground-state density distributions are calculated for various interspecies interactions. It is shown that with the increase in interspecies interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.

Expansion of one-dimensional spinor gases from power-law traps

Ovidiu I. Pâţu, Gianni Aupetit-Diallo

Free expansion following the removal of axial confinement represents a fundamental nonequilibrium scenario in the study of many-body ultracold gases. Using the stationary phase approximation, we analytically demonstrate that for all one-dimensional spinor gases with repulsive contact interactions, whether bosonic or fermionic, the asymptotic density and momentum distribution can be directly determined from the quasimomentum distribution (Bethe rapidities) of the trapped gas. We efficiently obtain the quasimomentum distribution numerically by solving the integral equations that characterize the ground state of the integrable system within the local density approximation. Additionally, we derive analytical solutions for both weakly and strongly interacting regimes. Unlike in bosonic gases, where rapidity distributions and density profiles vary significantly across interaction regimes, fermionic gases maintain similar profiles in both weakly and strongly interacting limits. Notably, the gas expands self-similarly only when released from a harmonic trap. For other power-law trapping potentials, the asymptotic density profile is strongly influenced by the initial confinement geometry. Our results extend readily to Bose-Fermi mixtures and finite temperatures.

Spin-chain model for strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

F. Deuretzbacher, D. Becker, J. Bjerlin +2 more

Strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose--Fermi mixtures form a tunable $XXZ$ spin chain. Within the spin-chain model developed here, all properties of these systems can be calculated from states representing the ordering of the bosons and fermions within the atom chain and from the ground-state wave function of spinless noninteracting fermions. We validate the model by means of an exact diagonalization of the full few-body Hamiltonian in the strongly interacting regime. Using the model, we explore the phase diagram of the atom chain as a function of the boson-boson (BB) and boson-fermion (BF) interaction strengths and calculate the densities, momentum distributions, and trap-level occupancies for up to 17 particles. In particular, we find antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) order and a demixing of the bosons and fermions in certain interaction regimes. We find, however, no demixing for equally strong BB and BF interactions, in agreement with earlier calculations that combined the Bethe ansatz with a local-density approximation.

Dynamical Fermionization in One-Dimensional Spinor Quantum Gases

Shah Saad Alam, Timothy Skaras, Li Yang +1 more

Dynamical fermionization refers to the phenomenon in Tonks-Girardeau gases where, upon release from harmonic confinement, the gases' momentum density profile evolves asymptotically to that of an ideal Fermi gas in the initial trap. This phenomenon has been demonstrated theoretically in hardcore and anyonic Tonks-Girardeau gases and was recently experimentally observed in a strongly interacting Bose gas. We extend this study to a one-dimensional spinor gas of arbitrary spin in the strongly interacting regime and analytically prove that the total momentum distribution after the harmonic trap is turned off approaches that of a spinless ideal Fermi gas, while the asymptotic momentum distribution of each spin component takes the same shape of the initial real space density profile of that spin component. Our work demonstrates the rich physics arising from the interplay between the spin and the charge degrees of freedom in a spinor system.
