Abstract

The leading corrections to finite-size scaling relations for the correlation length and twist order parameter of three mixed-spin quantum spin chains for the critical feature that develops at ϑ = π, corresponding to a change in the topological realization of the ground states, are identified.

Matrix product states for critical spin chains: Finite-size versus finite-entanglement scaling

B. Pirvu, Guifré Vidal, Frank Verstraete +1 more

We investigate the use of matrix product states (MPS) to approximate ground states of critical quantum spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We identify two regimes in the $(N,D)$ parameter plane, where $N$ is the size of the spin chain and $D$ is the dimension of the MPS matrices. In the first regime, MPS can be used to perform finite size scaling (FSS). In the complementary regime, the MPS simulations show instead the clear signature of finite entanglement scaling (FES). In the thermodynamic limit (or large $N$ limit), only MPS in the FSS regime maintain a finite overlap with the exact ground state. This observation has implications on how to correctly perform FSS with MPS as well as on the performance of recent MPS algorithms for systems with PBC. It also gives clear evidence that critical models can actually be simulated very well with MPS by using the right scaling relations; in the appendixes, we give an alternative derivation of the result of Pollmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 255701 (2009)] relating the bond dimension of the MPS to an effective correlation length.

Kosterlitz–Thouless and topological Gaussian criticalities in a mixed-spin Heisenberg model with modulated single-ion anisotropy

The interplay between competing interactions in low-dimensional quantum many-body systems gives rise to a wide variety of quantum phases and critical phenomena. Motivated by this scenario, we investigate the quantum phase diagram of the mixed-spin 1 2 , 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with modulated single-ion anisotropy by means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The resulting phase diagram comprises four distinct quantum phases: three gapped phases, namely the 1 / 3 magnetization plateau, the trivial nonmagnetic (TnM) phase, and the topological valence-bond-solid (TVBS) phase, together with a gapless Luttinger liquid (LL) phase. The different phases are characterized through the analysis of magnetization, spin correlation functions, nonlocal order parameters, and entanglement-based observables. The TVBS phase is identified by the presence of exponentially localized edge states, finite values of the nonlocal string order parameter and twist operator, and the characteristic degeneracy pattern of the entanglement spectrum. The boundaries of the LL phase are determined from the transverse spin correlation function and the corresponding Luttinger parameter, revealing two Kosterlitz–Thouless transition lines characterized by the critical value K c = 2.0 , in agreement with finite-size scaling analyses of the spin gap. In addition, we identify a Gaussian critical line associated with the topological quantum phase transition separating the TVBS and TnM phases. By employing the tangential finite-size scaling approach, we accurately determine this critical line by extracting the correlation-length critical exponent ν and the conformal field theory central charge c . Our results demonstrate that the competition between exchange interactions and modulated single-ion anisotropy gives rise to a rich interplay between topology, quantum criticality, and magnetic ordering, highlighting the fundamental role of these interactions in determining the ground-state properties of low-dimensional quantum spin systems.

Fidelity susceptibility of one-dimensional models with twisted boundary conditions

Diptiman Sen, Manisha Thakurathi, Amit Dutta

Recently it has been shown that the fidelity of the ground state of a quantum many-body system can be used to detect its quantum critical points (QCPs). If g denotes the parameter in the Hamiltonian with respect to which the fidelity is computed, we find that for one-dimensional models with large but finite size, the fidelity susceptibility χF can detect a QCP provided that the correlation length exponent satisfies ν< 2. We then show that χF can be used to locate a QCP even if ν 2 if we introduce boundary conditions labeled by a twist angle Nθ ,w hereN is the system size. If the QCP lies at g = 0, we find that if N is kept constant, χF has a scaling form given by χF ∼ θ −2/ν f(g/θ 1/ν )i fθ 2π/N. We illustrate this both in a tight-binding model of fermions with a spatially varying chemical potential with amplitude h and period 2q in which ν = q, and in a XY spin-1/2 chain in which ν = 2. Finally we show that when q is very large, the model has two additional QCPs at h =± 2 which cannot be detected by studying the energy spectrum but are clearly detected by χF. The peak value and width of χF seem to scale as nontrivial powers of q at these QCPs. We argue that these QCPs mark a transition between extended and localized states at the Fermi energy.
