Dressed-state approach to matter-wave mixing of bosons

Abstract

A dressed-state approach to mixing of bosonic matter waves is presented. Two cases are studied using this formalism. In the first, two macroscopically populated modes of atoms (two-wave mixing) are coupled through the presence of light. In the second case, three modes of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (three-wave mixing) are coupled through $s$-wave interaction. In both cases, wave mixing induces oscillations in the population of the different modes that decay due to interactions. Analytic expressions for the dressed basis spectrum and the evolution of the mode populations in time are derived both for resonant mixing and nonresonant mixing. Oscillations in the population of a given mode are shown to lead to a splitting in the decay spectrum of that mode, in analogy with the optical Autler-Townes splitting in the decay spectrum of a strongly driven atom. These effects cannot be described by a mean-field approximation.

Three-Wave Mixing of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Roee Ozeri, Nadav Y. Katz, Jeff Steinhauer +2 more

A dressed basis is used to calculate the dynamics of three-wave mixing between Bogoliubov quasiparticles in a Bose condensate. Because of the observed oscillations between different momentum modes, an energy splitting, analogous to the optical Mollow triplet, appears in the Beliaev damping spectrum of the excitations from the oscillating modes.

Inelastic collisions between Bogoliubov excitations due to three-wave mixing

Roee Ozeri, Nadav Y. Katz, J. Steihhauer +3 more

This study introduces a basis of states which are dressed by the interaction between three, largely populated, modes of Bogoliubov quasi-particles in a Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. The dressed basis is obtained by diagonalizing the N/spl times/M matrix, which represents the coupling between mode k with N excitations and mode q with M excitations. The degeneracy between the excitation Fock states is removed by the interaction. The new dressed basis spans a spectrum of energies which is symmetric around E=0. The spectrum appears to be roughly linear, however, due to the non-linearity of the problem, energy differences between each pair of dressed states are slightly different.

Dressed multi-wave mixing in a V-type four-level atomic system

Tong Jiang, Zhang Yan-Peng, Nie Zhi-Qiang +8 more

The dressed four- and six-wave mixings in a V-type four-level system are considered. Under two different dressed conditions, two- and three-photon resonant Autler–Townes splittings, accompanied by enhancement and suppression of wave mixing signal, are obtained analytically. Meanwhile, an electromagnetic induced transparency of multi-wave mixing is presented, which shows multiple peaks and asymmetric effects caused by one-photon, two-photon and three-photon resonances, separately. The slow light propagation multiple region of multi-wave mixing signal is also obtained.

Two-photon resonant four-wave mixing in a dressed atomic system

Sun Jiang, Zhanchun Zuo, Xin Mi +5 more

We study two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) in a dressed cascade four-level system. In the presence of a strong coupling field, the two-photon resonant NFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, accompanied by either suppression or enhancement of the NFWM signal. Such phenomena are demonstrated in Ba through inducing of atomic coherence between the ground state $6{s}^{2}$ and the doubly excited autoionizing Rydberg state $6pnd$. This technique provides a spectroscopic tool for measuring not only the resonant frequency and dephasing rate but also the transition dipole moment between two highly excited atomic states.

Nonlinear mixing of Bogoliubov modes in a bosonic Josephson junction

S. Martínez-Garaot, Giulio Pettini, Michele Modugno

We revisit the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, from the regime of Josephson plasma oscillations to the self-trapping regime, by means of the Bogoliubov quasiparticle projection method. For a very small imbalance between the left and right wells only the lowest Bogoliubov mode is significantly occupied. In this regime the system performs plasma oscillations at the corresponding frequency, and the evolution of the condensate is characterized by a periodic transfer of population between the ground and the first excited state. As the initial imbalance is increased, more excited modes---though initially not macroscopically occupied---get coupled during the evolution of the system. Since their population also varies with time, the frequency spectrum of the imbalance turns out to be still peaked around a single frequency, which is continuously shifted towards lower values. The nonlinear mixing between Bogoliubov modes eventually drives the system into the the self-trapping regime, when the population of the ground state can be transferred completely to the excited states at some time during the evolution. For simplicity, here we consider a one-dimensional setup, but the results are expected to hold also in higher dimensions.

Effects of Doppler broadening on Autler-Townes splitting in six-wave mixing

Jinyan Niu, Li-Ya Pei, Xiaogang Lu +3 more

The effects of Doppler broadening on Autler-Townes (AT) splitting in six-wave mixing (SWM) are investigated by the dressed-state model. We analyze the velocities at which the atoms are in resonance with the dressed states through Doppler frequency shifting and find that, depending on the wave-number ratio, there may be two resonant velocities which can originate from resonance with one of the dressed states or from resonance with two different dressed states. Based on this model, we discuss a novel type of AT doublet in the SWM spectrum, where macroscopic effects play an important role. Specifically, the existence of resonant peaks requires polarization interference between atoms of different velocities in addition to a change in the number of resonant atoms involved. Our model can also be employed to analyze electromagnetically induced transparency resonance and other types of Doppler-free high-resolution AT spectroscopy.
