Equation of state of a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Abstract

We present a theory for a superfluid Fermi gas near the BCS-BEC crossover, including pairing fluctuation contributions to the free energy similar to that considered by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink for the normal phase. In the strong coupling limit, our theory is able to recover the Bogoliubov theory of a weakly interacting Bose gas with a molecular scattering length very close to the known exact result. We compare our results with recent Quantum Monte Carlo simulations both for the ground state and at finite temperature. Excellent agreement is found for all interaction strengths where simulation results are available.

Quantum fluctuations in the BCS-BEC crossover of two-dimensional Fermi gases

Lianyi He, Hai‐Feng Lü, Gaoqing Cao +2 more

We present a theoretical study of the ground state of the BCS-BEC crossover in dilute two-dimensional Fermi gases. While the mean-field theory provides a simple and analytical equation of state, the pressure is equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the entire BCS-BEC crossover, which is not consistent with the features of a weakly interacting Bose condensate in the BEC limit and a weakly interacting Fermi liquid in the BCS limit. The inadequacy of the two-dimensional mean-field theory indicates that the quantum fluctuations are much more pronounced than those in three dimensions. In this work, we show that the inclusion of the Gaussian quantum fluctuations naturally recovers the above features in both the BEC and the BCS limits. In the BEC limit, the missing logarithmic dependence on the boson chemical potential is recovered by the quantum fluctuations. Near the quantum phase transition from the vacuum to the BEC phase, we compare our equation of state with the known grand canonical equation of state of two-dimensional Bose gases and determine the ratio of the composite boson scattering length ${a}_{B}$ to the fermion scattering length ${a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$. We find ${a}_{B}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.56{a}_{2\mathrm{D}}$, in good agreement with the exact four-body calculation. We compare our equation of state in the BCS-BEC crossover with recent results from the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements and find good agreements.

BCS-BEC Crossover in a Gas of Fermi Atoms with a Feshbach Resonance

Yoji Ohashi, Adam Griffin

We discuss the BCS-BEC crossover in a degenerate Fermi gas of two hyperfine states interacting close to a Feshbach resonance. We show that, by including fluctuation contributions to the free energy similar to that considered by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, the character of the superfluid phase transition continuously changes from the BCS-type to the BEC-type, as the threshold of the quasimolecular band is lowered. In the BEC regime, the superfluid phase transition is interpreted in terms of molecules associated with both the Feshbach resonance and Cooper pairing.

Specific heat and effects of strong pairing fluctuations in a superfluid Fermi atom gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region

Pieter van Wyk, Daisuke Inotani, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate the specific heat at constant volume C V in the BCS(Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC(Bose-Einstein-condensation)-crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas, below the superfluid phase transition temperature T c . Within the strong-coupling framework developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, we show that the temperature dependence of C V drastically changes as one passes through the crossover region, and is sensitive to strong fluctuations in the Cooper channel near the unitarity limit. We also compare our results to a recent experiment on a 6 Li unitary Fermi gas. Since fluctuation effects are a crucial key in the BCS-BEC-crossover phenomenon, our results would be helpful in considering how the fermionic BCS superfluid changes into BEC with increasing the interaction strength, from the viewpoint of specific heat.

Pairing fluctuations and the superfluid density through the BCS-BEC crossover

Edward Taylor, Adam Griffin, N. Fukushima +1 more

We derive an expression for the superfluid density of a uniform two-component Fermi gas through the BCS-BEC crossover in terms of the thermodynamic potential in the presence of an imposed superfluid flow. Treating the pairing fluctuations in a Gaussian approximation following the approach of Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink, we use this definition of ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$ to obtain an explicit result which is valid at finite temperatures and over the full BCS-BEC crossover. It is crucial that the BCS gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, the chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$, and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$ all include the effect of fluctuations at the same level in a self-consistent manner. We show that the normal fluid density ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{n}\ensuremath{\equiv}n\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$ naturally separates into a sum of contributions from Fermi BCS quasiparticles $({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{n}^{F})$ and Bose collective modes $({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{n}^{B})$. The expression for ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{n}^{F}$ is just Landau's formula for a BCS Fermi superfluid but now calculated over the BCS-BEC crossover. The expression for the Bose contribution ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{n}^{B}$ is more complicated and only reduces to Landau's formula for a Bose superfluid in the extreme BEC limit, where all the fermions have formed stable Bose pairs and the Bogoliubov excitations of the associated molecular Bose condensate are undamped. In a companion paper, we present numerical calculations of ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$ using an expression equivalent to the one derived in this paper, over the BCS-BEC crossover, including unitarity, and at finite temperatures.

Beyond Gaussian pair fluctuation theory for strongly interacting Fermi gases II: the broken-symmetry phase

Brendan C. Mulkerin, Xing-Can Yao, Yoji Ohashi +2 more

We theoretically study the thermodynamic properties of a strongly interacting Fermi gas at the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), by applying a recently outlined strong-coupling theory that includes pair fluctuations beyond the commonly-used many-body $$T$$ -matrix or ladder approximation at the Gaussian level. The beyond Gaussian pair fluctuation (GPF) theory always respects the exact thermodynamic relations and recovers the Bogoliubov theory of molecules in the BEC limit with a nearly correct molecule-molecule scattering length. We show that the beyond-GPF theory predicts quantitatively accurate ground-state properties at the BEC-BCS crossover, in good agreement with the recent measurement by Horikoshi et al. in Phys. Rev. X 7, 041004 (2017). In the unitary limit with infinitely large $$s$$ -wave scattering length, the beyond-GPF theory predicts a reliable universal energy equation of state up to 0.6 $$T_c$$ , where $$T_c$$ is the superfluid transition temperature at unitarity. The theory predicts a Bertsch parameter $$\xi \simeq 0.365$$ at zero temperature, in good agreement with the latest quantum Monte Carlo result $$\xi = 0.367(7)$$ and the latest experimental measurement $$\xi = 0.367(9)$$ . We attribute the excellent and wide applicability of the beyond-GPF theory in the broken-symmetry phase at sufficiently low temperatures to the empirically useful partial re-summation of Feynman diagrams following a dimensional $$\epsilon$$ -expansion analysis near four dimensions ( $$d=4-\epsilon$$ ), which gives rise to accurate predictions at the second order $$\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^2)$$ . Our work indicates the possibility of further improving the strong-coupling theory of strongly interacting fermions based on the systematic inclusion of large-loop Feynman diagrams at higher orders $$\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^n)$$ with $$n\ge 3$$ .
