Parametric Amplification of Matter Waves in Periodically Translated Optical Lattices

Abstract

We observe the sudden growth of small classes of Bloch waves from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates held in periodically translated optical lattices. The effect is explained by narrowband parametric amplification of Bloch waves from noise, due to phase-matched scattering of atom pairs out of the condensate. Amplification occurs above a well-defined modulation threshold, described by dynamic shaping of single-particle band structure.

Parametric Amplification of Scattered Atom Pairs

We have observed parametric generation and amplification of ultracold atom pairs. A $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ Bose-Einstein condensate was loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice with quasimomentum ${k}_{0}$ and spontaneously scattered into two final states with quasimomenta ${k}_{1}$ and ${k}_{2}$. Furthermore, when a seed of atoms was first created with quasimomentum ${k}_{1}$ we observed parametric amplification of scattered atoms pairs in states ${k}_{1}$ and ${k}_{2}$ when the phase-matching condition was fulfilled. This process is analogous to optical parametric generation and amplification of photons and could be used to efficiently create entangled pairs of atoms. Furthermore, these results explain the dynamic instability of condensates in moving lattices observed in recent experiments.

Parametric Amplification of Atoms

We have observed parametric generation and amplification of ultracold atom pairs. A 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate was loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice with quasimomentum k0 and spontaneously scattered into two final states with quasimomenta k1 and k2 . Furthermore, when a seed of atoms was first created with quasimomentum k1 we observed parametric amplification of scattered atoms pairs in states k1 and k2 when the phase-matching condition was fulfilled. This process is analogous to optical parametric generation (OPG) and amplification (OPA) of photons and could be used to efficiently create entangled pairs of atoms. Furthermore, these results explain the dynamic instability of condensates in moving lattices observed in recent experiments.

Quantum effects in the dynamical localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Beata J. Dąbrowska-Wüster, Sebastian Wüster, Ashton S. Bradley +2 more

We study quantum effects in the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded onto the edge of a Brillouin zone of a one-dimensional periodic potential created by an optical lattice. We show that quantum fluctuations trigger the dynamical instability of the Bloch states of the condensate and can lead to the generation of arrays of matter-wave gap solitons. Our approach also allows us to study the instability-induced anomalous heating of the condensate at the edge of the Brillouin zone and growth of the uncondensed atomic fraction. We demonstrate that there are regimes in which the heating effects do not suppress the formation of the localised states. We show that a phase imprinting technique can ensure the formation of gap soliton trains after short evolution times and at fixed positions.

Instabilities of a matter wave in a matter grating

Giovanni Barontini, Michele Modugno

We investigate the stability of Bloch waves for a Bose-Einstein condensate moving through a periodic lattice which is created by another condensate modulated by an optical lattice. We show that the coupling of phonon-antiphonon modes of the two species gives rise to a very rich structure of the regimes for dynamical instability, with significant differences with respect to the case of a single condensate in an optical lattice. We characterize the relative weight of each condensate in the mixing and discuss an analytic limit that accounts for the bare structure of the instability diagrams.

Bloch waves and bloch bands of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Biao Wu, Roberto B. Diener, Qian Niu

Bloch waves and Bloch bands of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices are studied. We provide further evidence for the loop structure in the Bloch band, and compute the critical values of the mean-field interaction strength for the Landau instability and the dynamical instability.
