A novel mm-scale Ioffe-Pritchard trap is used to achieve Bose-Einstein condensation in 7Li. The trap employs free-standing copper coils integrated onto a direct-bond copper surface electrode structure. The trap achieves a radial magnetic gradient of 420 G/cm, an axial oscillation frequency of 50 Hz and a trap depth of 66 G with a 100 A drive current and 7 W total power dissipation.

Bose-Einstein condensation in a loffe-Pritchard trap

U. Ernst, Andreas Marte, Florian Schreck +2 more

Since its first observation in 1995,1 Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experiments in dilute gases have been performed with only a few different kinds of magnetic traps. In addition, the effect of the confining potential on, e.g., the condensation process,2 has not been investigated experimentally. We have performed a BEC experiment with 87Rb atoms in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic potential,3 which opens up the possibility to study, e.g., Bose–Einstein condensates released in only one dimension.

A gradient and offset compensated Ioffe–Pritchard trap for Bose–Einstein condensation experiments

The Ioffe–Pritchard trap is the workhorse of modern cold atom physics. Here, we present a novel Ioffe–Pritchard trap coil configuration based purely on circular coils. By eliminating the traditional Ioffe bars one can increase the gradient and thus the radial trapping frequency by almost a factor 2. We also present a method to achieve minimal coupling between the gradient, curvature and offset fields of the trap, thus facilitating the dynamic control of the trapping frequencies and aspect ratio.
