Abstract

In this work we compare the results of the Gross-Pitaevskii and modified Gross-Pitaevskii equations with ab initio variational Monte Carlo calculations for Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms in axially symmetric traps. We examine both the ground state and excited states having a vortex line along the $z$ axis at high values of the gas parameter and demonstrate an excellent agreement between the modified Gross-Pitaevskii and ab initio Monte Carlo methods, both for the ground and vortex states.

Properties of trapped Bose gas with vortices in large-gas-parameter regime

Arup Banerjee, Manoranjan P. Singh

We study the properties of vortex states of a trapped Bose gas in the large-gas-parameter regime. To test the validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory in this regime for vortex states, we compare the results of the Gross-Pitaevskii and the modified Gross-Pitaevskii calculations for the total energy, chemical potential, density profile, and frequency shift of the quadrupole modes of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped condensate carrying a single quantized vortex. We find that in the large-gas-parameter regime, two calculations give substantially different results for all the properties mentioned above.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates with dominant dipolar interactions

Marta Abad, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +2 more

We present full three-dimensional numerical calculations of single vortex states in rotating dipolar condensates. We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}\text{C}\text{r}$ atoms with dipole-dipole and $s$-wave contact interactions confined in an axially symmetric harmonic trap. We obtain the vortex states by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the rotating frame with no further approximations. We investigate the properties of a single vortex and calculate the critical angular velocity for different values of the $s$-wave scattering length. We show that, whereas the standard variational approach breaks down in the limit of pure dipolar interactions, exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can be obtained for values of the $s$-wave scattering length down to zero. The energy barrier for the nucleation of a vortex is calculated as a function of the vortex displacement from the rotation axis for different values of the angular velocity of the rotating trap.

Bosons in anisotropic traps: Ground state and vortices

F. Dalfovo, S. Stringari

We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a dilute atomic gas in a magnetic trap, modeled by an anisotropic harmonic potential. We evaluate the wave function and the energy of the Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of the particle number, both for positive and negative scattering length. The results for the transverse and the vertical size of the cloud of atoms, as well as for the kinetic and potential energy per particle, are compared with the predictions of approximated models. We also compare the aspect ratio of the velocity distribution with experimental estimates available for $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. Vortex states are considered and the critical angular velocity for production of vortices is calculated. We show that the presence of vortices significantly increases the stability of the condensate in the case of attractive interactions. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Generating vortex rings in Bose-Einstein condensates in the line-source approximation

M. Guilleumas, Dora M. Jezek, R. Mayol +2 more

We present a numerical method for generating vortex rings in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in axially symmetric traps. The vortex ring is generated using the line-source approximation for the vorticity, i.e., the curl of the superfluid velocity field is different from zero only on a circumference of a given radius located on a plane perpendicular to the symmetry axis and coaxial with it. The particle density is obtained by solving a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation that incorporates the effect of the velocity field. We discuss the appearance of density profiles, the vortex core structure, and the vortex nucleation energy, i.e., the energy difference between vortical and ground-state configurations. This is used to present a qualitative description of the vortex dynamics.

Exploring rigidly rotating vortex configurations and their bifurcations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

A. V. Zampetaki, R. Carretero-González, P. G. Kevrekidis +2 more

In the present work, we consider the problem of a system of few vortices N ≤ 5 as it emerges from its experimental realization in the field of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the corresponding equations of motion for an axially symmetric trapped condensate, we use a two-pronged approach in order to reveal the configuration space of the system's preferred dynamical states. We use a Monte Carlo method parametrizing the vortex particles by means of hyperspherical coordinates and identifying the minimal energy ground states thereof for N=2,...,5 and different vortex particle angular momenta. We then complement this picture with a dynamical system analysis of the possible rigidly rotating states. The latter reveals a supercritical and subcritical pitchfork, as well as saddle-center bifurcations that arise, exposing the full wealth of the problem even for such low-dimensional cases. By corroborating the results of the two methods, it becomes fairly transparent which branch the Monte Carlo approach selects for different values of the angular momentum that is used as a bifurcation parameter.

Coupling vortex dynamics with collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

R. P. Teles, Vanderlei Salvador Bagnato, F. E. A. dos Santos

Here we analyze the collective excitations as well as the expansion of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex line at its center. To this end, we propose a variational method where the variational parameters have to be carefully chosen in order to produce reliable results. Our variational calculations agree with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system considered here turns out to exhibit four collective modes of which only three can be observed at a time depending on the trap anisotropy. We also demonstrate that these collective modes can be excited using well established experimental methods such as modulation of the $s$-wave scattering length.
