Spin excitations in fermion condensates

Abstract

We investigate collective spin excitations in two-component fermion condensates with special consideration of unequal populations of the two components. The frequencies of monopole and dipole modes are calculated using Thomas-Fermi theory and the scaling approximation. We demonstrate that spin oscillations have more sensitivity to the interaction and the properties of the condensates than the density oscillations.

Spin-excited oscillations in two-component fermion condensates

Tomoyuki Maruyama, G. F. Bertsch

We investigate collective spin excitations in two-component fermion condensates with special consideration of unequal populations of the two components. The frequencies of monopole and dipole modes are calculated using Thomas-Fermi theory and the scaling approximation. As the fermion-fermion coupling is varied, the system shows various phases of the spin configuration. We demonstrate that spin oscillations have more sensitivity to the spin phase structures than the density oscillations.

Coupled breathing oscillations of two-component fermion condensates in deformed traps

Tomoyuki Maruyama, Takushi Nishimura

We investigate collective excitations coupled with monopole and quadrupole oscillations in two-component fermion condensates in deformed traps. The frequencies of monopole and dipole modes are calculated using Thomas-Fermi theory and the scaling approximation. When the trap is largely deformed, these collective motions are decoupled to the transverse and longitudinal breathing oscillation modes. As the trap approaches becoming spherical, however, they are coupled and show complicated behaviors.

Collective oscillations of a Bose-Fermi mixture: Effect of unequal masses of Bose and Fermi particles

Arup Banerjee

We investigate the effect of unequal masses of the Bose and Fermi particles on the collective oscillations of the degenerate boson-fermion mixtures. In particular, we consider the monopole and the quadrupole modes of the oscillations and study their characters and the frequencies by using variational-sum-rule approach. We find that for both the modes there exist critical values of the ratio of boson-fermion masses below and above which the character and frequency of the respective modes are significantly different.

Magnetization and Collective Excitations of a Magnetic Dipole Fermion Gas

M. Tohyama

The ground states and collective excitations of trapped Fermion gases consisting of atoms with magnetic dipole moment are studied using a time-dependent density-matrix approach. The advantages of the density-matrix approach are that one-body and two-body observables are directly calculated using one-body and two-body density matrices and that it has a clear relation to the Hartree-Fock (HF) and time-dependent HF theory. The HF calculations show the magnetization of the gases when the dipole-dipole interaction is strong. It is shown that the tensor properties of the dipole-dipole interaction are revealed in the excitation modes associated with spin degrees of freedom.

Scaling theory of excitations in trapped fermionic condensates

G. F. Bertsch, Aurel Bulgac, Ricardo A. Broglia

Formulas are derived for the coupled quadrupolar and monopolar oscillations of a fermion condensate trapped in a axially symmetric harmonic potential. We consider two-component condensates with a large particle-particle scattering length and in the limits of frequencies either small (adiabatic) or large (diabatic) compared to the pairing gap. Using the method of coordinate scaling, we reproduce Stringari's results for adiabatic excitations and present new results for the diabatic limit. Unlike the adiabatic oscillations, the diabatic ones show sensitivity to the interaction between particles.
