Abstract

We investigate the wave-packet dynamics of the power-law bond disordered one-dimensional Anderson model with hopping amplitudes decreasing as ${H}_{nm}\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\mid}n\ensuremath{-}m\ensuremath{\mid}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$. We consider the critical case $(\ensuremath{\alpha}=1)$. Using an exact diagonalization scheme on finite chains, we compute the participation moments of all stationary energy eigenstates as well as the spreading of an initially localized wave packet. The eigenstates multifractality is characterized by the set of fractal dimensions of the participation moments. The wave packet shows a diffusivelike spread developing a power-law tail and achieves a stationary nonuniform profile after reflecting at the chain boundaries. As a consequence, the time-dependent participation moments exhibit two distinct scaling regimes. We formulate a finite-size scaling hypothesis for the participation moments relating their scaling exponents to the ones governing the return probability and wave-function power-law decays.

Finite-size scaling of power-law bond-disordered Anderson models

R. P. A. Lima, Heber R. da Cruz, J. C. Cressoni +1 more

We investigate numerically the nature of energy eigenstates in one-dimensional bond-disordered Anderson models with hopping amplitudes decreasing as ${H}_{\mathrm{ij}}\ensuremath{\propto}1/|i\ensuremath{-}j{|}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}.$ The eigenstates become delocalized whenever the hopping amplitudes decay slower than $1/r.$ By performing an exact diagonalization scheme on finite chains, we compute the participation ratio of all energy eigenstates. Employing a finite-size scaling analysis, we report on the relevant scaling exponents characterizing this delocalization transition as well as the level-spacing distribution at the critical point $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1.$ The random hopping amplitudes are taken from both uniform and random sign distributions. We show that these models display similar critical behavior in the vicinity of $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1.$ However, the random sign model exhibits an asymptotic delocalization in the limit of $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\ensuremath{\infty}$ and the universal scaling behavior in this regime is also reported.

Critical dynamics of long-range quantum disordered systems

Weitao Chen, Gabriel Lemarié, Jiangbin Gong

Long-range hoppings in quantum disordered systems are known to yield quantum multifractality, the features of which can go beyond the characteristic properties associated with an Anderson transition. Indeed, critical dynamics of long-range quantum systems can exhibit anomalous dynamical behaviors distinct from those at the Anderson transition in finite dimensions. In this paper, we propose a phenomenological model of wave packet expansion in long-range hopping systems. We consider both their multifractal properties and the algebraic fat tails induced by the long-range hoppings. Using this model, we analytically derive the dynamics of moments and inverse participation ratios of the time-evolving wave packets, in connection with the multifractal dimension of the system. To validate our predictions, we perform numerical simulations of a Floquet model that is analogous to the power law random banded matrix ensemble. Unlike the Anderson transition in finite dimensions, the dynamics of such systems cannot be adequately described by a single parameter scaling law that solely depends on time. Instead, it becomes crucial to establish scaling laws involving both the finite size and the time. Explicit scaling laws for the observables under consideration are presented. Our findings are of considerable interest towards applications in the fields of many-body localization and Anderson localization on random graphs, where long-range effects arise due to the inherent topology of the Hilbert space.

Asymptotic energy profile of a wave packet in disordered chains

Stefano Lepri A, R. Schilling, S. Aubry

We investigate the long-time behavior of a wave packet initially localized at a single site ${n}_{0}$ in translationally invariant harmonic and anharmonic chains with random interactions. In the harmonic case, the energy profile $\overline{⟨{e}_{n}(t)⟩}$ averaged on time and disorder decays for large $|n\ensuremath{-}{n}_{0}|$ as a power law $\overline{⟨{e}_{n}(t)⟩}\ensuremath{\approx}C{|n\ensuremath{-}{n}_{0}|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\eta}}$, where $\ensuremath{\eta}=5/2$ and 3/2 for initial displacement and momentum excitations, respectively. The prefactor $C$ depends on the probability distribution of the harmonic coupling constants and diverges in the limit of weak disorder. As a consequence, the moments $⟨{m}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}(t)⟩$ of the energy distribution averaged with respect to disorder diverge in time as ${t}^{\ensuremath{\beta}(\ensuremath{\nu})}$ for $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\ge}2$, where $\ensuremath{\beta}=\ensuremath{\nu}+1\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\eta}$ for $\ensuremath{\nu}>\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{-}1$. Molecular-dynamics simulations yield good agreement with these theoretical predictions. Therefore, in this system, the second moment of the wave packet diverges as a function of time despite the wave packet is not spreading. Thus, this only criterion, often considered earlier as proving the spreading of a wave packet, cannot be considered as sufficient in any model. The anharmonic case is investigated numerically. It is found for intermediate disorder that the tail of the energy profile becomes very close to those of the harmonic case. For weak and strong disorders, our results suggest that the crossover to the harmonic behavior occurs at much larger $|n\ensuremath{-}{n}_{0}|$ and larger time.

Quantum percolation of one-electron states in power-law diluted chains

M. P. da Silva Jr., Samuel S. de Albuquerque, F. A. B. F. de Moura +1 more

We investigate the nature of one-electron eigenstates in power-law diluted chains for which the probability of occurrence of a bond between sites separated by a distance r decays as p(r) = 1/r1+sigma. Using an exact diagonalization scheme on finite chains, we compute the spreading of an initially localized wave-packet, the time dependent participation number as well as the return probability. Our results show the existence of a phase of extended states. By considering the scale invariance of the fluctuations of the participation number at the Anderson transition, we obtained that extended states emerges for sigma < 0.68. This limiting value is larger than the one reported in the literature for the emergence of extended states in one-dimensional Anderson models with power-law decaying couplings.

Eigenstate transitions and critical transport in 3D Aubry-André model

Pragna Das, Lev Vidmar, Miroslav Hopjan

We numerically study spectral and wave-function properties, as well as time evolution, in finite-size commensurate approximations of the 3D Aubry-André model. We explicitly show, through scaling analysis, the existence of two critical points. One of the critical points is a localization-delocalization transition in real-space, similar to the critical point in the 3D Anderson model. The other is a localization-delocalization transition in a dual momentum space, which does not have any analog in the 3D Anderson model. We estimate their values from spectral measures, such as the gap ratio and the spectral form factor, as well as from wave-function measures, such as the inverse participation ratio and the participation entropy. Additionally, we demonstrate that both critical points exhibit hallmarks of critical points between quantum ergodicity and localization. First, the eigenstates and the eigenspectrum at the critical point fulfill the mutual universal relation between the eigenspectrum compressibility $χ$ and the eigenstate fractal dimension $d^{(1)}$ [S. Jiricek et al., Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 123, e2518027123 (2026)]. Second, the dynamics of the wave packet at the critical point is governed by the critical dynamical exponent $z$, characterized by the spectral fractal dimension and the dimensionality of the lattice [M. Hopjan and L. Vidmar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 135, 060401 (2025)]. Thus, similarly to the 3D Anderson model, the critical dynamical exponent is sub-diffusive with the value of $z=3$.

Critical behavior of the two-dimensional Anderson model with long-range correlated disorder

Israel Faustino dos Santos, F. A. B. F. de Moura, M. L. Lyra +1 more

We describe the critical behavior of the Anderson-like transition predicted to occur in the 2D tight-binding model with isotropic scale-free long-range correlated disorder characterized by a power-law spectral density. We explore the scale invariance of the participation function relative fluctuation at the critical point to locate the mobility edge as a function of the power-law spectral density exponent α 2D . The states near the band center, which exhibit power-law localization for uncorrelated disorder, become delocalized for α 2D >2. In addition, we consider the finite-size scaling hypothesis to estimate the correlation length critical exponent. We find that the critical exponent ν depends on α 2D , thus indicating that correlations in the disorder distribution are indeed relevant in this regime, in agreement with the extended Harris criterion.
