Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Field theory analysis of S=1 antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chains in the dimer phase

Junya Tamaki, Masaki Oshikawa

Dynamics of $S=1$ antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chains in the dimer phase, in the vicinity of the critical point with the Haldane phase, is studied by a field theoretical method. This model is considered to represent the compound Ni(C${}_{9}$H${}_{24}$N${}_{4}$)(NO${}_{2}$)ClO${}_{4}$ (abbreviated as NTENP). We derive a sine-Gordon (SG) field theory as a low-energy effective model of this system, starting from a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at the critical point. Using the exact solution of the SG theory, we give a field theoretical picture of the low-energy excitation spectrum of NTENP. Results derived from our picture are in a good agreement with results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on NTENP and numerical calculation of the dynamical structure factor. Furthermore, on the basis of the obtained theoretical picture, we predict that the sharp peaks corresponding to a single elementary excitation are absent in the Raman scattering spectrum of NTENP in contrast to the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum.

A Quantum Spin Chain in High Magnetic Fields

The magnetization process of a single crystal of the spin (S) one linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet, Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4), under very high magnetic field has been measured. The magnetization is very small in the low-field region and begins to increase sharply at a finite field for all three of the principal axes. The transition field (HT) above which the system becomes magnetic depends on the direction of the applied field. These experimental results are consistent with the picture that (i) the ground state of S=1 linear chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a singlet and (ii) the system becomes magnetic above HT due to closing of the quantum energy gap. The experimental results are analyzed based on a simple energy level scheme. The anisotropy in HT is successfully explained by the theory using the following parameters; the Haldane gap energy EG=17K and the single ion anisotropy constant |D|=16K. These values of EG and D are close to those obtained from other experiments. Using the theory developed in analyzing the magnetization data, we can also explain the behavior of the excitation spectrum of this compound in external magnetic fields determined from the neutron inelastic scattering experiment.

Haldane-gap chains in a magnetic field

Fabian H. L. Eßler, Ian K. Affleck

We consider quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg chains with crystal field anisotropy in a uniform magnetic field. We determine the dynamical structure factor in various limits and obtain a fairly complete qualitative picture of how it changes with the applied field. In particular, we discuss how the width of the higher energy single magnon modes depends on the field. We consider the effects of a weak interchain coupling. We discuss the relevance of our results for recent neutron scattering experiments on the quasi-1D Haldane-gap compound NDMAP.

Spin Dynamics of NTENP and NDMAP in Transverse Magnetic Fields

We calculate the field dependence of dynamical structure factors of the S = 1 bondalternating Heisenberg-chain compound Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 and the S = 1 Haldanegap compound Ni(C5D14N2)2N3(PF6).We show that in the former system the highest magnon branch vanishes at H ∼ 0.63Hc and one gapped branch emerges in H > Hc, where Hc is the critical field for the energy-gap closing. In the latter system, by contrast, three distinct magnon branches appear below and above Hc.The results are in qualitative agreement with recent experimental findings.
