Abstract

We investigate the phase diagram of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with two different nearest-neighbour bonds J and J' ( J – J' model) at zero temperature. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition at a critical value between a semi-classically ordered Néel and a magnetically disordered quantum paramagnetic phase of valence-bond type, which is driven by local singlet formation on J' bonds. We study the influence of spin quantum number s on this phase transition by means of a variational mean-field approach, the coupled cluster method and the Lanczos exact-diagonalization technique. We present evidence that the critical value increases with growing s according to .

The influence of Ising anisotropy on the zero-temperature phase transition in the square lattice spin-½J–J model

R. Darradi, Johannes Richter, Sven E. Krüger

We use a variational mean-field-like approach, the coupled cluster method (CCM), and exact diagonalization to investigate the ground-state order–disorder transition for the square lattice spin-half XXZ model with two different nearest-neighbour couplings J and . On increasing the model shows in the isotropic Heisenberg limit a second-order transition from semi-classical Néel order to a quantum paramagnetic phase with enhanced local dimer correlations on the bonds at about . This transition is driven by the quantum competition between and J . On increasing the anisotropy parameter Δ>1 we diminish the quantum fluctuations and thus the degree of competition. As a result the transition point is shifted to larger values. We find indications for a linear increase of with Δ, i.e. the transition disappears in the Ising limit .

Quantum phase transitions of a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with two kinds of nearest-neighbor bonds: A high-order coupled-cluster treatment

Sven E. Krüger, Johannes Richter, Jörg Schulenburg +2 more

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram and the low-lying excitations of a square-lattice spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet with two types of regularly distributed nearest-neighbor exchange bonds $[J>0$ (antiferromagnetic) and $\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\infty}<{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}<\ensuremath{\infty}]$ using the coupled cluster method (CCM) for high orders of approximation (up to LSUB8). We use a N\'eel model state as well as a helical model state as a starting point for the CCM calculations. We find a second-order transition from a phase with N\'eel order to a finite-gap quantum disordered phase for sufficiently large antiferromagnetic exchange constants ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}>0.$ For frustrating ferromagnetic couplings ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}<0$ we find indications that quantum fluctuations favor a first-order phase transition from the N\'eel order to a quantum helical state, by contrast with the corresponding second-order transition in the corresponding classical model. The results are compared to those of exact diagonalizations of finite systems (up to 32 sites) and those of spin-wave and variational calculations. The CCM results agree well with the exact diagonalization data over the whole range of the parameters. The special case of ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0,$ which is equivalent to the honeycomb lattice, is treated more closely.

The effect of anisotropy on the ground-state magnetic ordering of the spin-1 quantumJ1XXZ–J2XXZmodel on the square lattice

R. F. Bishop, P. H. Y. Li, R. Darradi +2 more

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the J 1 XXZ – J 2 XXZ Heisenberg model for spin-1 particles on an infinite square lattice interacting via nearest-neighbour ( ) and next-nearest-neighbour ( J 2 >0) bonds. The two bonds have the same XXZ -type anisotropy in spin space. The effects on the quasiclassical Néel-ordered and collinear stripe-ordered states of varying the anisotropy parameter Δ are investigated using the coupled cluster method carried out up to high orders. By contrast with the case for spin- particles studied previously, no intermediate disordered phase between the Néel and collinear stripe phases, for any value of the frustration J 2 / J 1 , for either the z -aligned (Δ>1) or xy -planar-aligned (0≤Δ<1) states, is predicted here. The quantum phase transition is determined as first order for all values of J 2 / J 1 and Δ. The position of the phase boundary J 2 c (Δ) is determined accurately. It is observed to deviate most from its classical position (for all values of Δ>0) at the Heisenberg isotropic point (Δ = 1), where J 2 c (1) = 0.55 ± 0.01. By contrast, at the XY isotropic point (Δ = 0), we find J 2 c (0) = 0.50 ± 0.01. In the Ising limit ( ), as expected.

Ground state phases of the spin-1/2 J1–J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice: A high-order coupled cluster treatment

R. Darradi, Oleg Derzhko, Ronald Zinke +3 more

Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and complementary exact diagonalization studies we investigate the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}--{J}_{2}$ frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We have calculated the ground state energy, the magnetic order parameter, the spin stiffness, and several generalized susceptibilities to probe magnetically disordered quantum valence-bond phases. We have found that the quantum critical points for both the N\'eel and collinear orders are ${J}_{2}^{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}^{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the results obtained by other approximations. In contrast to the recent study by [Sirker et al. Phys. Rev. B 73, 184420 (2006)], our data do not provide evidence for the transition from the N\'eel to the valence-bond solid state to be first order. Moreover, our results are in favor of the deconfinement scenario for that phase transition. We also discuss the nature of the magnetically disordered quantum phase.

The spin-1/2 and spin-1 quantum J1-J1'-J2 Heisenberg models on the square lattice

RF Bishop, P. H. Y. Li, Darradi, R +1 more

We study the J1-J1'-J2 quantum spin model on the two-dimensional square lattice using the coupled cluster method. We compare and contrast the influence of the interchain coupling J1' on the zero-temperature phase diagrams for the two spin values s = 1/2 and s = 1. Our most important result for the s = 1/2 case is the predicted existence of a quantum triple point (QTP) at (J1' ≈ 0.60 ± 0.03, J2 ≈ 0.33 ± 0.02) when J1 = 1. Below the QTP (J1'/J1 ≤ 0.60) we predict a second-order phase transition between the quasi-classical Neel and stripe-ordered phases, whereas the corresponding classical model, which contains only these two phases for all spin values s, yields a first-order transition. Above the QTP (J1'/J1 ≥ 0.60) an intermediate disordered phase emerges, which has no classical counterpart. By contrast, the situation for s = 1 is qualitatively different. Instead of a QTP where three phases co-exist, we now predict a quantum tricritical point at (J1' ≈ 0.66 ± 0.03, J2 ≈ 0.35 ± 0.02) when J1 = 1, where a line of second-order phase transitions between the quasi classical Neel and stripe-ordered phases (for J1'/J1 ≤ 0.66) meets a line of first-order phase transitions between the same two states (for J1'/J1 ≥ 0.66). Surprisingly, we find no evidence at all for any intermediate disordered phase in the s = 1 case.

Ground-state phases of the spin- 1 J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice

P. H. Y. Li, R. F. Bishop

We study the zero-temperature quantum phase diagram of a spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice with both nearest-neighbor exchange coupling ${J}_{1}>0$ and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor coupling ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\kappa}{J}_{1}>0$, using the coupled cluster method implemented to high orders of approximation, and based on model states with different forms of classical magnetic order. For each we calculate directly in the bulk thermodynamic limit both ground-state low-energy parameters (including the energy per spin, magnetic order parameter, spin stiffness coefficient, and zero-field uniform transverse magnetic susceptibility) and their generalized susceptibilities to various forms of valence-bond crystalline (VBC) order, as well as the energy gap to the lowest-lying spin-triplet excitation. In the range $0<\ensuremath{\kappa}<1$ we find evidence for four distinct phases. Two of these are quasiclassical phases with antiferromagnetic long-range order, one with two-sublattice N\'eel order for $\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}=0.250(5)$, and another with four-sublattice N\'eel-II order for $\ensuremath{\kappa}>{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}=0.340(5)$. Two different paramagnetic phases are found to exist in the intermediate region. Over the range ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{1}}<\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{c}^{i}=0.305(5)$ we find a gapless phase with no discernible magnetic order, which is a strong candidate for being a quantum spin liquid, while over the range ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{c}^{i}<\ensuremath{\kappa}<{\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{{c}_{2}}$ we find a gapped phase, which is most likely a lattice nematic with staggered dimer VBC order that breaks the lattice rotational symmetry.
