Abstract

We study the ground-state properties of hard-core bosons trapped by arbitrary confining potentials on one-dimensional optical lattices. A recently developed exact approach based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation is used. We analyze the large distance behavior of the one-particle density matrix, the momentum distribution function, and the lowest natural orbitals. In addition, the low-density limit in the lattice is studied systematically, and the results obtained compared with the ones known for the hard-core boson gas without the lattice.

Finite-temperature properties of hard-core bosons confined on one-dimensional optical lattices

Marcos Rigol

We present an exact study of the finite-temperature properties of hard-core bosons (HCB's) confined on one-dimensional optical lattices. Our solution of the HCB problem is based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation and properties of Slater determinants. We analyze the effects of the temperature on the behavior of the one-particle correlations, the momentum distribution function, and the lowest natural orbitals. In addition, we compare results obtained using the grand-canonical and canonical descriptions for systems like the ones recently achieved experimentally. We show that even for such small systems, as small as 10 HCB's in 50 lattice sites, there are only minor differences between the energies and momentum distributions obtained within both ensembles.

Universal properties of hard-core bosons confined on one-dimensional lattices

Marcos Rigol, Alejandro Muramatsu

Based on an exact treatment of hard-core bosons confined on one-dimensional lattices, we obtain the large distance behavior of the one-particle density matrix, and show how it determines the occupation of the lowest natural orbital in the thermodynamic limit. We also study the occupation ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\ensuremath{\eta}}$ of the natural orbitals for large-$\ensuremath{\eta}$ at low densities. Both quantities show universal behavior independently of the confining potential. Finite-size corrections and the momentum distribution function for finite systems are also analyzed.

Bose-Fermi mixture in one-dimensional optical lattices with hard-core interactions

Xiaoming Cai, Liming Guan, Shu Chen +2 more

We study a mixture of $N_{b}$ bosons with point hard-core boson-boson interactions and $N_{f}$ noninteracting spinless fermions with point hard-core boson-fermion interactions in 1D optical lattice with external harmonic confine potential. Using an extended Jordan-Winger transformation (JWT) which maps the hard-core Bose-Fermi mixture into two component noninteracting spinless fermions with hard-core interactions between them, we get the ground states of the system. Then we determine in details the one particle density matrix, density profile, momentum distribution, the natural orbitals and their occupations based on the constructed ground state wavefunctions. We also discuss the ground state properties of the system with large but finite interactions which lead to the lift of ground degeneracy. Our results show that, although the total density profile is almost not affected, the distributions for bosons and fermions strongly depend on the relative strengthes of boson-boson interactions and boson-fermion interactions.

Finite-temperature properties of one-dimensional hard-core bosons in a quasiperiodic optical lattice

Nicolás Nessi, Anı́bal Iucci

We investigate the properties of impenetrable bosons confined in a one-dimensional lattice at finite temperature in the presence of an additional incommensurate periodic potential. Relying on the exact Fermi-Bose mapping, we study the effects of temperature on the one-particle density matrix and related quantities such as the momentum distribution function and the natural orbitals. We found evidence of a finite-temperature crossover related to the zero-temperature superfluid-to-Bose-glass-transition that induces a delocalization of the lowest natural orbitals.

Ground-state properties of hard-core anyons in one-dimensional optical lattices

Yajiang Hao, Yunbo Zhang, Shu Chen

We investigate the ground-state properties of anyons confined in one-dimensional optical lattices with a weak harmonic trap using the exact numerical method based on Jordan-Wigner transformation. It is shown that in the Bose limit $(\ensuremath{\chi}=1)$ and Fermi limit $(\ensuremath{\chi}=0)$ the momentum distributions are symmetric but in between they are asymmetric. It turns out that the origin of asymmetry comes from the fractional statistics that anyons obey. The occupation distribution and the modulus of natural orbitals show crossover behaviors from the Bose limit to the Fermi limit.

Ground-state properties of hard-core bosons in one-dimensional harmonic traps

T. Papenbrock

The one-particle density matrices for hard-core bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are computed numerically for systems with up to 160 bosons. Diagonalization of the density matrix shows that the many-body ground state is not Bose-Einstein condensed. The ground-state occupation, the amplitude of the lowest natural orbital, and the zero momentum peak height scale as powers of the particle number, and the corresponding exponents are related to each other. Close to its diagonal, the density matrix for hard-core bosons is similar to that of noninteracting fermions.
