Decoherence of localized spins interacting via RKKY interaction

Abstract

We theoretically study decoherence of two localized spins interacting via the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in one-, two-, and three-dimensional electron gas. We derive the kinetic equation for the reduced density matrix of the localized spins and show that energy relaxation caused by singlet-triplet transition is suppressed when the RKKY interaction is ferromagnetic. We also estimate the decoherence time of the system consisting of two quantum dots embedded in a two-dimensional electron gas.

Spectral properties and quantum phase transitions in parallel triple quantum dots

Weizhong Wang

The spectral properties and the quantum phase transitions in parallel triple quantum dot systems are investigated using the numerical renormalization-group method. For small interdot hopping $t$, the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between the dots is identified in the spectra and is consistent with that obtained by the perturbation theory. With increasing $t$, due to the competition between the RKKY exchange and the direct exchange between dots, there exist two first-order quantum phase transitions between the phases with the local spin ${S}_{\mathit{\text{dot}}}=3∕2$, $1∕2$, and 0 on the dots. At low temperature, the local spin ${S}_{\mathit{\text{dot}}}=3∕2$ is partially screened to a residual spin $S=1$, while the local spin ${S}_{\mathit{\text{dot}}}=1∕2$ is totally screened. In both local quadruplet and doublet states, the Kondo resonance accompanied with a conductance of the unitary limit $2{e}^{2}∕h$ is observed, while no Kondo effect is found in the local spin-singlet state.

Two-impurity Kondo model with spin-orbit interactions

David F. Mross, Henrik Johannesson

We study the two-impurity Kondo model (TIKM) in two dimensions with spin-orbit coupled conduction electrons. In the first part of the paper we analyze how spin-orbit interactions of Rashba as well as Dresselhaus type influence the Kondo and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interactions in the TIKM, generalizing results obtained by H. Imamura et al. [Phys. Rev. B 69, 121303(R) (2004)] and J. Malecki [J. Stat. Phys. 129, 741 (2007)]. Using our findings we then explore the effect from spin-orbit interactions on the non-Fermi-liquid quantum critical transition between the RKKY-singlet and Kondo-screened RKKY-triplet states. We argue that spin-orbit interactions under certain conditions produce a line of critical points exhibiting the same leading scaling behavior as that of the ordinary TIKM. In the second part of the paper we shift focus and turn to the question of how spin-orbit interactions affect the entanglement between two localized RKKY-coupled spins in the parameter regime where the competition from the direct Kondo interaction can be neglected. Using data for a device with two spinful quantum dots patterned in a gated InAs heterostructure we show that a gate-controlled spin-orbit interaction may drive a maximally entangled state to one with vanishing entanglement or vice versa (as measured by the concurrence). This has important implications for proposals using RKKY interactions for nonlocal control of qubit entanglement in semiconductor heterostructures.

Conduction electrons and the decoherence of impurity-bound electrons in a semiconductor

Kuljit S. Virk, John E. Sipe

We study the dynamics of impurity-bound electrons interacting with a bath of conduction band electrons in a semiconductor. Only the exchange interaction is considered. We derive master equations for the density matrices of single- and two-qubit systems under the usual Born and Markov approximations. The bath mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida interaction in the two-qubit case arises naturally. It leads to an energy shift significant only when the ratio $({R}_{T})$ of the interqubit distance to the thermal de Broglie wavelength of the bath electrons is small. This bath mediated interaction also has a profound impact on the decoherence times; the effect decreases monotonically with ${R}_{T}$.

Coherent exchange-coupled nonlocal Kondo impurities

Lidia Stocker, Oded Zilberberg

Quantum dots exhibit a variety of strongly correlated effects, e.g., they can emulate localized magnetic impurities that form a Kondo singlet with their surrounding environment. Interestingly, in double-dot setups, such magnetic impurities couple to each other by direct Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, which wins over the Kondo physics. In this work, we investigate a double-dot device where the dots are coupled via off-resonant ballistic modes, dubbed electronic cavity modes. Within this cavity-double-dot system, we study, using variational matrix product state techniques, the competition between Kondo formation and the combined coherent orbital hybridization and RKKY-like interaction that the cavity facilitates. Specifically, we find that Kondo can form on each dot individually whereby the cavity can either (i) destroy the Kondo via the RKKY that mediates a singlet state on the two dots, or (ii) lead to an exotic orbital macrsoscopic superposition of the Kondo forming on each of the dots. We dub the latter “Kondo cat”. En route to this key finding, we rigorously study the many-body phase diagram of the system, as well as compare it with the case of coupling the dots via an incoherent RKKY channel. The realization of a Kondo cat can facilitate applications in metrology, and reveal the spin coherence length in mesoscopic devices. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dephasing of two-spin states by electron-phonon interaction in semiconductor nanostructures: Spin-boson model with a dissipative reservoir

Xuedong Hu

We study electron-phonon interaction induced decoherence between two-electron singlet and triplet states in a semiconductor double quantum dot using a spin-boson model. We investigate the onset and time evolution of this dephasing, and study its dependence on quantum dot parameters such as dot size and double dot separations, as well as the host materials (GaAs and Si). We find that electron-phonon interaction causes an initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space, and a long-time exponential decay originating from phonon relaxation.

Two-spin dephasing by electron-phonon interaction in semiconductor double quantum dots

At the short time limit, electron-phonon interaction only causes an incomplete initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space; a complete long-time exponential decay due to phonon relaxation would eventually dominate over two-spin decoherence. We analyze two-spin decoherence in both symmetric and biased double quantum dots, identifying their difference in electron-phonon coupling and the relevant consequences.
