Experimental Observation of the Tilting Mode of an Array of Vortices in a Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract

We have measured the precession frequency of a vortex lattice in a Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb87 atoms. The observed mode corresponds to a collective motion in which all the vortices in the array are tilted by a small angle with respect to the z axis (the symmetry axis of the trapping potential) and synchronously rotate about this axis. This motion corresponds to excitation of a Kelvin wave along the core of each vortex and we have verified that it has the handedness expected for such helical waves, i.e., precession in the opposite sense to the rotational flow around the vortices.

Kelvin-Tkachenko waves of few-vortex arrays in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Tapio Simula, K. Machida

We have calculated the low-lying elementary excitations of three-dimensional few-vortex arrays in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. The number of different Kelvin-Tkachenko vortex wave branches found matches the number of vortices in the condensate. The lowest odd-parity modes exhibit superfluid gyroscopic vortex motion. Experimentally, these modes could be excited and observed individually or in connection with the formation and decay of quantum turbulence.

Collective dynamics of vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Tapio Simula

We have calculated collective-mode spectra for three-dimensional, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in oblate harmonic traps using the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes field theory. For condensates with ${N}_{v}$ vortices, ${N}_{v}$ Kelvin-Tkachenko-mode branches are obtained. The features of these modes are compared with those predicted by a classical point-vortex model. We have created movies to visualize the motion of the vortices corresponding to the Kelvin-Tkachenko waves.

Precession of vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature

B. G. Wild, David A. W. Hutchinson

We demonstrate that the precessional frequencies of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are determined by a conservation law and not by the lowest-lying excitation energy mode. We determine the precessional frequency for a single off-axis vortex and vortex lattices in BECs using the continuity equation and solve this self-consistently with the time-independent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations in the rotating frame. We find agreement with zero-temperature calculations (Bogoliubov approximation) and a smooth variation in the precession frequency as the temperature is increased. Time-dependent solutions confirm the validity of these predictions.

Vortex Precession in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Observations with Filled and Empty Cores

Brian P. Anderson, P. C. Haljan, Carl Wieman +1 more

We have observed and characterized the dynamics of singly quantized vortices in dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates. Our condensates are produced in a superposition of two internal states of 87Rb, with one state supporting a vortex and the other filling the vortex core. Subsequently, the state filling the core can be partially or completely removed, reducing the radius of the core by as much as a factor of 13, all the way down to its bare value of the healing length. The corresponding superfluid rotation rates, evaluated at the core radius, vary by a factor of 150, but the precession frequency of the vortex core about the condensate axis changes by only a factor of 2.

Kelvin modes of a fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

Frédéric Chevy, S. Stringari

Using the concept of diffused vorticity and the formalism of rotational hydrodynamics we calculate the eigenmodes of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate containing an array of quantized vortices. We predict the occurrence of a new branch of anomalous excitations, analogous to the Kelvin modes of the single vortex dynamics. Special attention is devoted to the excitation of the anomalous scissors mode.

Quantized vortices in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Makoto Tsubota

In this review, we give an overview of the experimental and theoretical advances in the physics of quantized vortices in dilute atomic-gas Bose--Einstein condensates in a trapping potential, especially focusing on experimental research activities and their theoretical interpretations. Making good use of the atom optical technique, the experiments have revealed many novel structural and dynamic properties of quantized vortices by directly visualizing vortex cores from an image of the density profiles. These results lead to a deep understanding of superfluid hydrodynamics of such systems. Typically, vortices are stabilized by a rotating potential created by a laser beam, magnetic field, and thermal gas. Finite size effects and inhomogeneity of the system, originating from the confinement by the trapping potential, yield unique vortex dynamics coupled with the collective excitations of the condensate. Measuring the frequencies of the collective modes is an accurate tool for clarifying the character of the vortex state. The topics included in this review are the mechanism of vortex formation, equilibrium properties, and dynamics of a single vortex and those of a vortex lattice in a rapidly rotating condensate.
