Optical excitations of Peierls–Mott insulators with bond disorder

Abstract

The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is employed to calculate optical properties of the half-filled Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interactions. In order to model the optical excitations of oligoenes, a Peierls dimerization is included whose strength for the single bonds may fluctuate. Systems with up to 100 electrons are investigated, their wave functions are analyzed, and relevant length-scales for the low-lying optical excitations are identified. The presented approach provides a concise picture for the size dependence of the optical absorption in oligoenes.

Optical absorption of strongly correlated half-filled Mott-Hubbard chains

In this last of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in a half-filled Peierls-distorted chain we address the dimerized extended Hubbard model in the limit of a large on-site interaction U. When the Hubbard interaction is large both compared to the band width W and the nearest-neighbor interaction V the charge dynamics is properly described by the Harris-Lange model. This model can be exactly mapped onto a model of free spinless Fermions in parallel (Hubbard-)bands of width W which are eventually Peierls-split. To determine the coherent absorption features at low temperatures we design and employ the “no-recoil approximation ” in which we assume that the momentum transfer to the spin degrees of freedom can only be ∆qS = 0 or ∆qS = π/a during an optical excitation. We present explicit analytical results for the optical absorption in the presence of a lattice dimerization δ and a nearest-neighbor interaction V for the Néel and dimer state. We find

Optical phonons for Peierls chains with long-range Coulomb interactions

Máté Timár, Gergely Barcza, Florian Gebhard +1 more

We consider a chain of atoms that are bound together by a harmonic force. Spin-1/2 electrons that move between neighboring chain sites (H\"uckel model) induce a lattice dimerization at half band filling (Peierls effect). We supplement the H\"uckel model with a local Hubbard interaction and a long-range Ohno potential, and calculate the average bond-length, dimerization, and optical phonon frequencies for finite straight and zigzag chains using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We check our numerical approach against analytic results for the H\"uckel model. The Hubbard interaction mildly affects the average bond length but substantially enhances the dimerization and increases the optical phonon frequencies whereas, for moderate Coulomb parameters, the long-range Ohno interaction plays no role.

Effect of Electron-Phonon Interaction on Optical Properties in One-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Takami Tohyama, Hiroaki Matsueda

Interplay of strong electron correlation and electron-phonon interaction is one of important issues in the physics of low dimensional correlated electron systems. In order to understand the interplay, we examine the optical properties of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, by employing the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We discuss the effect of the electron-phonon interaction on the single-particle spectral function and the optical absorption spectrum. The dynamical DMRG data are compared with experimental data of 1D copper oxide Mott insulators.

Dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method

Eric Jeckelmann

A density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for calculating dynamical properties and excited states in low-dimensional lattice quantum many-body systems is presented. The method is based on an exact variational principle for dynamical correlation functions and the excited states contributing to them. This dynamical DMRG is an alternate formulation of the correction vector DMRG but is both simpler and more accurate. The finite-size scaling of spectral functions is discussed and a method for analyzing the scaling of dense spectra is described. The key idea of the method is a size-dependent broadening of the spectrum. The dynamical DMRG and the finite-size scaling analysis are demonstrated on the optical conductivity of the one-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model. Comparisons with analytical results show that the spectral functions of infinite systems can be reproduced almost exactly with these techniques. The optical conductivity of the Mott-Peierls insulator is investigated and it is shown that its spectrum is qualitatively different from the simple spectra observed in Peierls (band) insulators and one-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulators.

Quantum lattice dynamical effects on single-particle excitations in one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators

Holger Fehske, Gerhard Wellein, Georg Hager +2 more

As a generic model describing quasi-one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators, we investigate the Holstein-Hubbard model for half-filled bands using numerical techniques. Combining Lanczos diagonalization with Chebyshev moment expansion we calculate exactly the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra, and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. While polaronic features emerge only at strong electron-phonon couplings, pronounced phonon signatures, such as multiquanta band states, can be found in the Mott insulating regime as well. In order to corroborate the Mott to Peierls transition scenario, we determine the spin- and charge-excitation gaps by a finite-size scaling analysis based on density-matrix renormalization-group calculations.
