Abstract

We investigate the possibility of quantum (or wave) chaos for the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in billiards. Because of the mean field interaction in the condensate, the Bogoliubov excitations are very different from the single particle excitations in a noninteracting system. Nevertheless, we predict that the statistical distribution of level spacings is unchanged by mapping the non-Hermitian Bogoliubov operator to a real symmetric matrix. We numerically test our prediction by using a phase shift method for calculating the excitation energies.

Dynamical thermalization of Bose-Einstein condensate in Bunimovich stadium

Leonardo Ermann, E. Vergini, Dima L. Shepelyansky

We study numerically the wave function evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a Bunimovich stadium billiard being governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that for a moderate nonlinearity, above a certain threshold, there is emergence of dynamical thermalization which leads to the Bose-Einstein probability distribution over the linear eigenmodes of the stadium. This distribution is drastically different from the energy equipartition over oscillator degrees of freedom which would lead to the ultra-violet catastrophe. We argue that this interesting phenomenon can be studied in cold-atom experiments.

Bogoliubov theory for mutually coherent condensates

Paolo Tommasini, E. J. V. de Passos, A. F. R. de Toledo Piza +2 more

We analyze the mean-field equilibrium states of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate of boson particles in different internal states, possibly in the presence of an internal Josephson interaction, and we describe the quantum fluctuations by constructing an explicit form of the Bogoliubov transformation that characterizes the quasiparticle excitations of the system. The derivation of the Bogoliubov transformation is based on a simple geometrical picture which leads to a convenient parametrization of the transformation. Our calculations of physical properties, such as depletions and phonon velocities, as well as our discussion of stability, indicate the sense and the extent to which the internal Josephson interaction controls the many-body physics of multicomponent phase coherent matter.

A nonlinear dynamics approach to Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates

Manuel Kreibich, Holger Cartarius, Jörg Main +1 more

We assume the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a superposition of Gaussian wave packets, with time-dependent complex width parameters, insert it into the mean-field energy functional corresponding to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and apply the time-dependent variational principle. In this way the GPE is mapped onto a system of coupled equations of motion for the complex width parameters, which can be analyzed using the methods of nonlinear dynamics. We perform a stability analysis of the fixed points of the nonlinear system, and demonstrate that the eigenvalues of the Jacobian reproduce the low-lying quantum mechanical Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of a condensate in an axisymmetric trap.

Chaos Induced by Quantization

Takaomi Shigehara, Hiroshi Mizoguchi, Taketoshi Mishima +1 more

In this paper, we show that two-dimensional billiards with point interactions inside exhibit a chaotic nature in the microscopic world, although their classical counterpart is non-chaotic. After deriving the transition matrix of the system by using the self-adjoint extension theory of functional analysis, we deduce the general condition for the appearance of chaos. The prediction is confirmed by numerically examining the statistical properties of energy spectrum of rectangular billiards with multiple point interactions inside. The dependence of the level statistics on the strength as well as the number of the scatterers is displayed. NONLINEAR DYNAMICS OF WAVE PACKETS AND VORTICES IN BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES Chaos and Billiard Motion

Kaoru Nakamura

We study the dynamics of single and multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in two dimensions with and without a harmonic trap by using various variants of non- linear Schrodinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation. Firstly, we examine the three-component repulsive BEC with cubic nonlinearity in a harmonic trap, and see the conservative chaos based on a picture of vortex molecules. We obtain an effective nonlinear dynamics for three vortex cores, which are equivalent to three charged particles under the uniform magnetic field with the repulsive inter-particle potential quadratic in the inter-vortex distance r ij on short length scale and logarithmic in r ij on large length scale. The vortices here acquire the inertia in marked contrast to the standard theory of point vortices since Onsager. We then explore chaos in the three-body problem in the context of vortices with inertia. Secondly, by choosing the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with saturable nonlinearity, we investigate the single and multi-component WP dynamics within the hard-walled square and stadium billiards with neither a harmonic trap nor driving field. We analyze the stability of WPs by using the variational (collective-coordinate) method. By emitting the radiation the Gaussian WP becomes deformed to a bell-shaped one and then stabilized. As the velocity increases, WPs tend to be stable against many collisions with billiard walls.
