Abstract

We consider a three-boson system with resonant binary interactions and show that for sufficiently narrow resonances three-body observables depend only on the resonance width and the scattering length. The effect of narrow resonances is qualitatively different from that of wide resonances revealing novel physics of three-body collisions. We calculate the rate of three-body recombination to a weakly bound level and the atom-dimer scattering length and discuss implications for experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates and atom-molecule mixtures near Feshbach resonances.

Range corrections to three-body observables near a Feshbach resonance

Lucas Platter, Chen Ji, Daniel R. Phillips

A nonrelativistic system of three identical particles will display a rich set of universal features known as Efimov physics if the scattering length $a$ is much larger than the range $l$ of the underlying two-body interaction. An appropriate effective theory facilitates the derivation of both results in the $\ensuremath{\mid}a\ensuremath{\mid}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ limit and finite-$l∕a$ corrections to observables of interest. Here we use such an effective-theory treatment to consider the impact of corrections linear in the two-body effective range, ${r}_{s}$, on the three-boson bound-state spectrum and recombination rate for $\ensuremath{\mid}a\ensuremath{\mid}⪢\ensuremath{\mid}{r}_{s}\ensuremath{\mid}$. We do this by first deriving results appropriate to the strict limit $\ensuremath{\mid}a\ensuremath{\mid}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ in coordinate space. We then extend these results to finite $a$ using once-subtracted momentum-space integral equations. We take the cutoff on these equations to be large compared to $1∕\ensuremath{\mid}{r}_{s}\ensuremath{\mid}$, and find that the first-order effects of $\ensuremath{\mid}{r}_{s}\ensuremath{\mid}$ are independent of the cutoff in this regime. We also discuss the implications of our results for experiments that probe three-body recombination in Bose-Einstein condensates near a Feshbach resonance.

Ultracold three-body collisions near narrow Feshbach resonances

Yujun Wang, José Paulo D'Incao, Brett D. Esry

We study ultracold three-body collisions of bosons and fermions when the interatomic interaction is tuned near a narrow Feshbach resonance. We show that the width of the resonance has a substantial impact on the collisional properties of ultracold gases in the strongly interacting regime. From our numerical and analytical analyses, we identify universal features dependent on the resonance width. Remarkably, we find that all inelastic processes near narrow resonances leading to deeply bound states in bosonic systems are suppressed, while those for fermionic systems are enhanced. As a result, narrow resonances present a scenario that is the reverse of that found for broad resonances, opening up the possibility of creating stable samples of ultracold bosonic gases with large scattering lengths.

Three-body problem of bosons near a d -wave resonance

Juan Yao, Pengfei Zhang, Ran Qi +1 more

Motivated by recent experimental progresses, we investigate few-body properties of interacting spinless bosons near a $d$-wave resonance. Using the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosion (STM) equations, we calculate the scattering length between an atom and a $d$-wave dimer, and we find that the atom-dimer scattering length is positive and is much smaller the result from the mean-field approximation. We also reveal unique properties of the three-body recombination rate for a degenerate Bose condensate near the $d$-wave resonance. We find that the total recombination rate is nearly a constant at the quasibound side, in contrast to the behavior of a thermal gas near a high-partial-wave resonance. We also find that the recombination rate monotonically increases across the unitary point toward the bound side, which is due to the largely enhanced coupling between the atom and the $d$-wave dimer with deeper binding energy. This monotonic behavior is also qualitatively different from that of a degenerate gas near an $s$-wave resonance counterpart.

Few-Body Physics in Quantum Gases

K. Helfrich

Few-body effects play an important role for the understanding of ultracold quantum gases. We make use of an effective field theory approach to investigate various aspects of universal few-body physics close to a Feshbach resonance. That is the regime where the scattering length is large compared to all other length scales of the system and thus determines the observables. It is also the regime where the Efimov effect whose main characteristic is the occurrence of a sequence of three-body bound states becomes important. At unitarity, i.e., for diverging scattering length, the ratio of binding energies of neighboring states approaches a constant. The existence of those trimers can be captured by a single three-body parameter and influences observables such as recombination rates. Starting from adequate Lagrangians, we derive atom-dimer scattering amplitudes that contain all information of interest about the three-particle systems. With this method, we first investigate the scattering of atoms and dimers at finite temperature in the presence of the Efimov effect. We calculate the dimer relaxation rate and obtain good agreement with available experimental data. Furthermore, heteronuclear mixtures exhibiting large interspecies scattering length are studied in detail. If bosons are the majority species, the Efimov effect occurs in an S-wave channel and we are able to compute three-body recombination and dimer relaxation rates. The results are compared to the outcome of two existing experiments. For mainly fermionic systems, the Efimov effect is only present in an overall P-wave and three-body recombination at threshold vanishes. However, in mixtures of atoms and dimers, scattering cross sections and dimer relaxation show the typical Efimov behavior of log-periodicity. We also consider two-dimensional Bose gases, where the Efimov effect does not occur. For those systems, we derive an equation including the first non-universal corrections and deduce three-body observables such as binding energies and atom-dimer scattering parameters.

Efimov states near a Feshbach resonance

Pietro Massignan, Henk T. C. Stoof

We describe three-body collisions close to a Feshbach resonance by taking into account two-body scattering processes involving both the open and the closed channels. We extract the atom-dimer scattering length and the three-body recombination rate, predicting the existence at negative scattering length of a sharp minimum in the recombination losses due to the presence of a shallow bound level. We obtain very good agreement with the experimental results in atomic $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ of Kraemer et al. [Nature (London) 440, 315 (2006)], and predict the position of Efimov resonances in a gas of $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ atoms.

Unitary boson-boson and boson-fermion mixtures: third virial coefficient and three-body parameter on a narrow Feshbach resonance

Shimpei Endo, Yvan Castin

We give exact integral expressions of the third cluster or virial coefficients of binary mixtures of ideal Bose or Fermi gases, with interspecies interactions of zero range and infinite s-wave scattering length. In general the result depends on three-body parameters Rt appearing in three-body contact conditions, because an Efimov effect is present or because the mixture is in a preefimovian regime with a mass ratio close to an Efimov effect threshold. We give a new, exact integral expression of Rt for the microscopic narrow Feshbach resonance model. A divergence of Rt in the preefimovian regime at a scaling exponent s = 1/2 is predicted and physically discussed. The analytical results are applied to typical species used in cold atom experiments.
