Abstract

We study the one-dimensional quarter-filled extended Hubbard model with an alternating transfer integral. In the strong-dimerization limit the charge part is described by the quantum Ising model which shows the two-dimensional Ising criticality at the self-dual point, and it is naturally connected to the double-frequency sine--Gordon theory in the weak dimerization. Treating low-lying excitations in finite-size systems, we numerically determine a phase boundary between two types of $4{k}_{\mathrm{F}}$ density-wave states and clarify the ground-state phase diagram. Further, we refer to its relevances to the charge-ordered phase observed in the charge-transfer organic salts.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with an alternating chemical potential

Hiromi Otsuka, Masaaki Nakamura

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with an alternating potential---a model for the charge-transfer organic materials and the ferroelectric perovskites. We numerically determine the global phase diagram of this model using the level-crossing and the phenomenological renormalization-group methods based on the exact diagonalization calculations. Our results support the mechanism of the double phase transitions between Mott and band insulators pointed out by Fabrizio, Gogolin, and Nersesyan [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2014 (1999)]: We confirm the existence of the spontaneously dimerized phase as an intermediate state. Further we provide numerical evidence to check the criticalities on the phase boundaries. Especially, we perform the finite-size-scaling analysis of the excitation gap to show the two-dimensional Ising transition in the charge part. On the other hand, we confirm that the dimerized phase survives in the strong-coupling limit, which is one of the resultants of competition between the ionicity and correlation effects.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. In the first half of the paper, using the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach $(g$-ology) including second-order corrections to the coupling constants, we show that bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for $U\ensuremath{\approx}2V$ in between charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons disfavors the BCDW state and leads to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line. In the second half of the paper, we investigate the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with either additional staggered site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}.$ Although the alternating site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ strongly favors the CDW state (that is, a band insulator), the BCDW state is not destroyed completely and occupies a finite region in the phase diagram. Our result is a natural generalization of the work by Fabrizio, Gogolin, and Nersesyan [Phys. Rev. Lett. $83,$ 2014 (1999)], who predicted the existence of a spontaneously dimerized insulating state between a band insulator and a Mott insulator in the phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model. The bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}$ destroys the SDW state and changes it into the BCDW state (or Peierls insulating state). As a result the phase diagram of the model with $\ensuremath{\delta}$ contains only a single critical line separating the Peierls insulator phase and the CDW phase. The addition of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or $\ensuremath{\delta}$ changes the universality class of the CDW-BCDW transition from the Gaussian transition into the Ising transition.

Quantum critical behavior of the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model

Salvatore R. Manmana, V. Meden, R. M. Noack +1 more

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model. This model is governed by the interplay of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and an alternating one-particle potential. Various many-body energy gaps, the charge-density-wave and bond-order parameters, the electric as well as the bond-order susceptibilities, and the density-density correlation function are calculated using the density-matrix renormalization group method. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture, we investigate systems with open as well as periodic boundary conditions and study the physical properties in different sectors of the phase diagram. A careful finite-size scaling analysis leads to results which give evidence in favor of a scenario with two quantum critical points and an intermediate spontaneously dimerized phase. Our results indicate that the phase transitions are continuous. Using a scaling ansatz we are able to read off critical exponents at the first critical point. In contrast to a bosonization approach, we do not find Ising critical exponents. We show that the low-energy physics of the strong-coupling phase can only partly be understood in terms of the strong-coupling behavior of the ordinary Hubbard model.

Phase diagram of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder

Matthias Vojta C, A. Hübsch, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the quarter-filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V$ using the density matrix renormalization-group technique. The ground state is homogeneous at small $V,$ a ``checkerboard'' charge-ordered insulator at large $V$ and not too small on site Coulomb repulsion U, and is phase separated for moderate or large $V$ and small U. The zero-temperature transition between the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phase is found to be second order. In both the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phases the existence of a spin gap mainly depends on the ratio of interchain to intrachain hopping. In the second part of the paper we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the spin degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling, charge-ordered regime that maps the system onto a frustrated spin chain. The opening of a spin gap is thus connected with spontaneous dimerization.

Tricritical behavior in the extended Hubbard chains

Masaaki Nakamura

Phase diagrams of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor interaction $V)$ at half- and quarter-filling are studied by observing level crossings of excitation spectra using the exact diagonalization. This method is based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory including logarithmic corrections which stem from the renormalization of the Umklapp- and the backward-scattering effects. Using this approach, the phase boundaries are determined with high accuracy, and then the structure of the phase diagram is clarified. At half-filling, the phase diagram consists of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines and one Gaussian transition line in the charge sector, and one spin-gap transition line. This structure reflects the $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry of the electron system. Near the $U=2V$ line, the Gaussian and the spin-gap transitions take place independently from the weak- to the intermediate-coupling region, but these two transition lines are coupled in the strong-coupling region. This result demonstrates existence of a tricritical point and a bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase between charge- and spin-density-wave (CDW, SDW) phases. To clarify this mechanism of the transition, we also investigate effect of a correlated hopping term, which plays a role to enlarge BCDW and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases. At quarter-filling, a similar crossover phenomenon also takes place in the large-$V$ region involving spin-gap and BKT-type metal-insulator transitions.

The Critical Properties of One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Zhiguo Wang, Yumei Zhang, Chen Hong

In the framework of nonperturbative quantum field theory, the critical phenomena of one-dimensional extended Hubbard model (EHM) at half-filling are discussed from weak to intermediate interactions. After the EHM being mapped into two decoupled sine-Gordon models, the ground state phase diagram of the system is derived in an explicit way. It is confirmed that the coexisting phases appear in different interaction regimes which cannot be found by conventional theoretical methods. The diagram shows that there are seven different phase regions in the ground state, which seems not to be the same as previous discussions, especially the boundary between the phase separation and condensed phase regions. The phase transition properties of the model between various phase regions are studied in detail.
