Umklapp Collisions and Center-of-Mass Oscillations of a Trapped Fermi Gas

Abstract

Starting from the Boltzmann equation, we study the center-of-mass oscillation of a harmonically trapped normal Fermi gas in the presence of a one-dimensional periodic potential. We show that for values of the Fermi energy above the first Bloch band the center of mass motion is overdamped in the collisional regime due to umklapp processes. This should be contrasted with the behavior of a superfluid where one instead expects the occurrence of persistent Josephson-like oscillations.

Insulating Behavior of a Trapped Ideal Fermi Gas

Luca Pezzè, Лев П. Питаевский, Augusto Smerzi +7 more

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the center-of-mass motion of an ideal Fermi gas in a combined periodic and harmonic potential. We find a crossover from a conducting to an insulating regime as the Fermi energy moves from the first Bloch band into the band gap of the lattice. The conducting regime is characterized by an oscillation of the cloud about the potential minimum, while in the insulating case the center of mass remains on one side of the potential.

Sound propagation and oscillations of a superfluid Fermi gas in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice

Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari, Giuliano Orso

We develop the hydrodynamic theory of Fermi superfluids in the presence of a periodic potential. The relevant parameters governing the propagation of sound (compressibility and effective mass) are calculated in the weakly interacting BCS limit. The conditions of stability of the superfluid motion with respect to creation of elementary excitations are discussed. We also evaluate the frequency of the center-of-mass oscillation when the superfluid gas is additionally confined by a harmonic trap.

Dipole oscillation of a trapped Bose-Fermi-mixture gas in collisionless and hydrodynamic regimes

Yoji Asano, Shohei Watabe, Tetsuro Nikuni

Dipole oscillation is studied in a normal phase of a trapped Bose-Fermi-mixture gas composed of single-species bosons and single-species fermions. Applying the moment method to the linearized Boltzmann equation, we derive a closed set of equations of motion for the center-of-mass position and momentum of both components. By solving the coupled equations, we reveal the behavior of dipole modes in the transition between the collisionless regime and the hydrodynamic regime. We find that two oscillating modes in the collisionless regime have distinct fates in the hydrodynamic regime: one collisionless mode shows a crossover to a hydrodynamic in-phase mode, and the other collisionless mode shows a transition to two purely damped modes. The temperature dependence of these dipole modes are also discussed.

Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas

Sadhan K. Adhikari

Using the complete numerical solution of a time-dependent three-dimensional mean-field model we study the Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas (SFG) at zero temperature formed in a combined axially-symmetric harmonic plus one-dimensional periodic optical-lattice (OL) potentials after displacing the harmonic trap along the axial OL axis. We study the dependence of Josephson frequency on the strength of the OL potential. The Josephson frequency decreases with increasing strength as found in the experiment of Cataliotti et al. [Science 293, 843 (2001)] for a Bose-Einstein condensate and of the experiment of Pezzè et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 120401 (2004)] for an ideal Fermi gas. We demonstrate a breakdown of Josephson oscillation in the SFG for a large displacement of the harmonic trap. These features of Josephson oscillation of a SFG can be tested experimentally.

Influence of the energy-band structure on ultracold reactive processes in lattices

Hugo Terrier, Jean–Michel Launay, Andrea Simoni

We study theoretically ultracold collisions in quasi-one-dimensional optical traps for bosonic and fermionic reactive molecules in the presence of a periodic potential along the trap axis. Elastic, reactive, and umklapp processes due to nonconservation of the center-of-mass motion are investigated for parameters of relevant experimental interest. The model naturally keeps into account the effect of excited energy bands and is particularly suited for being adapted to rigorous close-coupled calculations. Our formalism shows that a correct derivation of the parameters in tight-binding effective models must include the strong momentum dependence of the coupling constant we predict even for deep lattices.

Effects of collisions against thermal impurities in the dynamics of a trapped fermion gas

P. Capuzzi, Patrizia Vignolo, Federico Toschi +2 more

We present a theoretical study of the dynamical behavior of a gas made of ultracold fermionic atoms, which during their motions can collide with a much smaller number of thermal bosonic impurities. The atoms are confined inside harmonic traps and the interactions between the two species are treated as due to $s$-wave scattering with a negative scattering length modeling the $^{40}\mathrm{K}\penalty1000-\hskip0pt^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ fermion-boson system. We set the fermions into motion by giving a small shift to their trap center and examine two alternative types of initial conditions, referring to (i) a close-to-equilibrium situation in which the two species are at the same temperature (well below the Fermi temperature and well above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature); and (ii) a far-from-equilibrium case in which the impurities are given a Boltzmann distribution of momenta while the fermions are at very low temperatures. The dynamics of the gas is evaluated by the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the one-body distribution functions, supported by some analytical results on the collisional properties of a fermion gas. We find that the trapped gaseous mixture is close to the collisionless regime for values of the parameters corresponding to current experiments, but can be driven towards a collisional regime even without increasing the strength of the interactions, either by going over to heavier impurity masses or by matching the width of the momentum distribution of the impurities to the Fermi momentum of the fermion gas.
