Resonant magnetic mode in superconducting two-leg ladders

Abstract

The spin dynamics of a doped two-leg spin ladder is investigated by numerical techniques. We show that a hole pair-magnon boundstate evolves at finite hole doping into a sharp magnetic excitation below the two-particle continuum. This is supported by a field theory argument based on a $\mathrm{SO}(6)$-symmetric ladder. Similarities and differences with the resonant mode of the high-${T}_{C}$ cuprates are discussed.

Evolution of the spin gap upon doping a 2-leg ladder

Didier Poilblanc, O. Chiappa, José A. Riera +2 more

The evolution of the spin gap of a 2-leg ladder upon doping depends upon the nature of the lowest triplet excitations in a ladder with two holes. Here we study this evolution using various numerical techniques for a $t\ensuremath{-}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}J$ ladder as the next-near-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is varied. We find that depending on the value of ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}},$ the spin gap can evolve continuously or discontinuously and the lowest triplet state can correspond to a magnon, a bound magnon-hole-pair, or two separate quasiparticles. Previous experimental results on the superconducting two-leg ladder ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{14\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{x}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$ are discussed.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange: Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group computations

Guillaume Roux, Steven R. White, Sylvain Capponi +2 more

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low-energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Signatures of Pairing in the Magnetic Excitation Spectrum of Strongly Correlated two-leg Ladders

Alberto Nocera, Nirav Patel, Elbio R. Dagotto +1 more

Magnetic interactions are widely believed to play a crucial role in the microscopic mechanism leading to high critical temperature superconductivity. It is therefore important to study the signatures of pairing in the magnetic excitation spectrum of simple models known to show unconventional superconducting tendencies. Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor $S(\mathbf{k},\ensuremath{\omega})$ of a generalized $t\ensuremath{-}U\ensuremath{-}J$ Hubbard model away from half filling in a two-leg ladder geometry. The addition of $J$ enhances pairing tendencies. We analyze quantitatively the signatures of pairing in the magnetic excitation spectra. We found that the superconducting pair-correlation strength, that can be estimated independently from ground state properties, is closely correlated with the integrated low-energy magnetic spectral weight in the vicinity of $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$. In this wave-vector region, robust spin incommensurate features develop with increasing doping. The branch of the spectrum with rung direction wave vector ${k}_{\mathrm{rung}}=0$ does not change substantially with doping where pairing dominates and thus plays a minor role. We discuss the implications of our results for neutron scattering experiments, where the spin excitation dynamics of hole-doped quasi-one-dimensional magnetic materials can be measured and also address implications for recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments.

Dynamical spin response of doped two-leg Hubbard-like ladders

Fabian H. L. Eßler, Robert Konik

We study the dynamical spin response of doped two-leg Hubbard-like ladders in the framework of a low-energy effective field theory description given by the SO(6) Gross-Neveu model. Using the integrability of the SO(6) Gross-Neveu model, we derive the low energy dynamical magnetic susceptibility. The susceptibility is characterized by an incommensurate coherent mode near $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$ and by broad two excitation scattering continua at other $k$-points. In our computation we are able to estimate the relative weights of these contributions. All calculations are performed using form factor expansions which yield exact low energy results in the context of the SO(6) Gross-Neveu model. To employ this expansion, a number of hitherto undetermined form factors were computed. To do so, we developed a general approach for the computation of matrix elements of semilocal SO(6) Gross-Neveu operators. While our computation takes place in the context of SO(6) Gross-Neveu, we also consider the effects of perturbations away from an SO(6) symmetric model, showing that small perturbations at best quantitatively change the physics.

Two-leg t−J ladder: A mean-field description

Y. L. Lee, Y. W. Lee, Chung‐Yu Mou +1 more

Two-leg $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladders are investigated in the framework of a combination of the phase string formulation and bond-operator representation. We develop a mean-field theory in the strong rung interaction regime, i.e., ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\gg}J,t,$ which provides a unified description of the undoped insulating phase and the low-doping phase---the so-called $C1S0$ phase. Both of them are characterized by the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) order parameter, with gap opened up in all spin excitations. The ground state of the doped phase is intrinsically a superconductor with a d-wave symmetry, which is driven by the RVB correlations. The ground-state energy is in good agreement with numerical results. Phase separation is shown to occur beyond some critical value of $J/t$ for given doping concentration. The local structure of hole pairs as well as the spectra of various spin and charge modes are analyzed in comparison with other approaches.
