Abstract

Using the functional integral formulation of nonequilibrium quantum many-body theory we develop a regular description of a Fermi system with a strong attractive interaction in the presence of an external time-dependent potential. In the strong coupling limit this fermionic system is equivalent to a nonequilibrium dilute Bose gas of diatomic molecules. We also consider nonequilibrium strongly coupled Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and show that it reduces to the full nonlinear time-dependent Gross-Pitaevski equation, which determines the evolution of the condensate wave function.

Bound States and Superfluidity in Strongly Coupled Fermion Systems

GERD RÖPKE

The two-particle spectrum in a dense Fermion system is treated using a thermodynamic Green function approach. A self-consistent description of possible bound states and a superfluid condensate in a correlated medium is given. A detailed understanding of superfluidity and superconductivity in correlated Fermion systems, especially the transition from the Cooper-paired state (weak-coupling limit) to the Bose condensed state of tightly bound pairs of Fermions (strong coupling limit) [1], is of great interest for very different physical systems. The problem of a unified treatment of Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) and the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) phase arises not only in describing the electron structure of strongly correlated electron superfluids such as superconductors [2], the electronhole system in semiconductors [3], spin-polarized hydrogen and liquid He [4], but also in the theory of nuclear matter [5] and quark–gluon systems [6]. Recently, there have been several new approaches to this stimulating problem. A Monte-Carlo simulation of a finite He system at zero temperature has been performed in Ref. [7]. The microscopic theory of strongly coupled quantum fluids has been treated within the Jastrow approximation (cf. Ref. [8]) to obtain the ground state and low-lying excited states of strongly correlated boson quantum fluids. The crossover from weak to strong coupling superconductivity has been considered using a functional integral representation [2] (see also Ref. [7]).

Bound states and superfluidity in strongly coupled Fermion systems

GERD RÖPKE

Abstract The crossover from Bardeen‐Cooper‐Schrieffer pairing to Bose‐Einstein condensation is considered with special emphasis to a consistent description of bound pair formation. A nonequilibrium approach is considered, and wave equations for the two‐particle states and the pair amplitude are derived in the stationary state. The critical temperature is calculated for a simple model system.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where ${k}_{F}|a|⪡1$ with $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit ${k}_{F}a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where ${k}_{F}a>0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Possible Superfluidity of a System of Strongly Interacting Fermions

Leon N. Cooper, Robert L. Mills, Andrew M. Sessler

The possible superfluidity of a system of strongly interacting fermions is investigated on the assumption that an adequate description of the system in its "normal" state is given by independent fermions in a momentum-dependent potential. On the basis of this assumption we have investigated whether a correlated wave function of the form used by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer minimizes the ground-state energy. The nonzero terms in the expectation value of the Hamiltonian contain the modified kinetic energy and the full two-body potential between the fermion pairs. An integral equation is obtained in configuration space for the correlation function between pairs. This integral equation is meaningful even for potentials with hard cores, and a nonzero solution implies the existence of a superfluid state. A variational method is devised which provides a criterion for superfluidity and a lower bound for the transition temperature into the superfluid state. We find that a repulsive hard core does not in principle forbid the existence of a superfluid state, but whereas in the absence of a hard core an attractive two-body potential always leads to a superfluid state at sufficiently low temperatures, in the presence of a repulsive core there appears to be a critical strength of attraction needed to form a superfluid state. When the variational principle is applied to liquid ${\mathrm{He}}^{3}$ or to nuclear matter, it is found for a wide class of trial functions that the system does not become a superfluid.

Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for Condensed Bosons from the Bogoliubov–de Gennes Equations for Superfluid Fermions

P. Pieri, Giancarlo Calvanese Strinati

We derive the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation at zero temperature for condensed bosons, which form as bound-fermion pairs when the mutual fermionic attractive interaction is sufficiently strong, from the strong-coupling limit of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations that describe superfluid fermions in the presence of an external potential. Three-body corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are also obtained by our approach. Our results are relevant to the recent advances with ultracold fermionic atoms in a trap.

Condensate fraction of a two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas

Luca Salasnich

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of fermionic pairs in a two-dimensional uniform two-component Fermi superfluid obtaining an explicit formula for the condensate density as a function of the chemical potential and the energy gap. By using the mean-field extended Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory, we analyze, as a function of the bound-state energy, the off-diagonal long-range order in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state of weakly bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate of strongly-bound molecular dimers.
