Quasi-1D Bose-Einstein condensates in the dimensional crossover regime

Abstract

We study theoretically the dimensional crossover from a three-dimensional elongated condensate to a one-dimensional condensate as the transverse degrees of freedom get frozen by tight confinement, in the limit of small density fluctuations, i.e. for a strongly degenerate gas. We compute analytically the radially integrated density profile at low temperatures using a local density approximation, and study the behavior of phase fluctuations with the transverse confinement. Previous studies of phase fluctuations in trapped gases have either focused on the 3D elongated regimes or on the 1D regime. The present approach recovers these previous results and is able to interpolate between them. We show in particular that in this strongly degenerate limit the shape of the spatial correlation function is insensitive to the transverse regime of confinement, pointing out to an almost universal behavior of phase fluctuations in elongated traps.

Density fluctuations in a very elongated Bose gas : transition towards quasi-bec and 1D-3D crossover

Isabelle Bouchoule, Julien Armijo, T. Jacqmin +1 more

By measuring the density fluctuations in a highly elongated weakly interacting Bose gas, we observe and quantify the transition from the ideal gas to a quasi-condensate regime throughout the dimensional crossover from a purely 1D to an almost 3D gas. We show that that the entire transition region and the dimensional crossover are described surprisingly well by the modified Yang-Yang model. Furthermore, we find that at low temperatures the linear density at the quasi-condensate transition scales according to an interaction-driven scenario of a longitudinally uniform 1D Bose gas, whereas at high temperatures it scales according to the degeneracy-driven critical scenario of transverse condensation of a 3D ideal gas. We also perform measurements of the third moment of atom number fluctuations. We find a positive skewness of the atom number distribution in the ideal gas regime and a reduced skewness compatible with zero in the quasi-condensate regime. For our parameters, the third moment is a thermodynamic quantity whose measurement constitutes a sensitive test of the equation of state and our results are in agreement with a modified Yang-Yang thermodynamic prediction. Moreover, we show that the measured skewness reveals the presence of true three body correlations in the system.

Density fluctuations in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose gas as observed in free expansion

Krzysztof Gawryluk, Mariusz Gajda, Mirosław Brewczyk

We study, within the framework of the classical-field approximation, the density correlations of a weakly interacting expanding Bose gas for the whole range of temperatures across the Bose-Einstein condensation threshold. We focus on elongated quasi-one-dimensional systems where there is a huge discrepancy between the existing theory and experimental results [A. Perrin et al., Nat. Phys. 8, 195 (2012)]. We find that the density correlation function is not reduced for temperatures below the critical one as it is predicted for the ideal gas or for a weakly interacting system within the Bogoliubov approximation. This behavior of the density correlations agrees with the above-mentioned experiment with the elongated system. Although the system was much larger than that studied here, we believe that the behavior of the density correlation function found there is quite generic. Our theoretical study indicates also large density fluctuations in the trap in the quasicondensate regime where only phase fluctuations were expected. We argue that the enhanced density fluctuations can originate in the presence of interactions in the system, or more precisely in the presence of spontaneous dark solitons in the elongated gas at thermal equilibrium.

Dimensional crossover of Bose-Einstein-condensation phenomena in quantum gases confined within slab geometries

Francesco Delfino, Ettore Vicari

We investigate systems of interacting bosonic particles confined within slablike boxes of size ${L}^{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}Z$ with $Z\ensuremath{\ll}L$, at their three-dimensional (3D) Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) transition temperature ${T}_{c}$, and below ${T}_{c}$ where they experience a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition (at ${T}_{\mathrm{BKT}}<{T}_{c}$ depending on the thickness $Z$). The low-temperature phase below ${T}_{\mathrm{BKT}}$ shows quasi-long-range order: the planar correlations decay algebraically as predicted by the 2D spin-wave theory. This dimensional crossover, from a 3D behavior for $T\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{T}_{c}$ to a quasi-2D critical behavior for $T\ensuremath{\lesssim}{T}_{\mathrm{BKT}}$, can be described by a transverse finite-size scaling limit in a slab geometry. Numerical evidence of the $3\mathrm{D}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\mathrm{D}$ dimensional crossover is presented for the Bose-Hubbard model defined in anisotropic ${L}^{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}Z$ lattices with $Z\ensuremath{\ll}L$. We extend this scaling analysis to the case the slab geometry of the gas is effectively realized by a transverse (inhomogeneous) harmonic trap. Finally, we discuss off-equilibrium behaviors arising from slow time variations of the temperature across the BEC transition of gases confined within a slab geometry. We argue that the system develops an off-equilibrium transverse finite-size scaling under these time-dependent protocols.

Phase fluctuations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in low-dimensional geometry

Demascoth Kadio, Mariusz Gajda, Kazimierz Rza̧żewski

We investigate the phase fluctuations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in one- (1D) and three-dimensional (3D) elongated harmonic traps with the help of the numerical simulation using classical field approximation. By calculating the eigenvalues of the one-dimensional single-particle density matrix we show that the phase fluctuations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a 1D system are due to the thermal low-energy excitations. We find that the phase fluctuations depend on the temperature as has been predicted [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3745 (2000), Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 050404 (2001)]. Finally we show that the phase coherence length of a condensate in a harmonic trap depends on the aspect ratio of anisotropy (geometry) of the trap. We determine the border between the 3D and quasi-one-dimensional systems by calculating the phase coherence length of the condensate.
