Abstract

We demonstrate the possibility of creating and controlling an ideal and trimerized optical Kagomé lattice, and study the low temperature physics of various atomic gases in such lattices. In the trimerized Kagomé lattice, a Bose gas exhibits a Mott transition with fractional filling factors, whereas a spinless interacting Fermi gas at 2/3 filling behaves as a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. Finally, a Fermi-Fermi mixture at half-filling for both components represents a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet with a resonating-valence-bond ground state and quantum spin liquid behavior dominated by a continuous spectrum of singlet and triplet excitations. We discuss the method of preparing and observing such a quantum spin liquid employing molecular Bose condensates.

Quantum gases in trimerized kagomé lattices

We study low-temperature properties of atomic gases in trimerized optical kagom\'e lattices. The laser arrangements that can be used to create these lattices are briefly described. We also present explicit results for the coupling constants of the generalized Hubbard models that can be realized in such lattices. In the case of a single-component Bose gas the existence of a Mott insulator phase with fractional numbers of particles per trimer is verified in a mean-field approach. The main emphasis of the paper is on an atomic spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized kagom\'e lattice with two fermions per site. This system is shown to be described by a quantum spin-$1∕2$ model on the triangular lattice with couplings that depend on the bond directions. We investigate this model by means of exact diagonalization. Our key finding is that the system exhibits nonstandard properties of a quantum spin-liquid crystal: it combines planar antiferromagnetic order in the ground state with an exceptionally large number of low-energy excitations. The possibilities of experimental verification of our theoretical results are critically discussed.

We study low temperature properties of a spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized kagomé lattice. The case of two fermions per trimer is described by a quantum spin 1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings depending on the bond directions. Using exact diagonalizations we show that the system exhibits nonstandard properties of a quantum spin-liquid crystal, combining a planar antiferromagnetic order with an exceptionally large number of low-energy excitations.

Quantum Simulation of the Bose-Hubbard Model with Ultracold Atoms in Triangular Optical Superlattices

Thomas H. Barter

Quantum simulation is the study of one quantum mechanical system via analog with another. In this thesis we explore a simple model of interacting bosons on a lattice, known as the Bose-Hubbard model, by experimental investigation of ultracold rubidium atoms in an optical lattice made from laser light. We describe the construction and stabilization of an optical superlattice with threefold symmetry, and its use in studying the Bose-Hubbard model on triangular and trimerized kagome lattices. We study the short range phase coherence of a Mott insulator on the triangular lattice, and develop a scheme to mitigate out-of-equilibrium effects arising from the state preparation. We show the first experimental realization of an optical trimerized kagome lattice for cold atoms, and discuss experiments characterizing this lattice. Finally, we provide evidence for a Mott insulating state with fractional average particle number per site with measurements of the nearest-neighbor phase coherence of strongly interacting atoms in the trimerized kagome lattice.

Fractional Mott insulator-to-superfluid transition of Bose–Hubbard model in a trimerized Kagomé optical lattice

Qi-Hui Chen, Peng Li, Haibin Su

By generalizing the traditional single-site strong coupling expansion approach to a cluster one, we study the zero-temperature phase diagram of bosonic atoms in a trimerized Kagomé optical lattice. Some new features are present in this system. Due to the strong intra-trimer hopping interaction, there will be a new Mott insulator (MI), which is by definition incompressible but with a fractional filling per trimer. This is different from the traditional MI, which has an integral filling and originates only from the repulsive interaction between particles. We investigate the MI-to-superfluid transition and the nature of the fractional MI by calculating the critical exponents of phase transitions and the low-lying energy excitation spectra of quasiparticles (quasihole). We will show how the low-energy properties of this system can be understood qualitatively as a Bose-Hubbard model in triangular lattice from the point of view of the cluster strong coupling expansion. We also discuss how our results are related to experiment by studying the Bragg spectroscopy.

Quantum phase transition of cold atoms trapped in optical lattices

Yao-hua Chen, Wéi Wú, Guo-cai Liu +2 more

We review our recent theoretical advances in phase transition of cold atoms in optical lattices, such as triangular lattice, honeycomb lattice, and Kagomé lattice. By employing the new developed numerical methods called dynamical cluster approximation and cellular dynamical mean-field theory, the properties in different phases of cold atoms in optical lattices are studied, such as density of states, Fermi surface and double occupancy. On triangular lattice, a reentrant behavior of phase translation line between Fermi liquid state and pseudogap state is found due to the Kondo effect. We find the system undergoes a second order Mott transition from a metallic state into a Mott insulator state on honeycomb lattice and triangular Kagomé lattice. The stability of quantum spin Hall phase towards interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin-orbital coupling is systematically discussed. And we investigate the transition from quantum spin Hall insulator to normal insulator in Kagomé lattice which includes a nearest-neighbor intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and a trimerized Hamiltonian. In addition, we propose the experimental protocols to observe these phase transition of cold atoms in optical lattices.

Ultracold atomic Bose and Fermi spinor gases in optical lattices

K. Eckert, Łukasz Zawitkowski, M. J. Leskinen +2 more

We investigate magnetic properties of Mott-insulating phases of ultracold Bose and Fermi spinor gases in optical lattices. We consider in particular the F = 2 Bose gas, and the F = 3/2 and 5/2 Fermi gases. We derive effective spin Hamiltonians for one and two atoms per site and discuss the possibilities of manipulating the magnetic properties of the system using optical Feshbach resonances. We discuss low temperature quantum phases of a Rb-87 gas in the F = 2 hyperfine state, as well as possible realizations of high spin Fermi gases with either Li-6 or Cs-132 atoms in the F = 3/2 state, and with Yb-173 atoms in the F = 5/2 state.
