Relaxation of Bose-condensate oscillations in a mesoscopic system at T=0

Abstract

A general system of nonlinear equations describing the nondissipative evolution of an oscillating Bose condensate is presented. The relaxation of the transverse oscillations of the condensate in a trap of cylindrical symmetry is considered. The evolution is due to the parametric resonance coupling the transverse mode with the longitudinal ones. Nonlinear rescattering in the subsystem of discrete longitudinal modes leads to the suppression of back energy recovery, generating the nondissipative nonmonotonic relaxation of the transverse oscillations of the condensate.

The Damping of the Bose-Condensate Oscillations in a Trap at Zero Temperature

Yu. Kagan, Leonid A. Maksimov

We discuss an existence of the damping for the radial condensate oscillations in a cylindric trap at zero temperature. The damping is a result of the parametric resonance leading to energy transfer from the coherent condensate oscillations to the longitudinal sound waves within a finite frequency interval. The parametric resonance is due to the oscillations of the sound velocity. The triggering amplitudes at zero temperature are associated with the zero-point oscillations.

Damping of trapped Bose-Einstein condensate oscillations at zero temperature

Yu. Kagan, Leonid A. Maksimov

We provide evidence for the zero-temperatuture damping of condensate radial oscillations in the elongated cylindrical trap. The origin of this damping is a parametric resonance leading to an energy transfer from the coherent oscillations of condensate to longitudinal sound waves in certain frequency interval.

Nonlinearities induced by parametric resonance in effectively 1D atomic Bose condensates

Scott Robertson, Florent Michel, Renaud Parentani

We present a numerical study of the dynamical effects following a sudden change of the transverse trapping frequency in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate, which induces periodic oscillations of the radial density. At early times, we observe an exponential growth of the number of resonant longitudinal phonons, in agreement with the predictions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes treatment. We then observe an ordered sequence of phenomena induced by the nonlinearities of the system. The first is a loss of the nonseparability of the resonant phonon pairs. This is followed by the saturation of the exponential growth and a strong depletion of condensed atoms. Notably, these effects are well described by effective one-dimensional dynamics, and are hardly affected by the damping of the radial oscillations. Finally, the atomic spectrum becomes broad, featureless and almost incoherent, in agreement with experimental results. The link between this sequence of events and the preheating scenario in inflationary cosmology is striking, as is the similarity of techniques used to study them.

Parametric Resonance Phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Enhanced Quantum Tunneling of Coherent Matter Pulses

Luca Salasnich

We investigate the quantum tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a optical trap. We show that periodic pulses of coherent matter are emitted from the trap by using an oscillating energy barrier. Moreover, the emitted fraction of condensed atoms strongly increases if the period of oscillation of the height of the energy barrier is in parametric resonance with the period of oscillation of the center of mass of the condensate inside the potential well. Our model is analyzed by numerically solving the nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation which describes the macroscopic wavefunction of Bose condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. The range of validity of NPSE is discussed and compared with that of Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Relaxation, chaos, and thermalization in a three-mode model of a Bose–Einstein condensate

M A Garcia-March, S van Frank, Marie Bonneau +3 more

We study the complex quantum dynamics of a system of many interacting atoms in an elongated anharmonic trap. The system is initially in a Bose–Einstein condensed state, well described by Thomas–Fermi profile in the elongated direction and the ground state in the transverse directions. After a sudden quench to a coherent superposition of the ground and lowest energy transverse modes, quantum dynamics starts. We describe this process employing a three-mode many-body model. The experimental realization of this system displays decaying oscillations of the atomic density distribution. While a mean-field description predicts perpetual oscillations of the atomic density distribution, our quantum many-body model exhibits a decay of the oscillations for sufficiently strong atomic interactions. We associate this decay with the fragmentation of the condensate during the evolution. The decay and fragmentation are also linked with the approach of the many-body model to the chaotic regime. The approach to chaos lifts degeneracies and increases the complexity of the eigenstates, enabling the relaxation to equilibrium and the onset of thermalization. We verify that the damping time and quantum signatures of chaos show similar dependences on the interaction strength and on the number of atoms.
