Collective Rabi Oscillations and Solitons in a Time-Dependent BCS Pairing Problem

Abstract

Motivated by recent efforts to achieve cold fermions pairing, we study the nonadiabatic regime of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state formation. After the interaction is turned on, at times shorter than the quasiparticle energy relaxation time, the system oscillates between the superfluid and normal state. The collective nonlinear evolution of the BCS-Bogoliubov amplitudes u(p), v(p), along with the pairing function Delta, is shown to be an integrable dynamical problem which admits single soliton and soliton train solitons. We interpret the collective oscillations as Bloch precession of Anderson pseudospins, where each soliton causes a pseudospin 2pi Rabi rotation.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

BCS pairing in Fermi systems with N different hyperfine states

Carsten Honerkamp A, Walter Hofstetter

Motivated by the prospect of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in cold fermionic gases we analyze the superfluid phase of three fermionic flavors in the attractive Hubbard model. We show that there are several low-lying collective pairing modes and investigate their damping due to the partially gapless nature of the single-particle spectrum. Furthermore, we analyze how these modes show up in the density response of the system. Apart from the Anderson-Bogoliubov phase mode of the pairing between two flavors, the dynamical structure factor contains signatures of the gapless third flavor. This picture is found to be robust against perturbations that break the global SU(3) symmetry of the Hamiltonian.

Hybrid-pair superfluidity in a strongly driven Fermi gas

Brendan C. Mulkerin, O. Bleu, Cesar R. Cabrera +2 more

We explore the paired superfluid phases of a Fermi gas in the presence of a continuous Rabi drive. We focus on the case where two components are strongly coupled by the drive, forming hybrid superpositions, and interacting with an uncoupled third component. Using a generalized Bardeen- Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) ansatz, we show that there are two coupled superfluid order parameters, and we obtain the associated free energy and quasiparticle excitation spectrum. We find that we can drive BCS-BCS, BCS-Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and BEC-BEC crossovers purely by varying the detuning of the Rabi drive from the bare transition, with the precise crossover depending on the sign of the underlying interactions between the coupled and uncoupled components. We furthermore identify an exotic excited branch which features both normal to BCS superfluid transitions, as well as a BCS-BEC-BCS crossover. Introducing a generalized Thouless criterion, we show that this behavior is reflected in the critical temperature for superfluidity. Our Rabi-coupled scenario also gives possesses additional thermodynamic properties related to the pseudospin of the coupled components, which provide novel signatures of the state of the many-body system. The Rabi-driven Fermi gas thus emerges as a unique platform for engineering and probing a rich array of multi-band superfluid phases.

Collective dipole oscillations in a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the BCS–BEC crossover

Wen Wen, Hui‐jun Li

We present a study for the collective dipole oscillations of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in the ENS experimental setup (Ferrier-Barbut et al 2014 Science 345 1035). The dynamics of the double superfluidity is described by coupled time-dependent order-parameter equations, which are Gross–Pitaevskii equations for the Bose superfluid, coupled to the order-parameter equation including the equation of state fitting from the experimental data for the Fermi superfluid in the BCS–BEC crossover. The numerical simulations show that due to the boson–fermion interaction, the frequencies of the dipole oscillations of the Bose and Fermi superfluids are both downshifted and the frequency shifts increase monotonically from the BCS side to BEC side, which are in agreement with the experiment. We further study the dependencies of the frequency shifts on the oscillation amplitudes and the nonlinear effects, in which the Bose and Fermi superfliuds show different features. The frequency shifts of the Bose superfluid increase linearly as the oscillation amplitudes increase, while the frequency shifts of the Fermi superfluid show a quadratical increase. It is found that the intrinsic dipole oscillations of the Bose (Fermi) superfluid can be triggered by only boosting the Fermi (Bose) superfluid.

Comparative study of quartet superfluid state: Quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and generalized Nambu-Gor'kov formalism

Yixin Guo, Hiroyuki Tajima, Haozhao Liang

We theoretically investigate a quartet superfluid state in fermionic matter by using the quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) variational theory and the Green's function method. We demonstrate that the quartet BCS theory with the multiple-infinite-product ansatz successfully reproduces an exact four-body result in a one-dimensional four-component Fermi gas at the dilute limit, in contrast to the single-infinite-product ansatz. To see the validity of the quartet BCS state, we derive the self-consistent equation for the quartet superfluid order parameter within the generalized imaginary-time Nambu-Gor'kov formalism, which is found to be consistent with the quartet BCS variational equation. Moreover, by numerically computing the momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function in a one-dimensional system, we discuss how the single-particle spectra evolve with increasing the strength of the four-body cluster formation. We show that a coherent BCS-like quasiparticle branch on the weak-coupling side evolves into a strongly damped, continuum-dominated spectrum in the strong-coupling side, while nonzero quartet superfluid order parameter persists throughout the crossover regime. Our results would be useful for understanding beyond-BCS pairing effects and four-body cluster formations in fermionic systems in an interdisciplinary way.

Sudden-quench dynamics of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer states in deep optical lattices

Marlon Nuske, Ludwig Mathey, Eite Tiesinga

We determine the exact dynamics of an initial Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of ultracold atoms in a deep hexagonal optical lattice. The dynamical evolution is triggered by a quench of the lattice potential such that the interaction strength ${U}_{f}$ is much larger than the hopping amplitude ${J}_{f}$. The quench initiates collective oscillations with frequency $|{U}_{f}|/2\ensuremath{\pi}$ in the momentum occupation numbers and imprints an oscillating phase with the same frequency on the BCS order parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$. The oscillation frequency of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ is not reproduced by treating the time evolution in mean-field theory. In our theory, the momentum noise (i.e., density-density) correlation functions oscillate at frequency $|{U}_{f}|/2\ensuremath{\pi}$ as well as at its second harmonic. For a very deep lattice, with zero tunneling energy, the oscillations of momentum occupation numbers are undamped. Nonzero tunneling after the quench leads to dephasing of the different momentum modes and a subsequent damping of the oscillations. The damping occurs even for a finite-temperature initial BCS state, but not for a noninteracting Fermi gas. Furthermore, damping is stronger for larger order parameter and may therefore be used as a signature of the BCS state. Finally, our theory shows that the noise correlation functions in a honeycomb lattice will develop strong anticorrelations near the Dirac point.
