Clustering of Fermi Particles with Arbitrary Spin

Abstract

A single l-shell model is investigated for a system of fermions of spin s and an attractive s-wave, spin channel independent, interaction. The spectra and eigenvectors are determined exactly for different l,s values and particle numbers N. As a generalization of Cooper pairing it is shown that when N=mu(2s+1), mu=1,2,..., 2l+1, the ground state consists of clusters of (2s+1) particles. The relevance of the results for more general situations including the homogeneous system is briefly discussed.

Cluster states of Fermions in the single l-shell model

András Csordás, Szoke, Eva, P. Szépfalusy

The paper concerns the ground state structure of the partly filled l-shell of a fermionic gas of atoms of spin s in a spherically symmetric spin independent trap potential. At particle numbers N=n(2s+1), n=1,2,...,2l+1 the basic building blocks are clusters consisting of (2s+1) atoms, whose wave functions are completely symmetric and antisymmetric in space and spin variables, respectively. The creation operator of a cluster is constructed whose repeated application to the vacuum leads to the multi-cluster state. Ground state energy expressions are derived for the n-cluster states at different l,s values and interpreted in simple terms.

Stability of three-fermion clusters with finite range of attraction

P. E. Kornilovitch

Three quantum particles with on-site repulsion and nearest-neighbour attraction on a one-dimensional lattice are considered. The three-body Schrödinger equation is reduced to a set of single-variable integral equations. Energies of three-particle bound complexes (trions) are found from self-consistency of the approximating matrix equation. In the case of spin- fermions, the ground-state trion energy, the excited-state energies, the trion spectra and stability regions are obtained for total spins S = 1/2 and S = 3/2. In the S = 1/2 sector, a narrow but finite parameter region is identified where the ground state consists of a stable fermion pair and an unbound fermion. Also presented is the reference case of spin-0 bosons.

Cooper pairing and tripling in one-dimensional spinless fermions with attractive two- and three-body forces

Yixin Guo, Hiroyuki Tajima

We theoretically investigate three-body correlations on the top of a Fermi sea in one-dimensional spinless fermions with antisymmetrized two- and three-body attractive interactions. By investigating the variational problem of three-body states above the Fermi sea, we illuminate the fate of the in-medium three-body cluster states (namely, Cooper triples in the presence of Fermi sea) in the special case with pure attractive three-body interaction as well as in the case with the coexistence of two- and three-body interactions. Our results testify that the fermion-dimer repulsion is canceled by including the three-body interactions, and stable three-body clusters can be formed. We further feature a phase diagram consisting of the $p$-wave Cooper pairing and Cooper tripling phases in a plane of $p$-wave two- and three-body coupling strengths.

General pairing interactions and pair truncation approximations for fermions in a single- j shell

Y. M. Zhao, A. Arima, Joseph N. Ginocchio +1 more

We investigate Hamiltonians with attractive interactions between pairs of fermions coupled to angular momentum $J$. We show that pairs with spin $J$ are reasonable building blocks for the low-lying states. For systems with only a $J={J}_{max}$ pairing interaction, eigenvalues are found to be approximately integers for a large array of states, in particular, for those with total angular momenta $I\ensuremath{\leqslant}2j$. For $I=0$ eigenstates of four fermions in a single-$j$ shell we show that there is only one nonzero eigenvalue. We address these observations using the nucleon pair approximation of the shell model and relate our results with a number of currently interesting problems.

Cooper pairing and single-particle properties of trapped Fermi gases

Georg M. Bruun, H. Heiselberg

We calculate the elementary excitations and pairing of a trapped atomic Fermi gas in the superfluid phase. The level spectra and pairing gaps undergo several transitions as the strength of the interactions between atoms and the number of atoms are varied. For weak interactions, the Cooper pairs are formed between particles residing in the same harmonic oscillator shell. In this regime, the nature of the paired state is shown to depend critically on the position of the chemical potential relative to the harmonic oscillator shells and on the size of the mean field. For stronger interactions, we find a region where pairing occur between time-reversed harmonic oscillator states in different shells also.

Ground-state and elemental excitations of the one-dimensional multicomponent Fermi gas with delta -function interaction

P. Schlottmann

We consider a gas of fermions with parabolic dispersion and N spin components (or spin S, N=2S+1) with SU(N) symmetry in one dimension interacting via a delta -function potential. The model is integrable and its solution has been obtained by Sutherland in terms of N nested Bethe ansatze. The ground-state Bethe ansatz integral equations are solved numerically for both repulsive and attractive interactions to obtain the energy, the chemical potential, and the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the band filling and the interaction strength. For the repulsive interaction the Fermi gas has the properties of a Luttinger liquid. In the attractive case, on the other hand, the fermions in the ground-state form bound states of up to N fermions of different spin components. The spectrum of elemental charge and spin excitations is derived for the repulsive and attractive situations. The spectrum is discussed in the limits of vanishing interaction strength and very strong coupling. For the repulsive interaction the low-lying charge excitations can be characterized by the Fermi momentum and the Fermi velocity. The range of the spin-wave excitations is correlated with the Fermi momentum of the charges. The spin wave velocity is inversely proportional to the magnetic susceptibility. The spin-wave excitations become soft in the infinite-repulsive-coupling limit. In the attractive case in zero field all excitation branches except that of bound states of N fermions have an energy gap. It requires a finite energy to break these bound states and hence there is no response to a field smaller than a critical field. The low-T specific heat is proportional to the temperature.
