Abstract

We study the critical line of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field by means of a finite-size analysis of results obtained by transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo techniques. We compare the shape of the critical line with predictions of two different theoretical scenarios. Both scenarios, while plausible, involve assumptions. The first scenario is based on the generalization of the model to a vertex model, and the assumption that the exact analytic form of the critical manifold of this vertex model is determined by the zeroes of an O(2) gauge-invariant polynomial in the vertex weights. However, it is not possible to fit the coefficients of such polynomials of orders up to 10, such as to reproduce the numerical data for the critical points. The second theoretical prediction is based on the assumption that a renormalization mapping exists of the Ising model on the Coulomb gas, and analysis of the resulting renormalization equations. It leads to a shape of the critical line that is inconsistent with the first prediction, but consistent with the numerical data.

Critical frontier of the antiferromagnetic Ising model in a magnetic field: The honeycomb lattice

Fa Yueh Wu, X. N. Wu, Henk W. J. Blöte

A closed-form expression is proposed for the critical frontier, or the critical line, of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the honeycomb lattice in a nonzero external magnetic field. We formulate the Ising model as an 8-vertex model and identify the critical frontier as a locus invariant under a generalized weak-graph transformation. In its simplest form the locus is an expression containing two unknown constants which we determine numerically. The resulting critical frontier lies very close to results of a finite-size analysis.

Antiferromagnetic triangular Ising model: Critical behavior of the ground state

Henk W. J. Blöte, M. P. Nightingale

The critical ground state of the antiferromagnetic triangular Ising model is studied with finite-size scaling, with the use of exact techniques and numerical transfer-matrix methods. Exact solution of the model in zero field yields a conformal anomaly equal to 1, and values of critical exponents. For nonzero fields, dominant eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are computed for systems with linear dimensions up to 27 with the use of an efficient coding of spin states as a system of nonintersecting strings. The results are in perfect agreement with the Gaussian-model--Coulomb-gas scenario proposed by Nienhuis et al. for this model. Quantitative agreement is found with the predictions for exponents of spin-wave and vortex operators. Furthermore, we locate the field-induced Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to a long-range-ordered state at a field ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}}$=0.266\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010.

Triangular Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a field

Xiaofeng Qian, Henk W. J. Blöte

The authors study the Ising model on the triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor couplings K(nn) , next-nearest-neighbor couplings K(nnn) >0 , and a magnetic field H . This work is done by means of finite-size scaling of numerical results of transfer matrix calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the phase diagram and confirm the character of the critical manifolds. The emphasis of this work is on the antiferromagnetic case K(nn) <0 , but we also explore the ferromagnetic regime K(nn) >/=0 for H=0 . For K(nn) <0 and H=0 we locate a critical phase presumably covering the whole range -infinity< K(nn) <0 . For K(nn) <0 , H not equal 0 we locate a plane of phase transitions containing a line of tricritical three-state Potts transitions. In the limit H-->infinity this line leads to a tricritical model of hard hexagons with an attractive next-nearest-neighbor potential.

Accurate determination of the critical line of the square Ising antiferromagnet in a field

Henk W. J. Blöte, Xue-N Wu

Several points on the critical line of the simple quadratic antiferromagnetic Ising model in a field are located with high precision. This is accomplished by means of finite-size scaling of the magnetic correlation length of n* infinity strips. The latter quantities were determined by means of the transfer matrix method for strip widths up to n=20. An expression, possibly with the exact form, is constructed which reproduces the critical line with an accuracy to the order of 10 -10 .

Critical line of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet in a field from a C3 -symmetric corner transfer matrix algorithm

Samuel Nyckees, Afonso Rufino, Frédéric Mila +1 more

The corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) algorithm has been extensively used to investigate both classical and quantum two-dimensional (2D) lattice models. The convergence of the algorithm can strongly vary from model to model depending on the underlying geometry and symmetries, and the presence of algebraic correlations. An important factor in the convergence of the algorithm is the lattice symmetry, which can be broken due to the necessity of mapping the problem onto the square lattice. We propose a variant of the CTMRG algorithm, designed for models with C_{3}-symmetry, which we apply to the conceptually simple yet numerically challenging problem of the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet in a field, at zero and low temperatures. We study how the finite-temperature three-state Potts critical line in this model approaches the ground-state Kosterlitz-Thouless transition driven by a reduced field (h/T). In this particular instance, we show that the C_{3}-symmetric CTMRG leads to much more precise results than both existing results from exact diagonalization of transfer matrices and Monte Carlo.

CRITICAL POINT OF THE HONEYCOMB ANTIFERROMAGNETIC ISING MODEL IN A NONZERO MAGNETIC FIELD: FINITE-SIZE ANALYSIS

Henk W. J. Blöte, Fa Yueh Wu, X. N. Wu

In this paper we present highly accurate numerical results of the determination of the critical point of the antiferromagnetic Ising model in a nonzero magnetic field for the honeycomb lattice, including the critical fugacity of a nearest-neighbor exclusion lattice gas. We compute the correlation length of the Ising model using a transfer matrix approach, and locate the critical point from the data on the correlation lengths using finite-size analysis. For the purpose of a maximum numerical accuracy, the analysis is carried out by taking transfer matrices proceeding in two perpendicular directions of the lattice.
