Abstract

We calculate the uniform and staggered susceptibilities of two-chain spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg ladders using Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the gap extracted from the uniform susceptibility and the saturation value of the staggered susceptibility are independent of the sign of the interchain coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ in the asymptotic limit $|{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}|/\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{J}0.$ Furthermore, we examine the existence of logarithmic corrections to the linear scaling of the gap with $|{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}|.$

Susceptibility and low-temperature thermodynamics of spin-½ Heisenberg ladders

Beat Frischmuth, Beat Ammon, Matthias Troyer

The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility and the ground-state energy of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders with up to six legs has been calculated, using the Monte Carlo loop algorithm. The susceptibilities of even-leg ladders show spin gaps while those of odd-leg ladders remain finite in the zero-temperature limit. For small ratios of intra- to interleg couplings, odd-leg ladders can be mapped at low temperatures to single chains. For equal couplings, the logarithmic corrections at low temperatures increase markedly with the number of legs.

Quantum spin ladders atT=0 and at high temperatures studied by series expansions

J. Oitmaa, Rajiv R. P. Singh, Weihong Zheng

We have carried out extensive series studies, at T=0 and at high temperatures, of two-chain and three-chain spin-half ladder systems with antiferromagnetic intrachain and both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interchain couplings. Our results confirm the existence of a gap in the two-chain Heisenberg ladders for all nonzero values of the interchain couplings. Complete dispersion relations for the spin-wave excitations are computed. For three-chain systems, our results are consistent with a gapless spectrum. We also calculate the uniform magnetic susceptibility and specific heat as a function of temperature. We find that as T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0, for the two-chain system the uniform susceptibility goes rapidly to zero, whereas for the three-chain system it approaches a finite value. These results are compared in detail with previous studies of finite systems. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Thermodynamic properties of disordered quantum spin ladders

Erol Vatansever, Georgi Georgiev Grahovski, Nikolaos G. Fytas

Abstract In this paper, we study the thermodynamic properties of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders by means of the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo technique. This includes the thermal properties of the specific heat, uniform and staggered susceptibilities, spin gap, and structure factor. Our numerical simulations are probed over a large ensemble of random realizations in a wide range of disorder strengths r, from the clean ( $$r=0$$ r = 0 ) case up to the diluted ( $$r \rightarrow 1$$ r → 1 ) limit, and for selected choices of number of legs $$L_y$$ L y per site. Our results show some interesting phenomena, like the presence of crossing points in the temperature plane for both the specific heat and uniform susceptibility curves which appear to be universal in r, as well as a variable dependence of the spin gap in the amount of disorder upon increasing $$L_y$$ L y . Semiclassical description of spin ladders

David Sénéchal

The Heisenberg spin ladder is studied in the semiclassical limit, via a mapping to the nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma} model. Different treatments are needed if the interchain coupling K is small, intermediate, or large. For intermediate coupling a single nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma} model is used for the ladder. It predicts a spin gap for all nonzero values of K if the sum s+s\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{} of the spins of the two chains is an integer, and no gap otherwise. For small K, a better treatment proceeds by coupling two nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma} models, one for each chain. For integer s=s\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}, the saddle point approximation predicts a sharp drop in the gap as K increases from zero. A Monte Carlo simulation of a spin-1 ladder is presented which supports the analytical results.

Low-energy properties of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders with an odd number of legs

Beat Frischmuth, Stephan Haas, Germán Sierra +1 more

An effective low-energy description for multileg spin- Heisenberg ladders with an odd number of legs is proposed. Using a recently developed Monte Carlo loop algorithm and exact-diagonalization techniques, the uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibility and the entropy are calculated for ladders with one, three, and five legs. These systems show a low-temperature scaling behavior similar to spin- chains with longer ranged unfrustrated exchange interactions. The spinon velocity does not change as the number of legs increases, but the energy scale parameter decreases markedly.

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders in staggered magnetic field

Jize Zhao, Xiaoqun Wang, Tao Xiang +4 more

We study the low-energy excitations of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and $N$-leg $(N=2,3,4)$ ladders in a staggered magnetic field ${h}_{s}$. We show that ${h}_{s}$ induces gap and midgap states in all the cases and we will examine their field scaling behavior. A modified boundary scheme is devised to extract accurate bulk excitation behavior. The gap values converge rapidly as $N$ increases, leading to a field scaling exponent $\ensuremath{\gamma}=\frac{1}{2}$ for both the longitudinal and transverse gaps of the square lattice $(N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty})$. The midgap states induced by the boundary edge effects share the bulk gap scaling exponents but their overall scaling behavior in the large-$N$ limit needs further investigation.
