Heat capacity of a two-component superfluid Fermi gas

Abstract

We investigate mean-field effects in two-component trapped Fermi gases in the superfluid phase, in the vicinity of s-wave Feshbach resonances. Within the resonance superfluidity approach (Holland et al 2001 Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 120406) we calculate the ground state energy and the heat capacity as functions of temperature. Heat capacity is analysed for different trap aspect ratios. We find that trap anisotropy is an important factor in determining both the value of heat capacity near the transition temperature and the transition temperature itself.

Thermodynamics of a trapped unitary Fermi gas

R. Haussmann, W. Zwerger

Thermodynamic properties of an ultracold Fermi gas in a harmonic trap are calculated within a local density approximation, using a conserving many-body formalism for the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensate crossover problem, which has been developed by Haussmann et al. [Phys. Rev. A 75, 023610 (2007)]. We focus on the unitary regime near a Feshbach resonance and determine the local density and entropy profiles and the global entropy $S(E)$ as a function of the total energy $E$. Our results are in good agreement with both experimental data and previous analytical and numerical results for the thermodynamics of the unitary Fermi gas. The value of the Bertsch parameter at $T=0$ and the superfluid transition temperature, however, differ appreciably. We show that, well in the superfluid regime, removal of atoms near the cloud edge enables cooling far below temperatures that have been reached so far.

Equilibrium and dynamics of a trapped superfluid Fermi gas with unequal masses

Giuliano Orso, Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

Interacting Fermi gases with equal populations but unequal masses are investigated at zero temperature using local density approximation and the hydrodynamic theory of superfluids in the presence of harmonic trapping. We derive the conditions of energetic stability of the superfluid configuration with respect to phase separation and the frequencies of the collective oscillations in terms of the mass ratio and the trapping frequencies of the two components. We discuss the behavior of the gas after the trapping potential of a single component is switched off and show that, near a Feshbach resonance, the released component can still remain trapped due to many-body interaction effects. Explicit predictions are presented for a mixture of $^{6}\text{L}\text{i}$ and $^{40}\text{K}$ with resonant interaction.

Viscosity and thermal relaxation for a resonantly interacting Fermi gas

Georg M. Bruun, H. Smith

The viscous and thermal relaxation rates of an interacting fermion gas are calculated as functions of temperature and scattering length, using a many-body scattering matrix which incorporates medium effects due to Fermi blocking of intermediate states. These effects are demonstrated to be large close to the transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ to the superfluid state. For a homogeneous gas in the unitarity limit, the relaxation rates are increased by nearly an order of magnitude compared to their value obtained in the absence of medium effects due to the Cooper instability at ${T}_{c}$. For trapped gases the corresponding ratio is found to be about three due to the averaging over the inhomogeneous density distribution. The effect of superfluidity below ${T}_{c}$ is considered to leading order in the ratio between the energy gap and the transition temperature.

Heat Capacity of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas

Joseph M. Kinast, Andrey V. Turlapov, John E. Thomas +3 more

We have measured the heat capacity of an optically trapped, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms. A precise addition of energy to the gas is followed by single-parameter thermometry, which determines the empirical temperature parameter of the gas cloud. Our measurements reveal a clear transition in the heat capacity. The energy and the spatial profile of the gas are computed using a theory of the crossover from Fermi to Bose superfluids at finite temperatures. The theory calibrates the empirical temperature parameter, yields excellent agreement with the data, and predicts the onset of superfluidity at the observed transition point.

Superfluid-normal quantum phase transitions in an imbalanced Fermi gas

Heron Caldas

Abstract We investigate the superfluid-to-normal zero temperature quantum phase transitions of asymmetric two-component Fermi gases as a function of the chemical potential imbalance h . The calculations are performed for homogeneous and trapped imbalanced systems. We concentrate at unitarity, characterized by a divergent interaction parameter k F a , where most of the current experiments are realized. For homogeneous systems, we determine the critical chemical potential imbalance h c at which possible phase transitions occur. In the case of trapped gases, we show how h c can be consistently determined from experimental observations.

Superfluid transition temperature in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance

Yutaro OHASHI, Adam Griffin

We investigate strong-coupling effects on the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance describes a composite quasiboson that can give rise to an additional pairing interaction between the Fermi atoms. This attractive interaction becomes stronger as the threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}$ of the Feshbach resonance two-particle bound state is lowered. In a recent paper, we showed that in the uniform Fermi gas, this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to a crossover from a BCS state to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink kind, in which the BCS-type superfluid phase transition continuously changes into the BEC type as the threshold energy is decreased. In this paper, we extend our previous work by including the effect of a harmonic trap potential, treated within the local-density approximation. We also give results for both weak and strong coupling to the Feshbach resonance. We show that the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon strongly modifies the shape of the atomic density profile at the superfluid phase-transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}},$ reflecting the change of the dominant particles going from Fermi atoms to composite bosons. In the BEC regime, these composite bosons are shown to first appear well above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}.$ We also discuss the ``phase diagram'' above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ as a function of the tunable threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}.$ We introduce a characteristic temperature ${T}^{*}(2\ensuremath{\nu})$ describing the effective crossover in the normal phase from a Fermi gas of atoms to a gas of stable molecules.
