Exclusion statistics of quasiparticles in condensed states of composite fermion excitations

arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

The exclusion statistics of quasiparticles is found at any level of the hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations (for which experimental indications have recently been found). The hierarchy of condensed states of excitations in boson Jain states is introduced and the statistics of quasiparticles is found. The quantum Hall states of charged $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ anyons $(\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is the exclusion statistics parameter) can be described as incompressible states of $(\ensuremath{\alpha}+2p)$ anyons $(2p$ is an even number).

Quantum Hall Systems: Braid groups, composite fermions, and fractional charge

Lucjan Jacak, Piotr Sitko, Konrad Wieczorek +1 more

The book presents the wide range of topics in two-dimensional physics of quantum Hall systems, especially fractional quantum Hall states. It starts with the fundamental problems of quantum statistics in two dimensions and the corresponding braid group formalism. The braid group formalism of anyons (previously known) is developed for composite fermions. The main formalism used in many-body quantum Hall theories -- the Chern-Simons theory is also presented. The Chern-Simons theory of anyons (particles obeying fractional statistics) and composite fermions (related to Hall systems) is given, in detail. Numerical studies, which play the important role in quantum Hall theories, are presented for spherical systems (Haldane sphere). The composite fermion theory is tested in numerical studies. The concept of the hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations is introduced (in analogy to the Haldane hierarchy)1). The hierarchies of odd-denominator states and even-denominator states are presented. The BCS paired Hall state is also discussed. The introduction into multi-component quantum Hall systems and spin quantum Hall systems is sketched. 1)First condensed states of composite fermion excitations have been very recently confirmed in the experiment (Pan et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 016801). a sample of this book is available at http://www.oup.co.uk/isbn/0-19-852870-1

Exclusion statistics for fractional quantum Hall states on a sphere

SERGEI B. ISAKOV, Geoffrey Canright, M. D. Johnson

We discuss exclusion statistics parameters for quasiholes and quasielectrons excited above the fractional quantum Hall states near \ensuremath{\nu}=p/(2np+1). We derive the diagonal statistics parameters from the (``unprojected'') composite fermion (CF) picture. We propose values for the off-diagonal (mutual) statistics parameters as a simple modification of those obtained from the unprojected CF picture, by analyzing finite system numerical spectra in the spherical geometry.

Numerical demonstration of Abelian fractional statistics of composite fermion excitations in the spherical geometry

Koyena Bose, Ajit Coimbatore Balram

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids host quasiparticle excitations that carry a fraction of the electronic charge. Moreover, in contrast to bosons and fermions that carry exchange statistics of 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ respectively, these quasiparticles of FQH fluids, when braided around one another, can accumulate a Berry phase, which is a fractional multiple of $\ensuremath{\pi}$. Deploying the spherical geometry, we numerically demonstrate that composite fermion particle (CFP) excitations in the Jain FQH states carry Abelian fractional statistics. Previously, the exchange statistics of CFPs were studied in the disk geometry, where the statistics get obscured due to a shift in the phase arising from the addition of another CFP, making its determination cumbersome without prior knowledge of the shift. We show that on the sphere this technical issue can be circumvented and the statistics of CFPs can be obtained more transparently. The ideas we present can be extended to determine the statistics of quasiparticles arising in certain non-Abelian partonic FQH states.

Exclusion Statistics for Non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

Kareljan Schoutens

We determine the exclusion statistics properties of the fundamental edge quasiparticles over a specific $\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\frac{1}{2}$ non-Abelian quantum Hall state known as the $q\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2$ Pfaffian state. The fundamental excitations are the edge electrons of charge $\ensuremath{-}e$ and the edge quasiholes of charge $+e/4$. We explicitly determine thermodynamic distribution functions and establish a duality which generalizes the duality for fractional exclusion statistics as described by F. D. M. Haldane.

Fractional Statistics

Martin Greiter, Frank A. Wilczek

The quantum-mechanical description of assemblies of particles whose motion is confined to two (or one) spatial dimensions offers many possibilities that are distinct from bosons and fermions. We call such particles anyons. The simplest anyons are parameterized by an angular phase parameter $θ$. $θ= 0, π$ correspond to bosons and fermions respectively; at intermediate values we say that we have fractional statistics. In two dimensions, $θ$ describes the phase acquired by the wave function as two anyons wind around one another counterclockwise. It generates a shift in the allowed values for the relative angular momentum. Composites of localized electric charge and magnetic flux associated with an abelian U(1) gauge group realize this behavior. More complex charge-flux constructions can involve non-abelian and product groups acting on a spectrum of allowed charges and fluxes, giving rise to nonabelian and mutual statistics. Interchanges of non-abelian anyons implement unitary transformations of the wave function within an emergent space of internal states. Anyons of all kinds are described by quantum field theories that include Chern--Simons terms. The crossings of one-dimensional anyons on a ring are uni-directional, such that a fractional phase $θ$ acquired upon interchange gives rise to fractional shifts in the relative momenta between the anyons. The quasiparticle excitations of fractional quantum Hall states have long been predicted to include anyons. Recently the anyon behavior predicted for quasiparticles in the $ν= 1/3$ fractional quantum Hall state has been observed both in scattering and in interferometric experiments. Excitations within designed systems, notably including superconducting circuits, can exhibit anyon behavior. Such systems are being developed for possible use in quantum information processing.
