General solutions for multispin two-time correlation and response functions in the Glauber–Ising chain

Abstract

The kinetic Glauber–Ising spin chain is one of the very few exactly solvable models of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, existing solutions do not yield tractable expressions for two-time correlation and response functions of observables involving products of more than one or two spins. We use a new approach to solve explicitly the full hierarchy of differential equations for the correlation and response functions. From this general solution follow closed expressions for arbitrary multispin two-time correlation and response functions, for the case where the system is quenched from equilibrium at T i > 0 to some arbitrary T ⩾ 0. By way of application, we give the results for two- and four-spin two-time correlation and response functions. From the standard mapping, these also imply new exact results for two-time particle correlation and response functions in one-dimensional diffusion limited annihilation.

On the dynamics of the Ising model (master equation/spin correlation functions/hierarchy of correlation e

Elliott W. Montroll

A two-dimensional (and to some degree three-di- mensional) version of Glauber's one-dimensional relaxation model is described. The model is constructed to yield the Ising model of cooperative phenomena at equilibrium. A complete hi- erarchy of differential equations for multispin correlation func- tions is constructed. Some remarks are made concerning the solu- tion of them for the initial value problem of determining the relaxation of an initial set of distributions. Investigations of the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of the Ising model have expanded our intuition on the general na- ture of phase transitions. They have also provided an accurate representation of the behavior of certain real systems well char- acterized by the model. Dynamical models of cooperative phe- nomena have proven harder to develop. Glauber (1) introduced an interesting master equation for the dynamics of the Ising spin variables on a one-dimensional chain. This equation is constructed so that the spin-flipping process at a given time is determined by two competing influences: (i) temperature ef- fects which at higher temperatures tend to randomize the sys- tem, and (ii) correlation effects of a given with its neighbors which tend to align a given with its neighbors. Although some literature has been generated for the investigation of two- dimensional and three-dimensional generalizations of the Glauber model (cf. Kawasaki (2) and Matsudaira (3, 4)), a de- tailed analysis of the appropriate hierarchy of rate equations for the dynamics of correlation functions has not yet been given. The purpose of this report is to make a contribution to such a program.

Stationary correlations for a far-from-equilibrium spin chain

B. Schmittmann, Frank Schmüser

A kinetic one-dimensional Ising model on a ring evolves according to a generalization of Glauber rates, such that spins at even (odd) lattice sites experience a temperature T(e) (T(o)). Detailed balance is violated so that the spin chain settles into a nonequilibrium stationary state, characterized by multiple interactions of increasing range and spin order. We derive the equations of motion for arbitrary correlation functions and solve them to obtain an exact representation of the steady state. Two nontrivial amplitudes reflect the sublattice symmetries; otherwise, correlations decay exponentially, modulo the periodicity of the ring. In the long-chain limit, they factorize into products of two-point functions, in precise analogy to the equilibrium Ising chain. The exact solution confirms the expectation, based on simulations and renormalization group arguments, that the long-time, long-distance behavior of this two-temperature model is Ising-like, in spite of the apparent complexity of the stationary distribution.

Time-Dependent Ising Model with Long Range Interaction

Kyozi Kawasaki, 知司 山田

A systematic method is developed for studying the time-dependent Ising model proposed by Glauber and extended by others. The graphical technique developed for the equilibrium statistical mechanics has been found to be useful in this nonequilibrium problem as well with some modifications. A hierarchy of equations linking various spin cluster functions is obtained. If we choose as the expansion parameter the reciprocal range of the spin interaction which is taken to be of Kac's type, the hierarchy is terminated, and closed sets of nonlinear kinetic equations satisfied by spin cluster functions follow. The dynamical susceptibility is studied using the hierachy, and the polydispersive nature of the spin relaxation is found to be closely connected to the deviation of the spin pair correlation from the Ornstein-Zernike form via multi-spin cluster functions. A sum rule on the distribution of relaxation times is found, which provides a precise expression for the critical slowing-down at the Curie point. The closed set of kinetic equations involving at most three spin cluster functions is used to evaluate explicitly the approximate dynamical susceptibility above the Curie point, and the characteristic time-scale of the polydispersive relaxation is found to increase indefinitely near the Curie point.

The inverse Ising problem for one-dimensional chains with arbitrary finite-range couplings

Giacomo Gori, Andrea Trombettoni

We study Ising chains with arbitrary multispin finite-range couplings, providing an explicit solution of the associated inverse Ising problem, i.e. the problem of inferring the values of the coupling constants from the correlation functions. As an application, we reconstruct the couplings of chain Ising Hamiltonians having exponential or power-law two-spin plus three- or four-spin couplings. The generalization of the method to ladders and to Ising systems where a mean-field interaction is added to general finite-range couplings is also discussed.

Non-universal dynamics of staggered non-equilibrium particle systems and Ising chains

Robin B. Stinchcombe, Santos, Jaime E., Grynberg, Marcelo Daniel

Non-universal dynamics is shown to occur in a one-dimensional non-equilibrium system of hard-core particles. The stochastic processes included are pair creation and annihilation (with rates e and e') and symmetric hopping rates which alternate from one bond to the next (Pa, Pb). A dynamical scaling relation between the relaxation time and the correlation length in the steady state is derived in a simple way for the case e' > Pa >> Pb >> e. We find that the dynamical exponent takes the non-universal value z = 2 ln(e'/e) / ln[(Pb e')/(Pa e)]. For the special condition e + e'= Pa + Pb, where the stochastic system is in principle soluble by reduction to a free fermion system, the model is mapped to the Glauber dynamics of an Ising chain with alternating ferromagnetic bonds of values J1 and J2, in contact with a quantum thermal bath. The full time dependence of the space-dependent magnetization and of the equal time spin-spin correlation function are studied by writing the master equation for this system in the quantum Hamiltonian formalism. In particular we obtain the dispersion relations and rigorously confirm the results obtained for the correlation length and for the dynamical exponent.
