Logarithmic corrections to the Ising model free energy on lattices with conical singularities

Abstract

The free energy of a two-dimensional system at criticality has in general a universal part proportional to the logarithm of the system size. This term was shown by Cardy and Peschel to be related to the curvature of the system, with smooth metrics and singular points contributing in distinct ways. In this paper we present a numerical study of the effect for the Ising model on lattices with various topologies ranging sphere to genus two surfaces. The nature of this term for specific lattice models is an open problem because the distinction between the two kinds of contributions involves an interchange of the limit of singular curvature with the thermodynamic limit. For all the lattices studied we found precise agreement with the conformal field theory prediction for conical singularities.

The Ising model on curved lattices

Ruben Costa-Santos

We review recent results concerning finite size corrections to the Ising model free energy on lattices with non-trivial topology and curvature. From conformal field theory considerations two distinct universal terms are expected, a logarithmic term determined by the system curvature and a scale invariant term determined by the system shape and topology. Both terms have been observed numerically, using the Kasteleyn Pfaffian method, for lattices with topologies ranging from the sphere to that of a genus two surface. The constant term is shown to be expressible in terms of Riemann theta functions while the logarithmic correction reproduces the theoretical prediction by Cardy and Peschel for singular metrics.

Finite-size scaling and conformal anomaly of the Ising model in curved space

J. González

We study the finite-size scaling of the free energy of the Ising model on lattices with the topology of the tetrahedron and the octahedron. Our construction allows us to perform changes in the length scale of the model without altering the distribution of the curvature in the space. We show that the subleading contribution to the free energy follows a logarithmic dependence, in agreement with the conformal field theory prediction. The conformal anomaly is given by the sum of the contributions computed at each of the conical singularities of the space, except when perfect order of the spins is precluded by frustration in the model.

Critical behavior of the two-dimensional Ising model with a slit

Xintian Wu

The two-dimensional Ising model with a slit is studied. The slit free energy is defined, in which the bulk term, edge terms, and corner terms other than that of the slit are canceled. The bond propagation algorithm is used to calculate the free energy, internal energy, and heat capacity numerically. At the critical point, the slit free energy has a logarithmic correction L^{-1}lnL, in addition to the correction lnL, where L is the typical length of the system. The fitted coefficients of these terms agree with the conformal field theory very well. The integral constant and extrapolation length, which are pending in the conformal field theory, are obtained. In the slit internal energy, the leading term is proportional to L. There is a correction term, ln^{2}L, that has a geometry-independent coefficient, the exact value of which is conjectured to be -sqrt[2]/(2π^{2}). The leading term in the slit heat capacity is proportional to L^{2}. There is also a ln^{2}L term; however, its coefficient depends on the geometry. In the infinitely long strip limit, its exact value is conjectured to be 5/π^{2}. Near the critical point, for different size lattices, the rescaled slit free energies, internal energies, and heat capacities collapse onto the corresponding universal curves. According to the scaling and conformal field theory, the leading term of the slit free energy should be -c/8ln|t| for L|t|≫1 and |t|≪1, where t is the reduced temperature. The amplitude c/8 is universal, and c is the central charge. Our results validate these predictions qualitatively. For L|t|≫1 and |t|≪1, the slit internal energy and heat capacity scale as t^{-1} and t^{-2}, respectively.

Universal size dependence of the free energy of finite systems near criticality

Vladimir Privman A

A scaling framework is developed for the emergence of the universal finite-size correction $\frac{(u\mathrm{ln}L)}{{L}^{2}}$, recently found by Cardy and Peschel in the free-energy density of the two-dimensional (2D) conformally invariant models at ${T}_{c}$. Our approach applies in the critical region $T\ensuremath{\simeq}{T}_{\mathrm{cZ}}$, and accounts for the universality of $u$, but not its value. We predict a similar universal term, $\frac{(u\mathrm{ln}L)}{{L}^{3}}$, in 3D. We also find that the "corner" free energy in the bulk ($L=\ensuremath{\infty}$) has the leading singular behavior ($\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\nu}u\mathrm{ln}|t|$).

The square lattice Ising model on the rectangle II: finite-size scaling limit

Alfred Hucht

Abstract Based on the results published recently (Hucht 2017 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor . 50 065201), the universal finite-size contributions to the free energy of the square lattice Ising model on the L × M rectangle, with open boundary conditions in both directions, are calculated exactly in the finite-size scaling limit L , M → ∞ , T → T c , with fixed temperature scaling variable x ∝ ( T / T c − 1 ) M and fixed aspect ratio ρ ∝ L / M . We derive exponentially fast converging series for the related Casimir potential and Casimir force scaling functions. At the critical point T = T c we confirm predictions from conformal field theory (Cardy and Peschel 1988 Nucl. Phys . B 300 377, Kleban and Vassileva 1991 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen . 24 3407). The presence of corners and the related corner free energy has dramatic impact on the Casimir scaling functions and leads to a logarithmic divergence of the Casimir potential scaling function at criticality.

Shape-dependent finite-size effect of the critical two-dimensional Ising model on a triangular lattice

Xintian Wu, N. Sh. Izmailian, Wenan Guo

Using a bond-propagation algorithm, we study the finite-size behavior of the critical two-dimensional Ising model on a finite triangular lattice with free boundaries in five shapes: triangular, rhomboid, trapezoid, hexagonal, and rectangular. The critical free energy, internal energy, and specific heat are calculated. The accuracy of the free energy reaches 10(-26). Based on accurate data on several finite systems with linear size up to N=2000, we extract the bulk, surface, and corner parts of the free energy, internal energy, and specific heat accurately. We confirm the conformal field theory prediction that the corner free energy is universal and find logarithmic corrections in higher-order terms in the critical free energy for the rhomboid, trapezoid, and hexagonal systems, which are absent for the triangular and rectangular systems. The logarithmic edge corrections due to edges parallel or perpendicular to the bond directions in the internal energy are found to be identical, while the logarithmic edge corrections due to corresponding edges in the specific heat are different. The corner internal energy and corner specific heat for angles π/3, π/2, and 2π/3 are obtained, as well as higher-order corrections. Comparing with the corner internal energy and corner specific heat we previously found on a rectangle of the square lattice [Phys. Rev. E 86, 041149 (2012)], we conclude that the corner internal energy and corner specific heat for the rectangular shape are not universal.
