A quantum generalization of the thermal viscous friction law

Abstract

On the basis of the equivalence of the energy balance deacription at micro- and macro-level we propose a quantum generalization of the viscous friction law for a macroscopic Langevin equation describing thermal fluctuations without the zero point contribution. This equation recovers the classical case in the limit h -> 0. In particular it satisfies the quantum regression theorem and resolves several anomalies appearing in the quantum extension of the fluctuation dissipation theorem.

Energy balance for a dissipative system

X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, Robert F. O’Connell

In general, dissipative problems involve both frictional and fluctuation forces. As it turns out, solutions of many of these problems are encompassed by the generalized quantum Langevin equation. Here, we use this equation to obtain a general expression for the work done by the fluctuation force on a quantum particle. At equilibrium, this work is necessary to balance the energy lost by the particle due to the frictional force.

Explicit noise and dissipation operators for quantum stochastic thermodynamics

Stefano Giordano, Fabrizio Cleri, Ralf Blossey

Abstract The theory of open quantum systems plays a fundamental role in several scientific and technological disciplines, from quantum computing and information science to molecular electronics and quantum thermodynamics. Despite its widespread relevance, a rigorous formulation of quantum dissipation in conjunction with thermal noise remains a topic of active research. In this work, we establish a formal correspondence between classical stochastic thermodynamics, in particular the Fokker–Planck and Klein–Kramers equations, and the quantum master equation. Building on prior studies of multiplicative noise in classical stochastic differential equations, we demonstrate that thermal noise at the quantum level manifests as a multidimensional geometric stochastic process. By applying canonical quantization, we introduce a novel Hermitian dissipation operator that serves as a quantum analogue of classical viscous friction. This operator allows for a well-defined expression of heat exchange between a system and its environment, enabling the formulation of an alternative quantum equipartition theorem. Our framework ensures a precise energy balance that aligns with the first law of thermodynamics and an entropy balance consistent with the second law. The theoretical formalism is applied to two prototypical quantum systems, the harmonic oscillator and a particle in an infinite potential well, for which it provides new insights into nonequilibrium thermodynamics at the quantum scale. Our results advance the understanding of dissipation in quantum systems and establish a foundation for future studies on stochastic thermodynamics in the quantum domain.

Can Quantum Regression Theorem Be Reconciled with Quantum Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem ?

P. Shiktorov

In the attempt to derive the regression theorem from the fluctuation dissipation theorem several authors claim the violation of the former theorem in the quantum case. Here we pose the question: does it exisist a quantum fluctuation dissipation theorem (QFDT) in its conventional interpretation ? It is shown that the relation usually called as the QFDT is the condition of detailed macroscopic energetic balance. Following this interpretation the existing conflict between the two theorems in the quantum case is removed.

There is No Quantum Regression Theorem

G. W. Ford, Robert F. O’Connell

The Onsager regression hypothesis states that the regression of fluctuations is governed by macroscopic equations describing the approach to equilibrium. It is here asserted that this hypothesis fails in the quantum case. This is shown first by explicit calculation for the example of quantum Brownian motion of an oscillator and then in general from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. It is asserted that the correct generalization of the Onsager hypothesis is the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.

Quantum non-Markovian Langevin equations and transport coefficients

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations featuring explicitly time-dependent transport coefficients are derived from generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. Generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and analytic expressions for calculating the friction and diffusion coefficients in nuclear processes are obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the transport coefficients and correlation functions for a damped harmonic oscillator that is linearly coupled in momentum to a heat bath is studied. The coupling to a heat bath in momentum is responsible for the appearance of the diffusion coefficient in coordinate. The problem of regression of correlations in quantum dissipative systems is analyzed.
